In case you didn't know Sam "John Loudon McAdam" was the man who revolutionised road building in the 1800's by developing macadamisation, the process that is the basis of Taracadam or "Tarmac", for short, which is still used for building roads today. He was born in Ayr in 1756 and died in Moffat in 1836. His three sons and four grandsons followed in his foot steps, his second son James Nicoll was Known as the "Colossus of Roads". James Nicoll McAdam was knighted for his work, apparently a Knighthood was previously offered to John but he turned it down. A great video Sam, nice looking loco shame about the mechanism.

Hi Sam, I remember back in 1990 coming across a class 60 in Eastleigh station sidings, me and another driver were on meal break and went and looked it over. Never had we seen such a thing. Lasers feeding back for wheel slip and a host of other features. Very impressive. This model seems to convey all that rather well. The flat sides is fair, they were like that. Not keen on those bogies, look far to flimsy for the weight. Interesting stuff mate. Mike

As a train to run I cannot fault the Class 60. I have 14 on my layout and have had more!. They never let you down and I even did a video of one pulling 50 Mk 3 coaches. My only issue is the price now. I have not bought a new one for over 2 years. They should be £160 no more when you consider Dapols and Accurascales offerings.

I remember when Hornby first brought the superdetailed class 60 out. I used to pick them up for about £55. At most id pay £65. Compared to today's prices that's insanely cheap considering how detailed they were. Way ahead of their time.

@@SamsTrains prices are ridiculous now. I remember paying £35 for Hornby superdetailed 08s, £45 for class 31s. Bachmann class 66s were £55 or so. Think £58 to be exact lol. Even the rrp was only about £72. Its shocking these days to see even small wagons going for £40 or so. The funniest thing is when I had the money to partake in railway modelling I didn't have the space. Now I'm all grown up and do have the space, fully converted loft, spare room, garage and shed. All suitable homes for a model railway. I can't afford the hobby. 🤣

Just to say that flywheels don't sap power, they add inertia. In other words more gentle deceleration AND acceleration. Although I understand what you mean that it seems some models you have tested with large flywheels have had power issues.

I have two of these, one is DCC fitted with sound and the other is DCC ready. I love them better then the two Hornby class 66’s I own.

If you're used to Hornby standards the level of detail on this loco is incredible, but since I'm used to brands like Roco, Piko, Trix and a few less known more expensive brands to me this is just another nice loco. Nothing too special about it. 😉

I've got a Colas one, 087. Colas bought 10 from DB Cargo (002, 021, 026, 047, 056, 076, 085, 087, 095, 096) in 2014, then sold those 10 to GBRf in 2018. Mine is absolutely fantastic, except it did have a motor issue at one point (it squealed and lost most of its power. I fixed it by completely opening it up and bending something away from the armature). It's my 3rd most powerful loco without traction tyres, I think (my older hornby 50 has tyres and is more powerful than it, but the accurascale deltics take the top 2 spots). I do have issues with locos with kinematic couplings. My hornby 50s, 56s, 60s, and accurascale deltics all pull couplings to one side under load, which derails lighter wagons and almost any coaches if loaded up enough.

I love these locos, although I'm in Australia :) They look great, and I love the 8-cylinder diesel in them. It adds a touch of variety, especially these days when 16-cylinder GMs predominate.

2 things: 1 - Funfact - some of the class 60s had the class 31's instructions printed on the inside of the booklet and 2- That's not a speaker - it's bits of detail for the egnine room I think!

Appropriate this goes up today as I think a class 60 is one of the 3 main guests on the Diesel Gala here on the East Lancs Railway today. Wasgonna guess the earliest is the Green Class 15/20 in the background its hard to tell from the distance as they look so similar

Super model. I think the 2005 models were better than now. There were some amazing details and the prices were a lot more sensible. I was modelling in 00 then, and for the price Hornby are charging now for one model, I brought 2. I think the class 60 was a superb model and still stands as a really great one. Yes they were a bit flat in paint detail, but the overall detail is so good. Great review Sam, let’s hope that there are still some great models from 2005 - 2009 around at great prices for you to review.

To answer one of your questions, Yes Hornby have "upgraded" the inside (tinkered with) on my 'original' models the lights have nasty spring contacts, and they are a pig to get right so that ALL the lights work, when you come to putting the body back on, and the ONLY reasion I took (take) the bodies off any models is to fit a DCC Decoder!

Decent review there Sam the hornby 60 is a good model from what I have seen, I was able to get one a couple of years ago at a train show for only £70, it isn’t in the best condition though but does work very well, it’s in mainline blue livery.

I have one of these in the GBRF corporate colourscheme, it''s probably my second or third most heaviest loco I currently own. Astonishingly good loco for it's age, but i'm quite surprised about the mechanism there, didn't expect it to NOT have bearings.

