Life in the 60s was very different that what it is today. Many of the things that people used to do would make parents cringe and freak kids out. For some, these things may seem strange but they were fine for anyone growing up during the decade. In this video we will take a look at some of the crazy 1960s things that were once normal.

Car seats? Hah! I remember standing on the front passenger seat while Mom drove to the store. I remember lying on the back window shelf taking naps on long distance driving trips. I remember sitting on Granddaddy's lap 'steering' the car. Or lying with my head in his lap watching the odometer ticking over (he always made sure I was awake when a milestone rollover was going to happen...50,000 was a great number!). Oh, and lying on the floor in the 'way back' of the station wagon as Daddy drove the switchbacks down a mountain road, rolling back and forth and thinking it was the funniest thing ever. And sitting in the front seat meant that I always had the "mom seatbelt"...she'd do that move where her arm would shoot out to hold us in place if she had to brake suddenly. Adult me knows car seats in the back seat are best for kids but kid me remembers the years where we had free reign in the car very fondly.

I do remember the Mom hand across the body while standing on the seat next to her driving. I grew up out in the country. And when deer crossed in front of the car, was when that usually happened. We had a station wagon and I would crawl over the back seat a lot. And when we went to the local drive in movie . They had a foam mattress covered in vinyl my Mom made , so I could fall asleep at the very back and not disturb them. If it was a gory movie I would peek over the back seat , until I got scared enough to lay down. :-)

You're so right, thats a scent one won't ever forget. Like rubber babydoll hair. Cant count the times I fell off back seat into floor of car when mom slammed onto the breaks! The hours of trying to comb through hair after all that teasing and the amount of hair loss. Its a wonder anyone had hair. And, yes, our ironing board stayed upright mainly for hair, not clothes. I got one of the flower maker kits and spilled red liquid on our linoleum in the den. Had to cover it the stain with a throw rug. Daddy wanted to strangle me, lol. We used to fly a lot since my dad worked for the airlines. We were SO glad when smoking sections were done away with! Considering the stupid stuff we did with bikes (Evel Knievel style), it's a wonder we didn't have any serious injuries.

Funny enough, Mattel re-released the Creepy Crawlers toy for a time back in the 90's. But instead of it just being a hot plate would molds it was made to look like an over. You would fill up the mold and then used a spatula that was included to insert it into the heating unit. So there was less change of burning yourself. But I'm sure there were kids who found a way to burn themselves regardless of how safe it was made. A kid I went to school with had one. :)

When I was a young teenager, and my mom made me start shaving, she bought me the same razor my dad used. It had a coiled up blade inside of it, which you advanced once a week. I hated cigarettes and I hated other people make me smell like them. During the night one night, I woke up and screamed because my mother was leaning over my bed and was looking right in my face! She scared the heck out of me! Turned out that she was smelling my breath for cigarette smoke (and found that I had not been smoking, like I said.) I was so happy when the laws began to protect those of us who did not want to breathe other people's cigarette smoke. By then, I had developed allergy and asthma problems made much worse by those damned cigarettes that people smoked.

Then test it on a piece of newspaper to be sure it wouldn't scorch. Then if was ready to curl your hair up. You had to reheat the iron for each curl. It was a long, slow process. It was either that or sleep on rollers. When electric curlers came along, it was a dream.

Loved my Thing Maker - it was the smell. My sister had a toy oven with a real element in it. We baked a baseball in it once (because "why not?"). It smoked like the dickens and stunk up the whole house. I still remember it fondly. Smoking everywhere. Planes. Restaurants. Movie theatres. Then they moved smokers to the bar only at restaurants and to the side sections of the cinema - like that helped. In the 80s we had to replace a slashed dcreen at the thestre where I worked (union trouble) and the screen was a light bronze except for the top where the top curtain covered it Crazy times. But we survived and thrived. And dont wven get me started on the playgrounds ...

Aqua-Net. I have very strong associations with the scent of Aqua-Net. Whenever I smelled that, it meant my parents were going "out." I had only vague notions of what "out" was, although I would learn in later years why they were often fighting when they came home from "out." 🤐

I think the reason we got away with so much was our parents were both raised in city’s. In apts. They had us & moved to the suburbs. They were young too. By the time they had five kids he was 30 & she 26! You want to know what I was doing at 26? 😂 Everything was new. We had bikes, went skiing, sledding & skating every winter. No rinks, ponds. Every summer she would drive us out to my grandparents beach house. No life guards. Just a different time

I remember during Vietnam every one of draft age (including myself) was glued to the tv when the draft lottery numbers were being drawn. The lower the number the more likely you were going to be drafted. Old enough to fight but not to vote. I remember at 18 I bought an inexpensive new car and couldn’t even have it in my own name. Hi Jodie! 👋😁🇦🇺

Still have an old creepy crawler set in the closet. Little worse for wear. Born in 1970 but youngest of lots of siblings. Hand me downs of all the toys so I remember most everything. My mother would iron my sisters hair. My brother made bugs from the creepy crawlers set constantly. Lawn darts, drive in movies sleeping in the back window. Playing outside all day with no supervision. Walking home from school at 8 years old. Walking up to Woolworths alone to buy candy. Had 21 acres behind our house. We would jump our fence and walk through the woods for hours. When I was around 6 my brother and I put up my dad’s army tent and we camped in the back yard all night alone. It was freezing.🥶 Remember riding in the back of my mother’s bike in a seat attached. Metal with a little padding. No seatbelts. With so many brothers and sisters my mother probably never knew where we were but we were together. We had a great time. Made us tough. But thinking about it now I’m amazed we survived.

We all know now how extremely dangerous lead is. My 2 yo niece got lead poisoning by eating paint chips off the walls. She had the highest levels of lead in her blood that the Drs ever seen n would’ve died soon if she had not been taken to the hospital. She had a hard time in school n was called retarded. She was smart in other ways tho. At around age 52 she had been feeling poorly for awhile n she was ultimately dx’d with ALS. Studies show that lead poisoning n ALS are positively correlated. No one knew what the consequences were for lead poisoning especially long term. My niece is now age 60 n life is very difficult for her. There have been some advances in medications for ALS in the past 7yrs. If it weren’t for this , my niece wld not likely still be here. I understand the Chinese govt still allows lead in paint in 2025! And those products aren’t allowed here but they can n do still get thru somehow. So always be vigilant about lead poisoning from any painted surface. Pottery, jewelry, furniture n especially paint on the walls if your house was built before 1978.

Lead based Christmas tinsel also looked better, hung better on the tree and was fun to step on and make imprints in when the tree came down! I used one of those razors one time a few years ago. I cut myself five or six times. LOL strangely enough, none of the cuts hurt. Still, once was enough. I failed chemistry in high school, but one of those chemistry kits would have been fun. My elementary school was built around 1929. The upstairs was condemned when I was there in the early '80s due to asbestos. They put up partitions in the gym to make classrooms. It got torn down about 1984 and a new school was built.
