I went back to Craster in the beautiful English county of Northumberland. And this time, I listened to my loyal subscribers who INSISTED I try Craster Kippers! This video is a taste test of my friend Christa, who is visiting from North Carolina, and me... two Americans trying Craster Kippers for the first time! It was our first time eating any kippers, or herring, for the first time, actually!
What do you think of kippers? What is your favourite way to eat them?
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE for more British fun and travel adventures. Cheers! XX Dara

I use kippers when making kedgeree instead of smoked haddock. My dad used to make it that way when we were kids, and he got a taste for it in his national service army days in the 1950s. Its a vast improvement over haddock in kedgeree. Also, i would recommend to try mild smoked kipoer fillets, fried in a crispy batter, similar to how you would get cod or haddock at the chippy. It tastes amazing, especially with some sea salt and lemon juice on. Kippers are also good used in a fish pie, or in homemade fishcakes.

Grilled kippers, with just a bit of the finest butter, are my constant delight; they're rich in omega-3 oils, which are not only healthy but also beneficial for your hair and skin. I even share them with my two cats, and their coats are always glossy.

Dara. You keep bringing memories back! My dad used to sell fish, kippers, smoked haddock, cod, hake, plaice & fish cakes along wit fruit & vegetables. The kippers were popular with our elder customers. One thing with them was they were easy to sell, no boning/filleting like the white fish. I never got to fillet the white fish, dad always did that. Too expensive and very sharp knives for children to be use. I still remember the smell of the kippers.

We ALWAYS have kippers for breakfast (mummy dear, mummy dear) on Good Friday….with lots of butter and fresh crusty bread - it is the way to celebrate Fish On Good Friday!! Now, what you ought to do, is to pop along to the local Sainsy in Cheltenham, head for the fresh fish aisle and put two packets of “boil in the bag” buttered kipper fillets in your trolley dolly 😃…. Then zip up to the bakery aisle and get a large fresh Farmhouse loaf…. As the kippers are pre cooked - about 8 mins in a pan of boiling water will heat them up and be ready to eat - serve on a plate with some black pepper and rock salt sprinkled over the top, along with copiously buttered crusty bread. …. Teee daaah! Bob’s your uncle and Fanny is definitely your Auntie! 😂😂 Hubster, on days when we have them and it’s not Good Friday, likes a rasher or two of bacon with his kippers… try that too! 😂😂

Hiya. Just the kippers alone for breakfast, anything else can be eaten after. A pair of kippers per person served with a good knob of butter on each kipper. If eating later, then kippers with some good mash perchance. I think you may have overcooked the fillets, though. They should've been gently poached, not boiled and only for 4-8 minutes in total. In fact, you could stand them up in a jug, boil the kettle, fill the jug with the water and a knob of butter and leave them to stand for the required amount of time. If you still don't like kippers, try Kedgeree, also eaten for breakfast. And Cullen Skink for a dinner dish. Stay safe. All the best to you.

I love a kipper (or two) for brekkie. I grill them in a dish, catches the natural juices/oils, and have them with brown bread and butter. But I wouldn't give up on them if I were you, think of all that omega 3 :) But finding the right kipper for you can be tricky. It varies lots from different brands/companies, depending on the level of smoke. Some can be subtle, while others can be overpowering, and leave an acrid aftertaste... So maybe try at least one other before you give up on them. That said, personally, I wouldn't bother with the easy, boil/micro in the bag ones. They're certainly convenient, but the ones I've tried have all been incredibly salty. Unless you're a big salt fan mind, then maybe give them a go 🙂

We attended church in Alnwick the day before and the local chap told us to eat them for breakfast with toast and egg. And so did the lady at L Robson! And the host at our Air B&B! And... on the back of the package it said to poach the kipper in MILK! That sounded too crazy, so I went for the water method. Butter sounds tastier.

@MagentaOtterTravels what can I say? There are people everywhere with weird tastes, if you feel something doesn't go together then you're, most probably, correct ! I can't stand black pudding (and that's from being a child) offal is to be fed to dogs, not humans &, as for jellied eels, my goodness my eyes water at the thought of them , yuk ! I like lobster, prawns, the big crabs caught offshore in these cold waters , our Northumbrian beef &, once upon a time our lamb too (till I helped my friend feed her rescue lambs from being 2 hours old 😢) now I can't eat that . If you're still in Northumberland head to just outside Alnwick town, Willowburn Retail Park , Turnbulls the butchers , all the goodies are top quality, the meat all has the name of the farm & miles travelled. The steak pies are gorgeous 😍, there's Rington's tea , very classy , try their Earl Grey, which, incidentally was created, as you know, for Charles, Lord Eldon, Earl Grey , his ancestral home, less than a mile from Craster & their tea room open all summer , in which you may well find yourself being served by the current Earl Grey & his lovely wife...why not, you know it would be fascinating 😉 Oh, by the way, their place is Howick Hall, NE66 3LB

Kipper facts. West coast kippers (often called Manx kippers) are better than the east coast. Grill (broil) them with butter don't poach. With Manx kippers the fish bones often disintegrate in the smoking and then cooking for me kippers have to sizzle. Fleetwood used to be a great place for Manx kippers.