Great review Sam, I have quite a few Class 60’s all purchased within the last 12 - 18 months & really like them. Surprised about the mechanism which is disappointing there aren’t axle bearings & not a fan of the kinematic coupling at all. Also in my experience, the plough detail part that surrounds the Nem coupling falls off easily and I’ve had to glue them in place. Cheers, Apples

Re the lights, does it not have the switch under the fuel tank? My ones do, and it is so you can switch from Day mode lighting to Night mode lighting! I did see a real one a couply of weeks ago, in a strange dark grey livery! I think they are cool locos, they ought to be kept in full service, I am sure they are stronger than the class 66s'

8:28 The true story of the Class 60's (I actually did some of the testing on them at Mickleover and Old Dalby). The Class 60 actually came about due to Foster Yeoman ordering their own Class 59 locomotives to haul their trains due to the BR Class 37's and 56's not being up to the job. Foster Yeoman trains required 3x Class 37's or 2x Class 56's yet only 1x Class 59 would be needed for each trainload. BR asked the government to fund 100 Class 59's for their own fleet, the government agreed to the request BUT with the proviso that the locomotives were built in the UK and not tendered out to General Motors. Therefore, BR had to come up with their own interpretation of the Class 59. The main teething troubles with the Class 60's involved the Doppler Radar controlled speedometer sensors which primarily controlled the slow speed. Any water in the four foot would reflect a bogus signal, as too would going over coal discharge chutes at power stations. There was also a problem with the computer power control on the main line, whereby when travelling downhill, the computer would not let the driver demand full power and would only give full power halfway up the next incline after the train weight had dragged the speed down. So, it wasn't possible to get up to full speed. These problems were eventually ironed out but additionally the deep windscreens caused sleeper flutter to the driver and my suggestion of black strips at the bottom of the windscreens fell on deaf ears. I always drove them with my bag laid along the bottom of the windscreen at the bottom of my line of sight..

Hi Sam, I've had plans for get a Bachmann HO Scale Thomas with Annie and Clarabel train set as a starter set to get myself more interested in buying more models, may make a custom Spiteful Brakevan prior to one of the Scottish Twins crushing him to pieces, I don't plan on making any videos on the models since I'm just more into the Japanese merchandise, speaking of Japanese merchandise, I have a cheap tiny figurine coming in the mail next week.

Interesting review. Have you reviewed the Hornby class 50 yet? - it is similar to the class 60 in many ways - very well detailed, operating lights, opening cab doors - Co-Co wheel arrangement - similar mechanism and heavy weight (around 650 g) and the model dates from about the same time. It runs really well and also has an operating fan. Having spent only £60 for a used one I found in a flea market, I'm pleased with it. However, it's not worth the £223.99 Hornby want for the current version!

Hi Sam Following the 92s these are also some of my favourite locos (as you mentioned share a body shell in reality). Commenting before I finish the video so sorry if you mention this, but just got to 2:14 and: 1) This locos is in fact in a “Hybrid” Loadhaul livery. The base is standard BR “Triple Grey” as all the 60s were delivered in, but the “Sector” decals have been replaced by Loadhaul decals. This happened to a few 60s when they didn’t want to fully repaint the load into the full Loadhaul black and orange scheme (60059 was thus painted, I have that one in N gauge). 2) All class 60s were named upon delivery. Will get back to you no doubt great review now…. 4:24; The box is less accurate, no “blue” was used on the original BR roof livery on these, should be a dark grey more like the model.

Some locos did actually receive a dark blue roof with the BR sector grey “Distribution” livery (the version was sometimes known as “European” distribution as the locos were involved with Chunnel work), but the 60s were not in that group.

A very good looker, runs quite nicely, but eyewateringly expensive. Needs brass hemispherical bearings quite badly - it can' be that hard to add? That would make it run nicely I suspect. Oh, and a load of oil wash, weathering powders and general grot...

It looks like all that grease Hornby put into the mech has made it work relatively well, even though it is running on plastic bearing surface. The fact ti does work as it should and the detailing is so great, I think for the discounted price these are really worth while. It is just a pity Horny still ask ridiculous MSRP's for these At least the retailers seem to have room to put a more reasonable price on them.

Having had, at one time, 14 of these beasts on the roster, I could never fault them, had allocation preference over bachmann 66's and Hornby 56's on the 'trainset'. on which we had train consists of 15 - 18 heavy loaded bogie stone hoppers, leaving from a standing start, uphill on a curve, so you HAD to drive them. and they took that thrashing well over the years. i serviced the mech. from above, clip-off body no issues, i was trained to lift locomotives by the fuel tanks. only minor gripe, no thrust bearings on the worm gear towers, so needed additional lubrication there, that worked down into the gear towers keeping it all fine and smooth. Still got two, both Colas, both DCC sound. best diesel??? probably, though Hatton's 'shed' gives it a close run.

