Learn tips & tricks about RC Touring Car Racing as I learn them. Follow me on my venture to hone my skills in the on road side of RC!
Off Road Racing is fun, with jumps, bumps and power slides. Having experience with dirt tracks and Astro tracks, wet tracks and dry tracks, I thought it was about time to see if I could transfer some of those skills to a carpet track.. I discovered very quickly how different these cars handle, precise and instant is how I would describe them and nothing like what I was used to.
After the success of my last visit to Ulster Model Car Club I thought I would try and up my game by using a new Transmitter (Sanwa M17) and treating my car to a new set of wheels and tyres. I found out very quickly that there was more to it than just throwing them on the car and going racing.
After my first disaster on track, one of my fellow racers “Chris B RC” talked me through what was needed to properly prep new tyres for the track.
Racing was tight, finishing at times less than 1 second apart after a 5 minute race!!

I had brarnd new tyres too so here's a wee look at whys and hows, the prep works! (1) New tyres have a shiny surface and a centre bead line that normally takes ages to wear down on track, (ask the frontie guys!) By ages I mean a number of runs which with a condensed open practice and 3 qualifiers it somewhat creates the need for tyres to be right from Q1. (2) I use a very fine sandpaper to just tickle the shininess off the tyre surface and then use the edge of the folded paper to press a little harder on the bead line. (3) The sanding process does warm the tyre up slightly so once I've sanded down and then cleaned with the microfibre and brake cleaner, I apply additive (4) I keep my tyres fairly wet throughout the day (5) After a run, like in full scale motorsport parade laps etc the warm tyres pick up all sorts of marbles, fluff and general dirt off the surface - like I pointed out your tyres had this layer of "scum" which does nothing to aid fresh additive application. (5.1) I think I cleaned yours, sanded them down, cleaned again - applied additive. The difference in your car afterwards makes me look a touch more sane :) (6) After a run/marshall stint, I brush the wheels out and stick them all on the sander again, mostly by this stage they only really need brake cleaner on a cloth - similar to sanding the microfibre cloth warms the tyre up slightly so more additive goes on while warm. (6.1) My car is on setup station after every run so tyres are done after this stage, bolted back onto car and additive coated. No surface contact until the carpet next run.. You're very welcome to come across and use tools anytime 👍 Turned into a great video and a masterclass from us both in close and respectable racing...

Totally makes sense now, but I was thinking being an rc car that a few laps of practice would have been more than enough… I learned the hard way that it wasn’t 🤣 Thanks again for the help ☺️

@@TimsRcsurgery Understandable thinking really, probably get away with it on a TT02 👍 Looking forward to the last 3 rounds and hopefully see you racing tarmac? Tyre warmers outdoors are class 😁 I'll be dipping into 2wd 1/10 o/r and 1/8th ebuggy too 🙂

@@TimsRcsurgery bought my first touring rc car 1/10 a absima v2 but since money was important chise the 540 brushed version. I am used to small brushless so it will be comparably slower but still 25mph is more than enough for the use i intend. Hope to like this new rc and planing to also use it to drift.

Blue car should have moved. If he's already being lapped then he should move over...he's not in contention so why race the leader when you're already a lap down

The steering rate is to fast. You can tell by the way it jerks when it turns. Smooth is fast. Took me years to get hat in my. head.

I’m not so sure, I use steering rate all the time, it’s one of my first things I’ll show new guys.. I have speed turned down, dual rate down and probably about negative 15 expo. I’m used to 1/8th buggies, and this was only me second time racing touring cars (new tyres this time too which I didn’t know how to scrub in) But yes, maybe it could still do with a tweak… it’s early days yet 😃
