Absolutely love the video!! I dunno how many times i coughed watching the locos starting 😂😂 had they all been made by vw emissions wouldn't of been an issue they would of had them sorted!! 🤦 someone said about the locos cold starting....i did read some where that back in the day BR kept locos running during cold weather/weekends for fear of them not starting or taking for ever to come to life,things we take for granted almost today turning a key pressing a button and its ready to go but can only imagine what a train was like to start in the cold 🥶🥶 cars of the day were bad enough!! Great video!!
@cedarcam10 ай бұрын
BR did keep them running sometimes for days. I went to a shed where 20 x class 20 were running it was deafening, I asked why they did not shut them down over the weekend and they said because they do not start easily and can flatten the batteries.

😢i thought a old steam train🚂 gave off some smoke but these diesels show how to smoke🚈
@martinsims12732 ай бұрын
There's a proper way to fire a steam loco; a bright cherry red fire (which will quickly turn into a white hot fire when the blast gets pulling it through). Any smoke is unburnt fuel, caused by overfiring (too much fuel being put on at any one time).

Why are these engine not preheated? Cold starts are very bad for lifetime reasons. In Germany loco diesel engines are kept warm, therefore good starting with no smoke
@phareztrinimand Жыл бұрын
The smoke is raw diesel if I remember correctly
@fransstrous9809 Жыл бұрын
@@phareztrinimand Smoke is unburned fuel. When a cold diesel engine has unburned fuel in the exhaust then a lot of this go pass the pistons into the engine oil.

Cost for a start. The majority of these locos are in preservation, where keeping costs down is paramount. It wasn’t always done in BR days, either. If a loco was stored away from facilities they’d start like this.

White smoke is unburnt diesel and black smoke is burning diesel with insufficient air.

A lot of them don't have blockheaters/glowplugs/etc. - they were designed just to be cold-started and let the rough combustion heat the block up itself until it "caught"

“… until she went on a longish train-ride. I’m not sure she’d speak quite the same way, at least regarding a few antique trains running now and then.” Taking Amtrak to LA and back turned me into something of a train-nut. That said, routine wholesale use of “sooty trains” (and things like them) - not so sure it’s a good idea.

This is probably the biggest issue with diesels. In cold weather they seize up and don’t run quite as well. Steam engines can run in cold weather, thanks to their immense heat, and therefore don’t have this issue.
