Troy played the bagpipes for this song back when this song came out on the Imaginarium album. He was a quest performer and did studio work with the band and played in live shows. He became a permanent member of the band around the time Floor became a permanent member. The Wakken 2013 concert has Troy on stage so Nightwish started to grow and evolve around that time. Their new album is gonna be great. Can’t wait till it come out in a few days!!

Check this out at Wacken 2013. Troy was there and formally joined right after, and it sounds very very similar. Part of Tuomas's genius is that even songs from the same album can vary drastically in tone and style. Noise and Harvest from the new album are completely different. I vote for Last Ride of the Day from Wacken or Seven Days to the Wolves from Wembley if you haven't seen it yet.

He is not playing bag pipes, but the Irish equivalent called uilleann pipes. The difference is that the uillean pipes use elbow-pumped bellows instead of a blowing piece and it sounds softer than the bag pipes.

He basically taught himself to play them as there aren't many teachers, and Troy wouldn't recommend learning them unless your slightly crazy.

He found some in Ireland eventually but by then he'd pretty much taught himself. He's just got a stainless steel set (probably unique) and the pipes are incredibly sensitive to heat and humidity. I'd have gone for titanium myself - lighter, stronger, and less sensitive to heat. The only downside is they'd be ridiculously expensive.

Troy, the multiinstrumentalist appeard first on the 2007 Nightwish Record "Dark Passion Play" as an studio guest musician. Later he became a special guest at some of their live shows. But finally in 2013 he became a full member of the band.

One thing I love about Nightwish is that they can all do whatever the hell they want and have it be GOOD. Tuomas can write whatever he wants, Troy can play roughly 5 different instruments in different ways, Emppu on the guitar and Kai on the drums are very versatile, and Marco and Floor are chameleons who can do basically whatever they want instrumentally (in Marco's case) and vocally.

I freaking love this song! It is from the Imagenerum album! I was on this tour in Germany and it was extraordenary! (Bt. Floor catched a cold on this tour! Troy was asked at the same time as Floor. Before that he was used as a session musician, joining them in Studio when they needed some pipes. But he Connected so well With the rest in the band, and especially Tuomas so he was asked if he wanted to join them on tour. He also has a sideproject Tuomas and his wife Johanna(??). It's more experimental folk music..

My absolute favorite when it comes to Nightwish is The Poet and the Pendulum. But you need to know the background first, of the firing of Tarja, Tuomas' depression and so on. He went back to his parents and stayed there for a while, while recovering from depression and anxiety. He did commit suicide in the song, to cope mentally, and so he didn't have to do it in real life. There is a few recordings of this song, but I found one with lyrics, which helped me a lot. I think it is the one from Wembley 2016. Remember to keep tissues at hand while hearing this song.

It is a slow one, a ballad from the old days. It's one of those songs in which you can really listen and enjoy Floor's voice to the fullest.

I don't think there's any specific order, besides The Poet And The Pendulum that should be saved for when you know a bit more about the band and its history. Since you mentioned Marko's different sides, I suggest The Islander - Live at Tampere. It's an accoustic song and one of the rare songs Tuomas didn't write mostly by himself - it was actually composed by Marko (and performed by him in the show).

For the whole history, Troy appeared for the first time in the album Dark Passion Play (for the songs The Islander and Last Of The Wild). The mood was so good between the group and him that they invited him for the tour. Tuomas wrote then many songs in the next album Imaginaerum (among it I Want My Tears Back) using uilean Pipes and flutes and many instruments because Troy can play so many instruments ^^ and sings too. And again the mood was so cool that he did the whole tour with the grouo, becoming like a true member, but not officially... Then the singer Annette Olson left the group (or got fired we don't know ^^) and they invited Floor Jansen to perform the last part of the tour ongoing (when you'll know a bit more the Nightwish songs, you should see the documentary "Please learn the set list in 48h"). Floor Jansen was not supposed to be the new official singer, even when they shot the concert live at Wacken. But the group was so happy with her that they announced that Floor was becoming the new official singer, and in the meantime Troy Donockley. They wanted to do the announcement before the live show came out in DVD because the group thought it was unfair to announce Floor and Troy as guests on the show if they already knew that they were official members of the group... Then they released the next album Endless Forms Most Beautiful from which you have the very inspiring masterpiece The Greatest Show On Earth, and here we are (and in a few days Human :|: Nature). The entire 2018 Buenos Aires concert is just as good as Waken 2013. You can't go wrong with any song. Heavier songs are 10th Man Down, Slaying the Dreamer, and Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean. But if you want to be placed into a hypnotic trance by Floor, Dead Boys Poem is a must!

Hey, my brother. Neal from NY here. Another great reaction, dude! You're so right, South American audiences are the bomb. I've seen it with the Stones, Rush and Nightwish. They really go nuts. And the band feeds off of it. I was a semi-professional drummer for many years until my back got too bad, and the more the audience is into it, the more the band feeds on it. It's a feedback loop. But hey, the audiences at Wacken are pretty cool too. North American audiences aren't nearly as awesome as Euro and South American ones. I guess you've heard that Troy was at Wacken. The pipes he plays are called Illyien pipes(the spelling is wrong but it's pronounced Illy-en). They're have a much warmer sound than Scottish pipes, not quite as shrill. If you want to hear Floor really growl, check out her other band Revamp. "Disdain" is a good one to check out. Anyway, cool reaction, bro. Have a good 'un!

