I drive bus, he's dead on right. If you're not bouncing back and forth, you can kill someone as you can't see through the thick pillars. Flyers and Nova buses both need work. In my country there made in Winnipeg and Montreal Canada. This guy really knows his stuff and the public really can learn something from him. Being a bus driver isn't as easy as people think, but I love my job. ATU proud.

There was time in the 70s and early 80s when buses had no A/C, no partition behind the driver and back windows. Oh yeah, the front and back doors were manual (there was a handle the driver would operate to open the front door, the passengers would open the back door to exit), and no electronic fare boxes. (honor system), with paper transfers torn off at the hour the transfer would expire.
@rumblinalong

70's and 80's??????? Where I drive we have handle for front and back doors, fareboxes usually work, but fares are looked at as donations so to me our fares are irrelevant and paper transfers are still part of our system and times are set between 90 minutes to 2-3, 4 or maybe 5 hours depending on the driver. You could show me a library card and still ride. Oh and that's so I don't have to go to the hospital after an assault. Oh and yes usually the A/C works, but hand buses earlier this summer in 40+Celsius .......no A/C and no tradeoffs

Ugh, I used to drive, and it’d always tick me off when kids be doing Tarzan moves out the bus blocking that front window in the process. The county transit authority where I go to college uses boxes on Ford E-series vans and Gillig buses. Given the geography of the area, Gilligs are clearly very capable vehicles. The drivers always complain that the buses aren't maintained very well, yet they still climb the steep hills just like any other heavy vehicle I've operated (I grew up on a farm in an area with similar geography).

One of the bus drivers on my route in the morning does that as well. When she is pulling out of the station she'll quickly open the doors and look out, and then close them while she's turning. Awesome to watch and never thought about how the door seam creates such a dangerous blind spot.
@wxkat

I’ve seen a lot of local bus drivers do the same when they are at an intersection where they are making a left turn. The only downside I’ve seen with that is that it turns off the “Stop Requested” sign (if it was lit before the turn). This means that either the driver has to remember if someone wanted to get off at the next stop, or a passenger wanting to get off has to pay attention and request the stop again as soon as the doors are closed after the turn.

Yeah. That mirror blind spot is the worst. Approaching a roundabout, traffic coming from the left at the same speed can be obstructed all the way to the roundabout. Its terrifying. As drivers we need to organize and force Gillig and other manufacturers to make that mirror adjustable, slide it up or down to accommodate tall or short drivers to ge that mirror out of the way.

How are the right mirrors on an intercity bus set up? I’ve noticed on my transit bus that I have a huge blindspot for traffic in the right lane when on the highway or any other area where I’m not curbside. The wideview mirror only shows so much and the narrow view mirror is pointed downward toward the right rear tire to negotiate turns, which leaves a huge blindspot on the right. It’s like I need a third right side mirror.

Sometimes management does not help the situation by specifying buses with visual obstructions. One example can be security screens that have maskings that block the driver's over the shoulder view.

I can only imagine how bad it had to be for those B46 drivers when the ATS was knocked out on December 12, 2014. Those buses got so full that some basically had to stand right by the door just to avoid getting left behind, and people were _still_ forced to wait for another bus.

The biggest visibility issue is the GARBAGE headlamps on 80% of these buses. It’s honestly shocking how bad they are. Either they’re worn out from being in night run all the time, or the mechanics just install them wrong so they’re aimed incorrectly. Thankfully my company is in the process of making the fleet more electrified with exoterra and new flyers which have more advanced led headlights like what new cars have. As far as the self driving thing goes, I just hope I can get 20-30 years out of this gig and retire.

I had a route during the holidays last year that went through a busy shopping district. The road was so narrow that if a car was parked more than a few inches from the curb I would have to wait for opposing traffic to pass before I could swerve around it. During peak hours I would have to drive about 10 blocks at 5mph because pedestrians wouldn't even ATTEMPT to make eye contact with me before crossing the street in my blind spots. Super frustrating for myself as well as impatient passengers. One complaint that stuck with me was this guy who yelled out, "What are we on a tractor at a goat farm??!!!" Was hard not to start laughing at that one. 😂

On school buses, they have windows on the back door, but on some of them, the control panel is in front of the rear view mirror, making it useless. Also, once when I was driving through fog, the door windows were so foggy, I had to open them at intersections to look for traffic.

