The reason they don't play in sloppy conditions in baseball mostly has to do with the pitcher. The Pitcher's force and accuracy (ability to not hit the batter in the head, or not throw 10 wild pitches in a row) mostly relies on his footing and grip. The amount of downward and forward force, down a sloped mound, is extreme on the planting foot. A muddy pitching mound is an injury waiting to happen. More than that, it becomes extremely difficult for the pitcher to grip the baseball...adding to the danger for the batter. Football players don't have to deal with a small slippery hardball going 90 mph+. Yes, football players have to deal with footing...but football players usually have tightly taped feet and ankles, and specialized wet-condition cleats. Many teams will change they're offenses to mostly running plays, to secure the ball during play. In baseball you can't really do much to change play to accommodate for wet and muddy conditions.
@wizzledorff2 жыл бұрын
Also, if the bases are wet, it's easy for the runner's foot to slide off, which, at full stride can lead to hyperextension (I've seen it and it's ugly).

During rain, they only cover the infield on baseball fields so the diamond doesn't turn into mud. The outfield will get as wet as it gets. They don't play in rain unless it's maybe a 15 -minute drizzle maximum because the pitcher needs to have a good grip on the ball. It's not a good idea to have him throwing at a batter at 95 miles an hour if he can't control his release.

Office blokes 4:32 I was at this game in the hurricane! We had cheap seats, but because the stadium was so empty. One minute before the game kickoff, the announcer said. Looks like everybody's here that's going to come. Move to a nicer seat if you would like to. So I was sat right in the middle of the stadium at the 50 yard line.. seats I would have never paid money for because I couldn't afford them

Another reason besides what's been mentioned, baseballs get waterlogged and ruined very quickly. One lands in a puddle in the outfield the out fielder now has to throw a much heavier ball in. I loved playing soccer in the rain and mud.

I miss the days of my youth, when we could get up a neighborhood football game, after a 10" snow storm.
@AngelA-qi1br2 жыл бұрын
You can play an entire football game without the ball ever touching the ground. In baseball the infield is dirt, which becomes mud during a rain storm. Unlike in cricket, baseballs are constantly thrown by infielders to get outs. A wet baseball is not only a problem for the pitcher to hold and control when throwing, it's a problem for every fielder, including the catcher
@BC_E912 жыл бұрын
A football touches the ground every play. Whether it’s the carrier getting tackled or when the center has the ball pre snap. Football just has the option to run every play if they have bad weather

Around 7:30 when he said “that’s weather in Buffalo for you” , as a Buffalonian myself I loved that 😄 also, CAN CONFIRM! but the one thing about is buffalonians, we love winter! We know how to walk and drive on ice, and if there’s a bills game but there’s feet of snow, you better bet yourself that we’re walking to that stadium. We may not have made the playoff in a long time, but we will stand in a blizzard just to get Tim Hortons coffee, and throw ourselves off a roof and body slam a table at a football tail gate party. One funny one, in the NFL, was the LA Rams vs Minnesota Vikings playoff game from '77. The Rams, being from a warm weather state, would always lose in the playoffs to the Vikings because it was always in Minnesota in the winter, which was a frozen tundra. But that year the Rams had the home field advantage and the expectation was they'd win. Then that week LA had pouring rain. It turned the field into a mud bowl. It's not the same as snow and ice but I'm sure that had to kill the Rams' morale. The Rana lost.

I'd say a big ommision from this video was the USA v Costa Rica World Cup qualifier in Colorado. Costa Rica were furious that the US decided to host the game in Colorado and as you can imagine, it was a blizzard. You couldn't see the lines, I think the game was played with a white ball if I remember correctly. I think Costa Rica then wanted to return the favor by playing on a flooded field down there. lol One of the best US Men's National Team games in my opinion, at least one of the most memorable.

In baseball they cover the field in hopes that it won't become absolutely saturated so if it stops raining it will dry faster. The outfield in a baseball field is regular grass which I would assume would be much more slippery, increasing the chance of serious injuries, versus football field turf.

Hi guys. One of the main reasons they don't play baseball in the extreme weather is the field. If the field gets chewed up in football, the groundscrew has a week to repair it. In baseball they have to play again tomorrow. Hey Daz. I haven't heard you mention it, did you see that the NFL game in London in (I think) week 4 of the NFL season is the Green Bay Packers and the N.Y. Giants? I see a field trip for you guys!

Baseball in the rain. They stop and cover the infield because of the dirt tracks and pitcher's mound. These turn to mud which becomes hazardous to players, especially the runners & the pitcher who rely on cleats for traction which would be lost in the mud.
@nathanbeard5132 жыл бұрын
In addition to the pitcher issues in baseball the infield is usually covered in aggregate red clay. So, if it got soaking wet and then dried it would end up like a clay tennis court.
@bigd74812 жыл бұрын

Baseball with rain a pitcher can have the ball slip out and you throwing a 90 mph fastball it can hit the player and be a lot of trouble. But there a lot of other reasons like a batter losing grip of the bat or a ball could plug itself after a hit into the ground

I'm surprised they didn't include the 1981 AFC Championship, a.k.a. the Freezer Bowl. The week before San Diego played in Miami where it was high 88s and high humidity. During the Freezer Bowl, they were in Cincinnati where it was -9F with 29 MPH winds which gave the stadium a windchill of -59F. It was so cold and windy that the QBs pretty much couldn't pass as the ball would just dead duck after 5 yards. Multiple players ended up with frostbite.

With baseball rain any ball hit in the air also looks like 1000 hard baseballs coming right at you in the floodlights and it's dangerous. I took one to the face at practice in the rain. Also it's dangerous to throw a ball at 95 mph when a little bit of moisture could make the ball slip in the pitchers hand, be inaccurate, and fracture a batters eye socket. Plus it's baseball. Historically they stop for heavy rain. NFL historically doesn't stop for anything but lightening. Proper football or soccer kinda follows NFL rules in the states in that it almost doesn't stop for anything. I think that is largely because you just grow up in the states with a sport on a big field like American football that doesn't stop for weather, Hockey where you play on frozen lakes. So It's more the sports like baseball and golf that stop for extreme weather here. Like when the USMNT played that world cup qualifier against Costa Rica most Americans didn't truly get what the big deal was cause they were used to seeing NFL players play in snow.
@Freshenstein232 жыл бұрын
In baseball people will just get hurt. Pitchers for the most part don’t want to hurt people. They can’t throw 90+ mph in the rain. Football they’ll play in anything. Look at the Patriots in Buffalo from last season. Insane

That soccer goal wouldn't have counted. Not sure why the refs weren't immediately calling that off. If the ball goes into the goal untouched off a goal kick, it's just a corner as if it had gone out of the end line at any other place. Says a lot about the fact that the players didn't know it.
