@1:04. If Seattle uses the OPTICOM infrared signal controller system like most major cities, the fire truck was NOT at fault. When the sensor--which is mounted near the signal light--receives an IR signal from the fire truck, ALL lights in the intersection go red.

I know Seattle has the ability to turn the lights on 4th Avenue green (the fire engine was traveling on 4th) but I'm not sure they use the system to turn it red in all directions. I drive for a living in Seattle and have done so for 22 years. My worst complaint is people don't know how to allow other cars to merge into traffic. They think ONLY of themselves and don't realize we all have to merge at one time or another and it makes the driving universe better for everyone when we use the zipper technique of letting every other car merge in like a zipper does with the staggered rungs when zipping up . My second biggest complaint is cars thinking that crowding my bumper will make me go faster. It is so dangerous in the event I have to slam on my brakes.
@SeattleTrafficCamsАй бұрын
Yup - those are both pet peeves of mine as well. I always give a wave when people let me in, to encourage good behavior, but yeah, tailgaters are the worst. Thanks for watching!

@maximusmiles8435Ай бұрын
It doesn't help much when people get on the freeway going 40mph. When they reach the merge point, they are surprised you are there. You don't see that in other parts of the country. Places like Wyoming, Utah, or even L.A. where speeds are much higher. People enter the freeway at speed, and merge. As someone who drives for a living. I've driven extensively throughout the U.S. Seattle area seems to be one of the worst. Drivers either drive slow where they aren't supposed to, or drive like maniacs. Along with bad habits like I mentioned earlier. All the while distracted by their phones.

@joshyaksАй бұрын
As I replied to a similar comment, speaking as a paramedic in Ontario Canada, that's probably not correct. According to the Ambulance Act that determines the laws where I work, even if we're on an emergency run with lights and sirens, not only are we required to come to a complete stop at every stop sign and red light, but if we're traveling through a red light we must, by law, stop at every single lane of traffic that we're passing through. Of course in practice we never do that unless it's necessary due to oncoming traffic, but if we get in an accident while passing through a red light, it is 100% our fault. I wouldn't be surprised if American laws are similar.
@donh6416Ай бұрын
Wrong. Under Washington law emergency lights and siren allow emergency vehicles to proceed through red traffic lights only after determining it is safe to do so without causing a collision with traffic that has green controls.
@Aviator27JАй бұрын
Having driven fire apparatus (trucks, engines, tankers, rescues, etc) and been a passenger even more times, it is expected to use caution, especially when approaching intersections and running counter flow (opposite traffic). A big however is that people hardly yield even when they notice lights and/or sirens, so it's a dangerous job even when the engineer/operator (or chauffeur as drivers are sometimes called) exercise every bit of diligence and risk assessment. Watch out, people! You won't win in a fight against a heavy truck carrying lots of equipment and water!

The cars not coming off the west seattle bridge, those lanes are "left turn prohibited" and will change to green before the other two lanes that are "right turn prohibited". Dashcams are a must for every driver, especially in Seattle. In less than a month of having it, I already caught a dangerous spinout on I-405 in the dark rainy weather after the bomb cyclone. SLOW DOWN people and watch where you are going!

"The fire engine had the red light." In every state/county I have ever lived in, when fire trucks have their sirens on all traffic lights in a 1-2 block radius go red, to stop all traffic flow for the fire trucks. As in a built into the traffic light system fire truck with sirens on would always have red lights, by design.
@SeattleTrafficCamsАй бұрын
Yeah, we don't seem to have that system in Seattle - they do have the ability to turn the lights green on a few of the roads downtown, so I'm not sure why that didn't happen in this case.

These compilations are the reason why I don’t ever choose to drive when Seattle is involved in my day. I will say that I didn’t help the case for Bellevue drivers when I myself became an idiot and failed to lane change for a right turn and crashed into a couple of people. Luckily, they weren’t mad at me and the insurance stuff went so smooth that the cop that responded to the scene didn’t even cite me and left right as he arrived. My car was going to be totaled but I chose to repair it with money in my own pocket and have became a whole lot more aware of my surroundings when on the road!

The problem is the overall environment of lawlessness has gotten much worse in recent years. No one feels there will be any consequences for driving like they’re in a video game, and until they get in a spectacular car wreck, there almost never are.

It's the fault of our built environment, which we have created, ineptly, with eyes open. You cannot participate in USA culture without being able to operate a motor vehicle. Telling people they cannot drive isn't quite a death sentence, but it's not far off. That it becomes a literal death sentence to innocent others is collateral damage of policy. Every day is a roll of the dice.

Hello, last night I was in an accident where someone rear ended me and then ran from the scene. I’ve read that the city doesn’t keep footage but maybe you might have it? It happened 12/12 around 9pm at Yale and Stewart Street. Seattle GeoData says there is a traffic camera here. If you’re able to help me I would appreciate it so much. Thank you

I moved here 6 months ago from LA. I knew something was wrong when I got near Seattle and noticed drovers didn't merge with the flow of traffic. At first I thought I was imagining things but have now concluded they are inefficient and situationally unaware of other drivers and things going on around them. They also seem to have a lot of "Please be patient. I'm a student driver." stickers on vehicles here. I'm not sure if that's to cover up the two problems I just mentioned. 😅

As an eastern Washington resident that has had to live there i can say that Seattle area drivers are the rudest most unskilled drivers in existence. Texting and riding your tail,speeding racing ,and my favorite, lane sweeping.
@RhaspunАй бұрын
I used to driver up and down I-5 in a truck. Moving bringing windows from Canada down to California. For some reason I noticed that when I got into Oregon and got closer to Portland drivers liked to slow down and then stay at the tail of the trailer. It continued like that through Seattle. I could speed up or slow down and they stay in position at the rear of the trailer. They would be in the next lane over holding that position. Before their car reached me I could see them coming up. It always happened in Oregon and Washington.
@ihcnehcАй бұрын
@@Rhaspun Can confirm. East Seattle area for 20 years. Very annoying. Having been to ID, UT, and other states, only happens in OR and WA. It seems they are trying to block other cars from passing and hold up the traffic.

Is there a reason that most of these cameras are central or south side? Are there no wrecks north of the Montlake cut?
@SeattleTrafficCamsАй бұрын
There's just a higher camera density down there, and I think more drivers are funneled onto roads that have more cameras. Like, north of the cut, Lake City Way only has a few cameras, and 15th Ave only has a few as well, so it seems like crashes on the south side are more likely to be on traffic cam.

Thank you, again, Friend of All Criminals, King County Prosecutor Leesa Manion and her relentless efforts not to charge people with gun crime, or to fold a guilty plea with another conviction and then agree to concurrent sentencing.
