Have you tried the 4" or 6" Spooltek swimbaits for those beach tarpon? I wonder if they would stay buttoned better than a traditional swimbait...anyhow congrats on an epic tarpon day!

stratpaulguy86 I have! They get bit good but due to the system with the hook pulling out of the lure with spoolteks, the heavy lure bouncing around several inches from the fish creates an imbalance that makes it easy to throw the hook. Landed a few on them, but the ratio isn’t really any better than a bait buster. Those hogys that I was using specifically have an extra bad ratio, but they get bit the best. I’m working on some things that might help.

@@randyd1471 my favorite tarpon lure is a DOA Terroreyz...most of my residential fish are between 10-40lbs with the occasional 50lb+ fish. Our seasonal run of large river tarpon between 80-120lbs in east central FL usually starts around September and runs until early November if it stays warm. I just wish the hooks on those Terroreyz were better or could be rigged with a circle hook.

Good fight. I personally use heavier line 65lb all day and 80-100lb mono. No point in using 30-40lb braid on bigger fish, since the diameter of the line is barely smaller with braid. I consistently catch larger fish when other ppl fishing with me get broken off because they use lighter line and too short of a liter.

William Bonilla depends on the reel size and what I’m fishing for. Typically for these tarpon, a 5k size reel I’ll use 30, and go up 10-20 pounds every size reel I go up, depending on the reels drag capabilities and just utter strength of it.

If you're tarpon fishing, set the hook with a tight drag at least 10 times or more. These guys were trying to set the once lightly like they're trout fishing, it's nearly impossible to keep a tarpon hooked setting the hook like that.