Troy was helping the band before he got a permanent member - Troy and Floor became permanent members in 2013, but Floor was actually replacing Anette during 2012 worldtour. You have to watch the 2 hour interview with Toumas: learn the setlist in 48 hours - telling the story, and showing the background and the conditions in which Floor a the rest of the band, found each other. This is a must do!! I know you have jumped to 2018, but I want you to go back to 2015, - Wembley Arena, and react to Shudder before the beautiful. This is how to start a concert with 82.000 people, going from zero to lightspeed in seconds. And as I wrote before, you have just scratched the surface of Nightwish's capabilities - you may be ready for some of their epic songs. From Wembley: The Greatest Show on Earth - 22 minutes that I promise you have never experienced before. That is a masterpiece.

Troy and Floor joined the band in October 2013. Floor was still owned by the ReVamp project ( Music: Wild Card kzbin.info/www/bejne/faG9fnl3gb6YfcU ) - "Here Floor is free and it's my favorite version of her vocal craziness." NIGHTWISH: In the beginning of the band they used elements more compared to doom and gothic ( Music: the Carpenter kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGTQoqKahqytqqc ) . Slower songs, however, remained power metal. The biggest influence was Stratovarius, also from Finland. Instead of orchestra they used the keyboards to give a neoclassical atmosphere, the same as Stratovarius. What we hear in the lyrics must have been in Tuomas' mind since the first black metal band he played with the first bass player (Sami?).

Troy did some recording for the Imaginaerum album I believe. That was while Anette was the singer. I think he toured with them for that tour, and then Floor took over mid tour. After the tour is when Floor and Troy officially became band members. After the Wacken show in 2013. Watch me be wrong and find out Troy did the recording for Dark Passion Play too. I haven't really followed that period closely. I do like a lot of the songs from both of the albums though. As long as I don't watch the music videos and see those darn creepy clowns I'm fine.

I was shook when you spoke spanish! Lol awesome! And yea troy had already been working with nightwish back then, so you can see they had begun incorporating new sounds for a while now. Troy became a permanent member later on. Also this song comes from an older album before floor, where nightwish had a second vocalist after their original. Her name is Anette, she joined the band in 2007 after Tarja and the band split up in 2005 right after the end of an era concert was over (unbeknownst to tarja at the time). Anette was with the band til 2012, where floor joined in mid tour bc anette had gotten sick, but also among differences and perhaps unknown reasons, no longer continued in the band. Anette sang songs like this one, storytime, 7 days to the wolves, and the poet and the pendulum. Anette is often times disregarded because her vocals were never powerful enough to carry the band's sound, and she got a lot of hate unfortunately because having nightwish go from the powerhouse vocals tarja brought to a pop sounding vocalist, it was a lot for fans to process. Now, since floor brings the perfect mix due to her versatility, she is a perfect fit for the band... and her, nightwish and the fans couldn't be happier. Also let me take the chance and also explain that floor didn't come out of nowhere either. Here's the thing, back then Nightwish with Tarja was everything, not only to fans but to other bands alike. Nightwish basically pioneered/invented this genre of symphonic metal, and bands alike were completely inspired by the combination of classical/opera vocals accompanied by metal. Basically, you wouldnt ever dare to think of nightwish with any other singer, not even floor. Floor back then was around with her kick ass band After Forever, and even then loved Nightwish, and floor has always been well respected because of her known talent in her band and their performances. Floor even did a cover of one of Nightwish song back then, so she had always been on the radar, and after nightwish parted ways with Tarja, I honestly wished floor could be the new singer... but that was wishful thinking back then, little did I know lol ...anyway, the way the band parted with tarja was really shocking to everyone and tarja. The band handed her an open letter right after the concert was over, letting her go. This took the scene by storm, and there was a press conference in finland about it, tarja was in tears... it was a big deal. The letter frames her to be a greedy diva which many believed unfortunately, and a lot of the new fandom likes to use that to pit tarja vs floor, which is rather unfortunate.... and they accompany those statements with the fact that tarja had multiple outfit changes during her dvd concert. Floor actually changes a few times during wacken 2013, they just happen to be all black outfits while tarjas were way more noticeable with going from yellow to white to red etc. What I can say as a fan of both, is that in these last 15 years of tarja being a solo artist, that woman has been nothing but a kind heart as she had always been since day 1 in nightwish, and you'll notice that once you see her perform and smile all the time in those videos... and she even performed with floor one of nightwishs cover songs. Sooo, with all this info (sorry for thr long post lol) I hope you can understand why the Poet and the pendulum will be an important song, but I also hope you can understand floors trajectory and to not let anyone pit you against neither her or tarja. Once you start checking out tarja videos, you can start with The phantom of the opera, marco will blow you away too. For now, I ask u to react to Song of Myself wacken 2013! Troy was on the Wacken concert, but absent in the songs you’ve reacted to. He was a session player in the studio already in 2007, did some shows on the following tour, did the whole Imaginaerium tour 2012-13 before being asked to be a proper member of the band in the summer of 2013, the same day Floor got the same question. It was made official during the autumn.

Yeah, this song was written for the Imaginaerum album, and Troy was already playing the pipes as special guest. He actually started playing with nightwish in Dark Passion Play, and you can spot him in the Islander video playing pipes on a cliff. The Islander, is the first song featuring the pipes, and the first NW folk sounding song of a series (every album has at least one since DPP): after the Islander and I want my tears back, i recommend My Walden (which sounds like part 2 of the song you reacted to) and Harvest, the second single of the upcoming album Human:||:Nature. If you want hear something REALLY different just listen this one... :).

Actually I want my tears back is from the album Imaginaerum. Troy started to record the Uillean Pipes since Dark Passion Play and started to Tour with the band an even participante in the Movie Inspired by the Imaginaerum album. He is on the cover of the Wacken Open Air Concert and he is an official member of the Band since then, check Endless Form Most Beautiful Album and the most recent one that is call Human || Nature.
