The Kenmore pilot is likely a low time pilot who has not encountered many windy situations. If the prevailing winds over the rudder are higher than the wind provided by the propeller, the plane acts like a weather cock and swings to point into the wind. The only way to counteract that situation is to power the plane around using both propeller provided wind and the water rudders on the back of the floats. You cannot throttle back unfortunately because the prevailing winds will continue to weathercock the plane. Once the pilot has enough experience, he will power the plane around and continue to use power to keep it pointed in the desired direction. Generally, float plane pilots are doing the job to build time so they can become airline pilots. Some just enjoy flying floats and will become very proficient career float plane pilots. Twin engine planes can use differential engine power to keep straight and have far less problems than single engine planes. I flew floats for many years and it is always exhilarating to get landings and takeoffs perfect. Thanks Corrie for another great video.

Barry, the lounge is grateful you've taken the time to share some exceptional, knowledgable information, we sincerely thank you. I can well imagine, this video would have brought back a flood of memorable situations and experiences you encountered during your incredible flying career. I bet you have stories to tell, and I hope you will. I have been fortunate to fly with HA Captain Gavin on multiple occasions. Gavin flies both Otters and Beavers, and like you said, he just enjoys flying floats. Barry, your kind words and knowledgable engagement are what make the lounge a great place for aviation fans to visit, thank you. Best...Corrie

Ian, you are a huge contributor of knowledge, and we are eternally grateful. Real time experience gives insight and skill like nothing else. I can't express how grateful I am for the visitors to the lounge that share their knowledge, personal stories and simply join in the conversation. Best....Corrie

I'm thinking that if you aren't yet proficient in dealing with high winds, it might be safer to keep your plane facing into the wind, and letting the wind push you back to the docks.

It was a wild day at the harbour. Your comment makes sense to me. I think the pilot ended up doing just what you said. Nose into the wind, steer clear of objects big and small, and go backwards. Always grateful for your kind words, knowledgable engagement and support, thank you. Best....Corrie

Allan, isn't that is the truth, very challenging conditions. I was struggling too. You can see little vibrations in the video, that was wind gusts trying to knock me off my feet. I love a bumpy airplane ride, but I don't think many people enjoy it. This was a really fun seaplane spotting adventure and the edit was equally fun. Allan, I am truly grateful for your kind words, fun engagement and support, sincere thanks. I hope you noticed I tidied the lounge. It was a bit messy after the wind storm and the cleaners were on vacation. Best....Corrie

Great video Carrie. Flew the Otters over the years many times under those conditions. I'm in the cockpit for everyone of those takeoffs and landings. Loved the float flying.

Wayne, I bet you have some stories to tell! It must be a wild ride to watch this video. When I was recording this footage, I felt like I was in the right seat, jarring with every gust of wind, the motion of the skipping landings and the choppy waters tossing the seaplane like its a match stick. I thrive on excitement and this is it for sure! Thanks for your kind words, fun engagement and support, I am truly grateful. Best....Corrie

Gavin, it was wild! To watch a seaplane being pushed backwards by the wind, was a sight to behold. I'd never seen such a day at the harbour, it was awesome. The harbour patrol does an amazing job of keeping the harbour safe. I am truly grateful for your kind words, engagement and support, thank you. Best...Corrie

Looks like it is almost too windy to be flying. Some of those planes really struggled to get to the dock.

Almost too windy, are the right words. Some definitely struggled to get to the dock. It was quite a strange situation to be watching seaplanes drifting backwards, it worked. As always, I'm happy everyone is safe. Thanks for stopping by Richard, I am truly grateful for your kind words, engagement and support, thank you. Best...Corrie

@@leftcoastcorrieI think having a couple of seaplane pilots on board is going to make the lounge an even better place to be. We just need to keep on top of the cleaning and making sure the coffee machine works and we'll be set.

Hi Corrie, I enjoyed the video! Is it possible the one plane hanging out in the harbour was waiting for a berth at the dock?
@leftcoastcorrie
@leftcoastcorrie 24 күн бұрын
I think the plane hanging out was waiting for one to land. There was lots of room at the dock. I think it could have been a combination of factors. Debris in the harbour, waiting for an incoming, possible pilot inexperience with the horrendous winds. I pinned the first comment from a seaplane pilot, he has a great explanation, much better than mine. Thanks for your always kind words, engagement and support, I am truly grateful. Best.....Corrie

Those were some seriously sporty conditions! Another comment mentioned how difficult it can be to taxi downwind with high wind speeds. The weathervaning tendency can be greater than the water rudder authority. I've never had to deal with a situation this gnarly.

Meilleures salutations… Corrie.
