The festival actually started at the chapelle you passed in the beginning. And the name Wurstmarkt comes, because over time there was a lot of sausages offered and of course eaten. I just live 5 mins away😍

In my opinion, the wine festivals in the small villages along the southern wine route are much more beautiful.They are much more on a family basis and less on the commercial.They are simply much more comfortable.

Yes, German wine culture is as important as its beer culture, even in Bavaria. The north of Bavaria contains the wine region Franconia.

Grew up in Bad Dürkheim and visted the Wurstamrkt every year. Love it. By the way price for the wine tasting is 25€ not 120€ ;) Don't know if it is already answered, but the name orignated from the beginning. It was a pilgrim market based on the chappel you saw in the beginning of your video. And these pilgrim neded something to eat and drink. So on the same area where trhe current Wurstamrkt is located they served sausages. The wooden tents is also the base of the Wurstmarkt. They are called Schubkarchstände which orginates from Schubkarre (wheelbarrows). When the winegrowers pushed the wines onto the fairgrounds in wheelbarrows and when they got there, they simply turned the wooden carts over and placed the barrels on them for serving.

Love that you made a video about the Wurstmarkt. As a Palatinate, it always bugged me that everyone in the US knows about Oktoberfest and Oktoberfest is copied everywhere, but hardly anyone in the US knows about Wurstmarkt, even though Wurstmarkt is way older and even is the world record holder as the largest wine festival, which should make it a cultural event of at least equal significance. About the "Dubbeglas": This Palatinate term refers to the dents on the glass (which are there to give you a better grip when it's warm and water condenses on the outside of the glass), if you translated it to high German (which we don't) it would be Tupfenglas, which literally means: dotted glass. They are very popular on Wurstmarkt and many other smaller wine festivals in Palatinate, but you do also see similar shaped glasses without dots. The common sizes of the glasses in Palatinate are called "Schoppe" (0,5 liter) and "Värdel" (High German: Viertel, 0,25 liter). Many people on those wine festival like to drink the (cheaper) wine mixed about 50:50 with sparkling water (saurer Schorle), some people also like white wine or rose wine mixed with Sprite (or another clear sweet citrus lemonade) or rose wine mixed with Fanta ("Persching", which is the Palatinate word for Pfirsich/peach and derives from the color of that hellish mixture, not the taste).

Germany has 13 dedicated wine regions and 5 of them are located in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz (Ahr, Mosel, Mittelrhein, Nahe, Rheinhessen & Pfalz). And the world's biggest wine trade fair is also held in Germany (ProWein in Düsseldorf) every March. In addition... the consumption of beer in Germany decreases year by year whereas wine consumption increaes constantly.

You don't have to book accommodation in Bad Dürkheim itself. You can find hotels in Ludwigshafen or Mannheim and ride the tram to Bad Dürkheim. And it is always the time of and between the 2nd and 3rd weekend in September

I haven't visited the Wurstmarkt for 35 year's. Was there last saturday. At the Weindorf for Porkloin and Rosé schole. Train ride was quite chaotic. Fun time.

This is the first time I heard of this festival, to be honest, so I don't know if there is any special origin to the name, but it seems rather common that many such festivals started out as special days in medieval times where all the farmers and peasants from a region would meet in some town or city to trade stuff and over time that morphed into the kind of festival we know today. Where I grew up they had the "Bietigheimer Pferdemarkt", originally a annual horse market and they still call it that, even though nobody is trading horses there anymore nowadays.

RQOTW: The Wurstmarkt first was called this name in 1832 when there was a (more than usual) high consumption of sausages. You shouldn't be that surprised about the number of women in dirndls. Most German regions have a Tracht (traditional clothing) for women that's similar to a Bavarian dirndl. And as wearing Tracht has fallen out of favor in most regions outside of dedicated events and clubs, we fall back on the Bavarian version. Besides that, the Palatinate was part of (the kingdom of) Bavaria until zje end of WWII as our Prince-Elector of the Palatinate Carl-Theodor inherited Bavaria in the 18th century - converted to catholicism and moved the court to Munich (including the court-orchestra) where he founded the first natural landscape garden known as the "Englischer Garten" which is larger than Central Park in New York. Because of the historical connections to Bavaria, the Palatinate has its own parliament within Rhineland-Palatinate (unlike the other parts) which administers some 20 institutions like theatres, museums, hospitals, and our local energy provider. There are some other connections between Bavaria and the Palatinate, e.g. only exceptional students from Bavaria and the Palatinate are eligible for a scholarship by the Maximilianeum in Munich.

Tracht clothes were rather rarely similar to Dirndl before the 20th century, and even in Bavaria rarely before the 19th century (that is around the time the Dirndl was invented by the Munich upper class). And Lederhosen were on the way to extinction before they were reanimated by a Bavarian teacher and his regular drinking comrades - much to the amusement of the village they lived in.

Did you know that there is a german-turkish Weingut in Lorch? They used to have a Straußwirtschaft serving turkish food but right now they (only) do Kochkurse. Weingut Mohr sounds like a nice place to learn to cook turkish food and drink delicious wine. I do hope they will re-open the Straußwirtschaft!

