John should be very thankful that Craig is around to cold start the bikes. Otherwise, He'd be screwed.

If it's a HSR MIKUNI, I'll buy everyone you have. The pilot air screw is right next to the fuel fitting. 2 full turns out is the starting point. Now, here's the MOST often overlooked part of these carbs. The idle mixture and even the idle speed adjustment, needs a o-ring and generally a flat washer and a spring to prevent air leaks and to keep the adjustment from changing. More often than not, these are missing, and the best Harley carb in the world gets blamed for no reason. They work and they work incredibly well, they just have more parts than the S&S. If I get up north this winter, I'll buy everyone you have !

I think you nailed it! Can't adjust shit without a proper functioning carb. Or ignition system for that matter. But clearly she's gettin' spark where it's needed. I dig the chop! Paying omage to my first Sporty; a rebuilt '81 AMF with the identical paint as your tank! It was a ripper with Super E/filtered velocity stack and 1 pc. performance dual pipes.

Almost forgot, you mentioned the choke, actually the enrichner, could very well be the reason for running poorly, especially if it's rich. Harley choke cable has the word choke on the plastic knob,, the Mikuni doesn't. The Harley cable will work, but MUST have a spring and plunger made for the Mikuni. The Harley plunfer won't seal internally and results in a severe rich condition. The spring and plunger come in the install kit, better yet is the Mikuni cable, I'm pretty sure Ted has them. I use propane to check for air leaks, you can just use WD40 if that's what you have. Or find some old ROUND SLIDE Mikuni carbs, simple as a dirt bike carb, and the 38 m.m. work excellent on a old Shovel, Pan, etc.

Guys, my phone screen is all cracked, but it looks like that's a HSR Mikuni, there's 2 screws for accelerator pump adjustment. Screw #1 pushes the pump rod to adjust the start of the pump stroke. .080" is the starting point between the lever and pump rod end. If there's hesitation off idle, reduce the gap by .010". Screw #2 is vertical up on top of the carb cap, next to the cap cover screw, it's tiny but important. You adjust this to STOP the pump action after 3/4 throttle opening. T.S. RACING 🏁
