I've watched your channel for awhile now, I'm a specialty painting contractor 48 yrs. The attention to detail you use is spectacular. I apply very similar prep techniques same as your doing. I'm Italian like you and the art of it all produces something the average eye does pick up. Hope you don't wear yourself out, you do put a lot of sweat into your prep as I did for so many years. I found it hard to find quality workers to have a good eye for detail. Its great in your trade to work on a smaller area as a car, compared to large areas I had to deal with, applying high tech coatings to countertops, garage floors, furniture, decorative waterproofing deck coatings, faux finish walls , venetian plasters and a million more. What your doing to make those compound curved door panels come out straight is quite an artistic talent. I have painted cars and find it very rewarding. I've sprayed so much in my life but after all the crazy different coatings I've used, autobody paint is so user friendly and a joy to spray. I'm use to waterborne coatings and the difficulty of spraying them in much harsher environments than a controlled spray booth. I almost never get runs, my hand is so robotic now. I appreciate your discipline narration as you prep or spray, especially the blending techniques. I do clearcoats over multi spec granite like countertop coatings, autobody techniques help me re coating small areas of repair. One thing I need to understand is to keep some orange peel for small touch up repair areas. I've seen a 3m backing pad that wont let the sanding or buffing flatten out the clear too much as it glides over the peaks of the orange peel I use semi gloss catalyzed acrylic urethanes and don't want polishing them out to a gloss. I'm learning to use the edge blending better also. You have said ,you learned a lot of tricks later on over the mistakes early in your career, making you such a better painter. I'm 65 yrs old but for how much I like your training , I might wear a shirt you sell for once in my life. I have been impressed with so few painters in my life, but you share so much of your time , what a great thing your doing here. A great blessed future to you Brian

Wet paper definitely keeps the dust down and the work area cleaner, but it's slower, and some people decide to trade dust for saving time. That's really the main difference. Both ways work!

One technique I used for fast repair is I would buy some plastic molding strips cut from 18" to 36" and strike off my Bondi 2 times like a guy doing stucco work. Less sanding straighter finish. About 45 minutes for dent that size. 3 ft was good for Old school quarter panels. One wipe to fill. Second glaze for transition covering all feather edge full pass left to right. I've filled van cargo doors end to end in just over one hour.ready for priming.

26:39 I feel like I miss a very important step. I can hear you saying something but the music is very overpowering. 28:12 using the tack cloth do you ever worry about leaving some of the stuff that makes the tack cloth tacky on the panel? I notice in some stops when I use a tack cloth I can see some shine in some spots from the cloth and I then find my self light sanding them areas to make sure my paint sticks. I always wondered if I should be doing that or not...
@novinnovations40262 жыл бұрын
This is dependant on what brand tackrag you are using. Some are better at not transferring the tack material to the panel than others. You taking the extra time to sand the shine spots to ensure proper adhesion shows you care about your work! But it may or may not be an extra step you are doing that isn't necessary, and this could save you more time if you didn't have to do it. You could test on a test panel if the paint adheres properly without the resanding step and go from there! Hope that helps, even though I'm a year late

I know we prime walls or cars so that the base coat color as well as paint chemical can adhere better but is there any other reasons why we prime? That base sealer u used that was the cars color or close to it... That was to me essentially a primer coat. God I hate priming it feels like such a waste. Is there something Im missing why primer is needed. Like I guess for body filled dents those 3 to 4 coats of primer really safeguard and provided layers from any of the paint color going into body filler. Anyways just writing out loud I guess

Question 1, Is the color build sealer an akzo product? I've been using lesonal for about two years now and we only have white and black primer/surfacer to shade the sealer ratio. Color build seems like a much more efficient option. Question 2 did you learn using the blending additive before the application of sealer in the sikkens product training class? Lesonal has the same products but in the training course the instructor only mentioned to use the blending solvent at the edge of the sealer overspray prior to the application of blending additive. The way you demonstrate seems alot more efficient, and so long as proper flash times are respected there shouldn't be the problem of overloading solvents?
@PaintSociety4 жыл бұрын
Color build system is available with sikkens mm2.0. So much more efficient. All my methods are self taught. I like to use the blending additive first because that sealer will leave a real dry edge. To help melt that further I’ll use the high temp reducer to melt away the edge. Just give proper flash times and you won’t have any issues.

QUESTION:: If I sand the panel down but not to bare-metal... just to the PAINT LAYER ITSELF, should I use PRIMER at all? Or should I sand it down to BARE METAL even if it doesn't seem necessary? The top of my BLACK car showed some deterioration of the clear coat and a few RUST spots... I sanded it down with 600 GRIT wet/dry and it is now smooth and nice but still shows a layer of the old paint ... should I just paint over it or use PRIMER? I have SELF ETCHING PRIMER.... How much time was spent repairing versus replacement, or just skinning? Gotta play that numbers game. We're always looking for away to get more cars thru the booth. Keep in mind, never lose the repair skills by replacing everything. One day you may have to repair a panel, because it's an old classic you want to restore, and that's all you have.
@PaintSociety4 жыл бұрын
John, I always prefer to replace, it’s just easier and honestly I feel like it makes for a better repair because nothing is ever going to be perfect once you have a decent amount of Bondo on the Finish. I do agree it’s good to have the skills but replacing is just 10 times quicker and more efficient. Unfortunately the insurance company would not replace the door.

Great question. You have three options. 3/32 throw. Ultra fine. Leaves very small sand scratches. Ideal for paint prep/color sanding 3/16 general all around good sander which can cut filler and prep for paint just fine, which is what I used here 3/8 bigger through, leaves deeper scratches. Ideal for leveling off a lot of filler. Hope this helps

What was it you did exactly as I couldn’t wrap my head around it. Sorry if it’s a daft question ! Also is it possible to blend well without a clear base coat being applied ? Thanks !
@novinnovations40262 жыл бұрын
There's a couple ways/techniques to blend a panel, so I couldn't speculate on exactly what his technique was to blend this specific job. But to answer your second question, yes you can achieve a good blend without the need for clear base or spot blender products. Just takes more finesse, that comes with experience. Keep painting out there!
