Awesome festival that happens every year in Schwabisch Hall. I actually don't know too much about it - other than the fact that the chicken saves the town. But it is a great time.

The anniversary of a chicken saving your whole town from burning down seems to me like reason enough to have a party.

"Guns and cannons and explosions, a basic german festival" haha dude, nailed it! But for a original german festival you just need a marching band and a lot of beer! Greetings from cologne.
@unapatton19787 жыл бұрын
In my region you just need beer. No cannons, no marching bands. A lot of them are quite gothy. This looks strange to to me, too. And in autumn you need lots of onions. Greetings from Weimar.
@Kurikost_7 жыл бұрын
german too...looks also very strange to me. To be honest, for the most germans, it is just another opportunity to drink beer.
@hildajensen62637 жыл бұрын
Not German myself, but I have family in Hamburg. North Germany isn't really into the marching bands and costumes.- But they'll take any excuse to drink beer and eat sausage and pretzels. Herring swimming up the river = beer A kitchen boy made potato salad 200 years ago = beer Noisy chicken = beer And that's just fine with me.

Hilda Jensen marching bands are kind of a thing of smaller towns/villages by now. Of course there are bigger towns which will try to revive that feeling, but it's not the same as in a small town where everyone knows eachother

Since Schwäbisch Hall is my hometown, let me clarify things a bit (a few things have been explained already, like the small, made-from-wood houses and how a small fire could ruin a whole town, so I won't elaborate on that): Those people in traditional costume are the "Sieder" a kind of tradional dress and re-enactment group. Schwäbisch Hall used to be a really wealthy town in the middle ages due to its salt well (that still exists) and back then, the "Sieder" (saltmakers) had the job to spilt the salt from the water. Back then, salt was also called "white gold" becaue it was so valuable. So Schwäbisch Hall got very rich and was allowed to print its own coins - it even had its own currency, the "Heller". The festival in the video is the "Kuchen- und Brunnenfest" ("cake and well festival"), the traditional festival of the "Sieder". It's been celebrated for a long long time, dating back to the 14th century.

THE HELLER !!! YES,. In Medieval Days it had been the leading exchange currency next to the REGENSBURGER PFENING. All traide contracts had been based on the HELLER or the REGENSBURGER PFENING back then. You still have the prove in the saved documents in the City, Church and State Archives.

I love how most towns in Germany have their own festivals. In my town (Langen in Hesse) we have an "Ebbelwoifest" (Apple wine festival) where basically people drink lots of hessian apple wine and later town residents who are new in the town get apple wine poured over them to value them as full residents of the town. In fact this festival is treated like a religious holiday with all shops being closed and with no school on that day. It's just great!

Medieval cities could not expanse like cities (sometimes) can today. There was often a big wall or a creek (as natural) around the city center for protection. Houses were pretty dense build. Only the wealthy citizens could afford stonehouses ( roofs were always of wood ). So a small fire could burn a whole city to the ground with in a few hours. No fireworkers, maybe only one water well for the whole town... Im not from that region, dont know the tradition exactly but it must have a big thing that people were aware of a fire once upon this day when the chicken screamed....