Man this whole situation seems very weird, and also bad. Like the bus may technically live up to regulations but the fact drivers have no input on the design and that such glaring design faults can make it past the concept stage is baffling to me. The front door especially. Like as a European I am baffled at the fact they are using a bulky double door for that when the width only warrants a single sliding door. Like a good comparison would be something like the VDL Citea which on its options with a narrow front door feature a single sliding door on the front with great visibility. Same goes for other models like the Mercedes Benz Citaro, the Ebusco 2.2, Iveco Crossway, Solaris Urbino, and many others. Like I think it also has to do with competition. In North America competition between manufacturers is very little and like you said bus drivers don't have any say so there's very little push for manufacturers to actually try and make their vehicles better for neither the Driver or passengers, since they know they're guaranteed deals almost no matter what. Like I know aestethics are a different thing but most North American bus models, and the Gilligs especially look like they're still stuck in the 90's designwise, including in their tackling of such issues which is just horrible, and further hinders the reputation of buses in North America. I mean compare a current Gillig or Novabus model, to the current models by MAN and VDL or even cheap manufacturers like Yutong and the difference is night and day.
@LuckyCharms777
@LuckyCharms777 Жыл бұрын
The entire concept of buses in the US is a matter of build and repair costs. An individual universal rectangular double door is cheaper to fix than a single door. The glass is cheaper and easier to replace when an angry person kicks and breaks it. Everything revolves around universal design, just like the US car industry had Oldsmobile, Buick, Chevrolet, and Pontiac using the same framework for cars. Those wonderfully expansive view single glass pane windshields are expensive compared to a flat split windshield.

What's your bus company's policy on capacity (assuming buses regularly get full in Sacramento)? Here in Chicago, most drivers will allow as many people as possible to cram into a bus as long as the doors close, resulting in multiple people blocking the doors(of course not during COVID). Is that the same thing with your company? or is it more limiting.
@BusDriverLife
@BusDriverLife 3 жыл бұрын
We definitely get full buses normally..we fill up until the white line so we can pack as many people in until that point..but currently at 14 people allowed..im sure that number will change soon with schools set to reopen this month. We’ll see...I know it gets really busy in Chicago!
@drdewott9154
@drdewott9154 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds weird. Here in Denmark at least there are listed capacity numbers both inside the bus and on the outside for how many passengers can legally be onboard. For some models its higher than others but as an example, a pretty popular model right now is the Yutong E12 Electric bus, which legally has room for 33 seated passengers and 33 standees, in a total of 66. Most buses have higher numbers, usually around 70-80 but even then that capacity is rarely used up since most can't figure out walking up into the backend, meaning the limit comes when additional passengers getting on can't get past the yellow line right behind the driver. Even if there are available seats in the back, then passengers can't get to them. The drivers will often yell "Move further back" to the passengers onboard but they can rarely comprehend moving up 2 steps into the raised back section.
@LuckyCharms777

@@drdewott9154 In the US, passenger capacity is routinely ignored, it’s more a matter of how many people can you cram inside. One reason for this is because it’s impossible for the operator to keep an accurate passenger count with people alighting through the rear doors. Another reason is because nobody wants to be left behind to wait for another bus no matter how crowded the bus is.

I drive a bus though the college I go to and sometimes the bus gets a overload that we can not fit anyone eals on the bus standing or sitting and the routes that get a overload is the route 30 route 31 and sometimes route 38 and route 39 most of the time I get stuck driving the route 38 and route 39 and they usually get a overload when there are parties at the other 3 colleges and the route 38 and route 39 gets mostly women college student passengers because the route 38 and route 39 go to all womens colleges and sometimes when the bus is a overload the passangers that are standing block the back door and the front do that it is hard to see over all the students on the bus and I have been the only boy on the bus with about 200 to 250 women passengers with me driving the bus

All BBC employees work low skilled jobs. Now back to the bus. I prefer the Gillig Phantom over the BRT. But if I had to choose a low floor model, it would be a Gillig Advantage or a Novabus LFS.

Some passengers are idiots who don't follow the rules but if get hurt want to sue or get the bus driver fired. When I did ride the public bus I did not stand up until the bus came to a complete stop .and I exited the front door not the back

It’s not that hard to drive a bus .. as long as you know use your mirrors and know where you blind spots are . I love NYCTA has pedestrian warning system. Don’t cross the white line federal law prohibits the operation of the vehicle. But let’s be real somethimes their a pack bus have people riding past that line ..

I think everybody's acting entitled nowadays it's because of the abundance of low floors vehicles. Every transit has them now, exacerbating people's sense of entitlement. It's a right, rather than a privilege. At least with high floors, the bus drivers had seniority, you knew you had the ball you knew YOU control the court, and everybody else knew their role, so to speak. Now with low floor dominated the bus market, the bus drivers LOST your seniority and basically everybody including the people who hired you walks over you. I mean we don't need low floors THAT much. Not EVERYBODY'S old or handicapped. Most people are just fat, lazy and entitled, and city managers, city planners, mayors and commissioners are looking for loopholes, sleazy deals, offshoring, importing, and fast easy money, via lobbying and scheming with automotive industries. The same MFs that criminalized JAYWALKING; they want to control and dictate how people use the roads.

Lol, are you really criticizing jaywalking being illegal on a channel centered on bus drivers, who are constantly hampered by jaywalkers?! 😂