You snubbed the Giant Barrel by calling it a "barrel-shaped building". It is actually a real barrel, the biggest wooden barrel in the world, constructed by a master cooper and consisting of wooden staves all around. It was just constructed for the world record and never intended to be actually filled with wine though. The world's biggest wine barrel that was actually used for storing and aging wine is the one at Heidelberg Palace, which can hold 221,726 litres of wine and is much smaller than the Dürkheimer Fass, which could theoretically hold about 1,700,000 litres if it weren't for the built-in restaurant.

There are so many beautiful smaller wine festivals in Germany. Cost of wine tasting, too expensive - it depends on what wines are tasted a bottle of top Riesling costs sometimes 20 € and more - some a few hundred, and treats there are probably in addition. Riesling from the Rheingau was once more expensive than Bordeaux wines.

The cost is that high because you sit in the big wheel during the whole wine tasting, which is a pretty expensive ride without the wine tasting, I think they charge about 5 Euros for a pretty short ride normally. But yes, unless you are really really keen on riding the big wheel for an extended period of time, I'd strongly recommend separating those two pleasures and get just a regular short ride on the wheel and a much cheaper regular ground based wine tasting elsewhere.

Sausage market: By former times, people would slaughter some of their animals before winter, so that they would not run out of hay and other food for them. And then they made ham and sausages and so on to make the meat keep ok during winter. The more perishable food like Leberwurst had to be eaten right away, and the soup where the sausages had been boilt in, Metzelsupp, is loved by the people until today. So sausages were being sold and food eaten as well... Ok, who eats much will drink a lot. In that region wine is being made since the time of the romans. Well, as times go by ... meanwhile there are less farmers slaughtering their pigs in autumn. But still there's wine and the party goes on. Well, one hundred years ago, when my grandparents were teenagers, the main point was food, wine, and music (according to ancient fotos - I have a nice one of my granny with some guys). Well, the way of having a party changed, but through all times, people just were having a good time at the Sausage Market.

2:17 thats not quite true Near me, Saale-Unstrut-Region, in particular Freyburg (Unstrut) and the region around is Famous for its wine Also Freyburg has its own Weinfest (Wine Festival). Also when you speak about the Oktoberfest (or Wies'n) you normally have to consider also the Wiese (Eisleber Wiese). It takes place since 1521, so it should had 500th aniversary last year. This aniversary has caught up this year.

Wurstmarkt actually origined in a pilgrim's market to a St. Michael's chapel. As people wrote here as well, it was called Wurstmarkt later on because people ate so many sausages. At a stall this year they actually sold postcards with historic pictures that looked like what the Wurstmarkt must have been like in ca. the 19th century (not sure they were authentic, though). It's nice to see a video about this! This truly is something people grow up with in my home-area Pfalz. I guess almost everyone has a story to tell about when they went there... To be honest, Oktoberfest is way bigger and there are way more people there, but I much prefer our palatinate culture and wine to beer. I am pretty sure the people in Lederhosen and Dirndl at the Wurstmarkt were no locals. They would more likely be wearing a t-shirt by "WNSTR" or "Pfalzkind", regional clothing companies with palatinate themes. Also, there are always lots of American people there! We went on the first Saturday this year and I think I never saw that many Americans at the Wurstmarkt before. I am happy you enjoyed it, though I have to admit the party only starts in the evening, except for "literarischer Frühschoppen" on Monday ;-)

Yeah, while the traditional 19th century Palatinate clothing does look quite similar to Bavarian Tracht apart from the color scheme, Palatinates usually aren't traditionalists that way. Those who do value Palatinate tradition and practice the dialect etc. usually don't cosplay as 19th century farmers while doing it and those who wear Tracht to Wurstmarkt are almost certainly tourists from further away, not native Palatinates (though native Bavarians might be among them).

Know, in USA you like it big (all is bigger in Texas, even Texas is bigger in Texas :) There are many "big" festivals in Germany. I do not like the Octoberfest. But the Cannstatter wasen is very interesting (as it was in the past a celebration for farmers), or the Heiligengeistfeld fest in Hamburg or the local Kirmes in the Center of the Ruhr. I have not visited all of them :) And all of these have very long traditions (except the wasen 1818 and Octoberfest 1810), as they were often based on medieval markets... Near I was born, you find for example the Telgter markt, or Maia Geburtsmarkt. A 400 Year old Horse- and Jahrmarkt... - But I prefer the small wine festivals at the Mosel or the romantic Rhine... Coz I like it smaller :)

Das ist wahr, Oktoberfest kennt jeder. Nur gibt es parallel dazu zahlreiche andere Feste, die traditionell für jede Region stehen in der sie stattfinden. Wer auf sein Geld achten muss, sollte definitiv nicht zum Oktoberfest gehen! Gehen wir mal von einem Preis von 15€ für eine Maß Bier. Dann kaufen Sie ein Kasten Bier bei Ihrem Getränkehändler, und legen 180€ auf den Tisch und sagen, stimmt so! Ich möchte diese Blicke nicht wirklich sehen... Das sind die Weinfeste eine gute Alternative, und immer noch günstiger.

i have never been there. In my hometown heilbronn we also have a huge Weinfest but its called Weindorf. No rides but just wine. Seeing the ride at 6:15 brings back very bad memories 🤢🤢🤮

But, it wasn't the Renaissance (that is an art epoch), it was the Early Modern Times Period when witch hunt got to its peak. But it started in Medieval Times.