Also the 4-4-0 119 mechanism Actually picks up power from the front pony wheels and drive wheels from 1 rail and all the tender wheels pick up from the other rail. That's the way my engines are designed one Of your tender bogies might have not been on correctly Or might have been facing backwards

There are two types of controller used commonly with model railways, and both connect to the track. DCC (Digital Command control) controllers allow you to independently run effectively as many locos you like at the same time, independently. Analogue controllers typically run one channel at a time, only allowing you to set one speed and direction. Analogue locos on DCC will simply buzz and not move, unless the DCC controller supports analogue. DCC locos on analogue, simply will not respond unless the loco supports analogue. You'd need to use locos of the matching type.

I love class 60s. I have 3 versions of the Hornby class 60. Spectacular model wise, but have yet to run a train around curves without the front wagon being pulled off the track, even on 4th radius, which is disappointing. My 12 older less detailed noisy Lima versions are much more reliable even in their old age. (There's hope for me then?)

Point of note, the grey showing through the orange was likely a feature on the real thing since that particular livery was a bodge of Load Haul branding over the top of the old Railfreight grey. It may even have just been vinyl overlays in reality. Whether or not Hornby managed to recreate this deliberately or through some lacklustre painting is a different matter altogether though.....

hi sam.. a decent looking loco from hornby. i have now come to expect from all brands a few let downs some more than others. this loco falls under the latter.. pricing as usual a bit to high at over 200 quid although accurascale are quickly reaching this level of pricing with the announcement with the new class 89 which costs 40 quid plus more than their own class 92.

I like Hornby's class 60, have 3 but purchased all 3 second-hand as new price is to high for me considering the prices when I bought my 3 of the Hattons 66's and recently the Accurascale Deltic. £200.00 rather a lot for an old design in my opinion but a good bargain second hand. Didn't realise the model as as old as 2005 but I guess Hornby will just keep updating the liveries and do nothing with the rest of the model. Maybe Cavalex or Accurascale will come up with an improved version sometime in the future

Cracking review again Sam and a lovely machine. It’s a tad of quite a compromise this apparently; super details over solid bogie engineering internals. At 200 GBP RRP the latter should have been addressed towards a very decent level. At 124 GBP one can’t complain. However at 160 GBP, well that would be quite the mixed bag indeed. We personally go for engineering solidness over details as highest priority. However, we certainly can see people in the hobby would choose differently. The main question perhaps is, with such shoddy bogie internals as they are, how many running hours can one expect without major wear, to be fair…

Sam great video as usual. You been doing a lot of diesel lately but it is good change . I am not into diesels but I am beginning to warm up to them especially with the ones you have been reviewing. I wouldn’t pay the Hornby retail price but what you paid is more like it. Nice engine keep up the variety I really enjoy it. Keep up the great work from The USA cheers.

I do love my Class 60s in my display collection, even though they all have sound. Recently purchased the three latest versions, taking my total to over twenty, when Hornby offered 20% off.

So hornby can produce good engines ( referring to this engine as an example ) but ok rolling stock ( referring to the disaster that was the coke on the lomac as another example )

I expect so, but I wouldn't recommend buying direct from Hornby as they charge you the full RRP - much better to use a retailer that offers a discount - Hatton's is one that ships overseas, also try TMC, Derails models or Model Railways direct. Also worth seeing if anyone in Canada stocks Hornby - that could save you on postage! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Looks Awesome but the question needs to be asked is why can't Hornby produce all their Diesels to this level. It's hard to fathom what Hornby are thinking when you compare this to the abomination of their Class 66. Go figure! Another great review Sam.

Hornby's been having weird issues with their box coloring, I got the Hornby LSWR Terrier recently when nearly every retailer was selling it bargain price and noticed the box color was obviously different from the model. I wonder if that's why they've been so cheap.

Hornby have a Box Colour issue with all their LSWR engines - whilst the locos match each other in colour, the box artwork doesn't. But they are consistent in the colour of the models, at least.

I think it should be made Mandatory that they put the date is was created in the listings. 2005 may be fine for some but for others this may anger people. It is on the box so it isn't like Hornby is trying to hide it, why not just put it on the seller's listing page aswell so people know BEFORE buying and can decide if it is worth it or not.

Just bear in mind that this is the design date, and not the manufacture date - this will most likely have been manufactured much more recently than when first released! I agree the date of manufacture would be good to include - all of Bachmann's boxes have this! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I have a older Hornby class 60 in the blue EWS TEES STEEL livery probably from around 2011-12 and the lighting on it has changed. The circuit board now has clipped wires to its lights when you showed it during the body removal. My model has the older unreliable light pick up system in the model so the newer lights being plugged in are a definate an improvement compared to older class 60’s. Those awful metal spring pick ups to make sure the lights are lit, hardly work on my old one 🤣
