Good advice, however, public finances are different in the respect that the money supply must always grow, otherwise the old debt cannot be serviced. Some of this growth (and corresponding new debt) needs to come through government, as both economic stimulus through spending and also to ensure that not all the debt burden is placed on private citizens. A good question might be… where are the nation's investments? In a system of growth and so-called real-terms wealth, why is any nation's government not running a surplus through its investments? Particularly the largest capitalist nation on the earth? Ok, some rhetorical stuff in there (i.e. too much of that growth going to already super-wealthy private individuals and corporations), but seriously, where are these capitalist countries' investments and why aren't they offsetting the debts? (Here in the UK, take a look at the Crown Estate for some answers.)
