There’s actually an old folklore behind that “couple snack”. A long time ago, there’s a king and queen who rule with an iron fist. The villagers actually made figures of the king and queen from dough, stick them together, deep fried and eat them as a sign of disrespect towards the king and queen. After the king and queen was dethroned, the villagers got so used to this comfort food that it had become one of chinese‘s iconic food. Through time they’d stop making the figure looking dough but still maintain the 2 piece tradition

Hey what’s up Joel. Just finished watching the entire video. From porridge to jackfruit chips ha ha. Loved it. This was a great one and I enjoyed you taking me on this food tour. I totally love Rice porridge. That is like one of my favorite comfort dishes. I typically Get it with Fish, but I enjoy Any congee porridge. Yo the rice plate with the pork looks absolutely delicious. I am drooling and craving for that entire meal and I love the Chinese donuts. Well that’s what I call it. I typically get those with rice porridge as well. Man seriously that entire meal is my kind of breakfast. OK that’s so cool that the fruit tank smoothie shop it’s just right there. Something refreshing before you’re on your way. Super cool this is my first time seeing an egg in a glass jar like that. Well in that variation. I’ve had quail eggs with oysters as a shot drink. I think they call it an oyster shooter over here. But I would totally love to try what you had. The coffee and tea absolutely looks amazing. She’s so nice! I think I’ve tried jackfruit chips before and it is very yummy. Man this was such a great food tour and it’s giving me some hunger pains. You know Joel, I don’t watch very many KZbin channels as well. Probably just a handful. Yes sir your lot is a part of the handful ha ha. Say hello to Li for me. By the way I noticed the photo at the end with you and Li At the beach. So precious. Don’t forget to send me an invite to your wedding. We will definitely try to make it ha ha God bless you brother

Saibaidee Joel and Li! Perfect timing! I was just about to eat and find a video to watch while eating and yours popped up. Y'all are eating some of my favorite comfort foods. For the Kuay Jab, the noodles are rice noodles and they naturally curl up once cooked! In it's dried form the noodles are triangle shape but once you cook it in a hot liquid the noodles will just roll up. Also century eggs aka preserved eggs, are covered in clay (there are other methods as well). Such a unique taste!
@JoelsTastyRide3 жыл бұрын
Broooo Sonexay man, I do not remember where you told me your heritage is from actually, but could it be in this general area? All man I guess just with Thailand, the northern areas I just better explored, the north area of Laos as well, but man I have always been drawn to the north east of Thailand and south Laos because I just get such good and real vibes from the People’s history in these areas. Maybe not flashy, maybe it’s hot dusty and not so attractive to the calendar type travel trip, but it is real life and I just love the food they eat the way they live, I’ve always appreciated it… I know you do too so that’s why I am bothering to write all this ha ha :-) thanks for the info about the century eggs, I don’t know if these were made the traditional way but, that’s pretty awesome wrapping anything in Clay… And then thank you for the reminder of how the noodles take their shape. I gotta remember that

Stray dogs? My mother used to do that when she was able and while living out in the country. She would take in stray dogs, which at one time, there were 14 of them. Now that she is much older and has moved to town to live with me, she only has one little dog. All those stray dogs were well fed and well taken care of until they took their last breath. I remember one, mom named her Trixie, she was a butter color fox hound. She knew we loved her, and she loved us, and she always looking out for us. One day, we went further into our farm to collect firewood. We made a few trips, and she was trotting along with us, both ways. The last trip I was so exhausted, so I told my mother and my sister to go ahead while I was trying to rest a little. Trixie was trotting along with them, but when she didn't see me, she looked back and saw me sitting down, catching my breath; she walked back and stood next to me so I could lean against her body. She passed away a few years after that. I sure miss her. She was a special dog. So, my point to the story is this, when we give love, we get love in return.

All of it looked amazing to eat. Really can't wait for lockdown to end here in the UK so we can explore outside of our area, and find some thai style similarity until we get there next year! Then we shall buy you an amazing meal as a thank you for your videos haha. We learn alot from them and the culture so thank you Joel, your videos are much more interesting than Mark's (we love him too) purely because you explain EVERYTHING and that's what we are here for. Just from your videos of Thailand, I love it there and the people. even some of the food sounds good. Being vegan I don't eat some of it, but I've found several vegan copy cat recipes that make some of those recipes. I know it won't taste exactly the same without the meat or fish but I have liked everything that I've tried so far. The people there are so friendly. Thank you for the adventure.

Loved this video, as we all love all of your videos! Near to the end of the video where you bought a sour drink at the market, the way you handed her the money, did you experience that in Kenya? Here in South Africa if someone hands you money in that way it is a show of respect. Thank you for always being so humble and appreciative of everything and everyone around you!

Hi Narina! I’m sorry to have missed this message :-) I just noticed it today and yes, I do remember that from Africa but I remember clearly, I learned this for myself and started doing it after a trip to Myanmar. So I guess there are many cultural things like this around the world where people adopt some motion or movement to show respect, I just really appreciated it from Myanmar but this is cool, you’re right I remember it from Africa as well ♥️

Hmmmm, not so sure about this breakfast and nix on the eggs - neither 100/1000 year old or today’s fresh laid dunked in liquid of any kind - I’ll stick to coffee ‘n toast; breakfast got a whole lot better when you went to the Fruit Tank and the coffee stand in the market ... now you’re starting to speak my language! But of course I loved watching everything in the video. 🥰🥰🥰

Hi Miss Biggs :-) after just one year living in Southeast Asia I realized that I had been missing out on a WORLD of breakfast flavor... I can see that you have a bright future in this as well if you are used to coffee and toast, the same way that I was…

Awesome looking breakast.. I believe the Century egg, or skin egg, gets its name from its appearance before being de-shelled. They have this layer of grain husk encasing the egg which gives them the appearance of having an outer skin. Another fun fact, the origin of the fried couple dough stick has an interesting folklore. Its chinese name is you tiao (oily sticks) but theres also another name for it which is you char gui (oil fried devil). The devil here represents a traitor during the Song dynasty to frame a patriotic general back in the days, and the common folk created this dish as a act of silent protest, with each side of the dough representing the traitorous official and the other being his wife. I know .. this is a farcry of the romantic couple dip idea 555
