Crazy Giant Schnauzers

This is just a video of the normal life with two giants within your house. lol! Ice, (AKC/UKC Ch. CoolHand's Black Ice), is 15 months old here and still VERY much a puppy! She was WOUND! :) Haanz, (AKC GCh/UKC Ch. Skansen's Thousand Island CD RN) is very used to her insane behavior. He will let her get away with anything, its so funny. :) At least they love each other. :)

I am sorry for your loss. I agree, I have a Schnauzer named Charlie. He is my best friend. He recently got bit by an insect and has an infection in his foot so I have been nursing him and trying to keep him calm. It's hard because he is so full of life and love. Enjoy your Schnauzer. I love this. Our giant has so many of the hilarious traits. All you have to do is pat her on the butt or push her and she gets all silly. Except she is super vocal about it and growls and groans. We love our girl. She is just the best dog ever, and so playful.

Ashley Pruett can you tell me more about them? Are they easily trained? Or are they strong minded and rather do their own thing? I'm looking into various breeds. I have mostly owned Yorkies and German Shepherds in the past. I owned both until they were 15 years old. They passed away and after a year, I think I am ready for a new addition to the family. Doing my research. I also own a parrot. wondering if they are okay with other pets such as parrot and cat. Any info is appreciated.

Giant schnauzers are a lot of work. She's likely the best dog I've ever had, but she requires training and enforcement...otherwise she will take over the leadership role. They're incredibly intelligent, very obedient, and so very loving. But they need you to set the rules and always follow them. Also great watch dogs.

I have a 12 year old Giant Schnauzer that my two sons grew up with. My sons are now 23 and 18. Knight has been a wondeful family pet and my kids adore him. He has always been fine with all the multitude of friends that have paraded in and out of our house but always barks and gets a little agitated when peolpe leave. We got him from Bigfoot kennel in Pa. The breeder told us he was bred to be a pet and not show, although some of his siblings were show quality. Knight is probably a little sweeter than the typical description of Giants but has a firece bark and looks intimidating to some people.The thing about Giant Schnauzers that I have found difficult but sometimes funny too is that they NEvER want to be alone. They don't want to stay outside by themeselves like our German Shepherd that I grew up with did. They always want to be with thier "people". Yes they do smell to the person who asked this question. We live in the suburbs and when Knight goes in the stream and hasnt been to the groomer for a few months he stinks. So therefore you will have grooming expenses and since he is a dog and very much alive he may smell bad sometimes. All this being said enen though Knight is coming to the end of his lifespan and his back legs are giving him a lot of trouble I probably wouldnt have traded it for the world. He is the most loyal dog that love us all the time, has kept our house and our family safe and has provided my kids with endless fun and laughs.

Yeah, my giant gets a bath once a month at minimum and he doesn't smell. Aside from his beard smelling not so fresh, he's a really clean dog. You gotta stay on top of grooming and smell is not a thing.

I had a miniature schnauzer 14 years old male I called him buddy he was my best friend he protected me like nothing else, always slept with me had to know where I was always he got sick and he went down hill so fast having seizures so I had him euthanized it devastated me but I know it was best for him been gone a couple months

she was just like the playful one in this video...an absolute love, and LAP dog......They are a wonderful breed but you must be a very consistent owner as they are also very smart. You have to make sure that you are the alpha through consistent and diligent training. My favorite breed ever...so much personality. These owners have obviously done their job in minimizing their natural tendency to bark as well. Just takes patience and time

Giants, if bred by responsible and knowledgeable breeders are fabulous family dogs - loyal, smart, funny, easily trained, playful, and wonderful companions to adults and children alike. We've had 3 and they have all been gentle and tolerant of young children climbing and hugging them.

Miss my giant, Molly, the most intelligent dog I've ever owned and minature, Buddy, most sincere dog...he would stand on the bow of our sailboat and look into the wind, ears flopping, we always knew the direction of the wind. He would only cuddle when scared of big waves, boat heeling over, ran directly into my arms. RIP Molly & Buddy my fur children.

I've had 2 giants now separated by a Bouvier. They are clowns, very independent minded but velcro dogs. We made our mistakes with the first one who was very destructive. It's difficult to kennel them unless you have a lot of room. He slept with us as does this one, entirely different personalities, first was super Alpha, this one had entropy and was nearly blind when we rescued him, he has a different attitude and needed much more work. Still is reluctant to " come" command, We are fairly certain he was beaten in the home he was in, he needed a lot if work to trust again and he hated boys around age 11,-13 probably the source of some of his misery. Now he is beautiful. Unlike smaller schnauzers, these guys take a long time to grow into themselves. They don't finish growing until about 24-26 months. Mentally they are juvenile delinquents until about 5 then suddenly they are very perceptive, polite grown up gentlemen! It's an overnight miracle. The counter serfing tease becomes so much more reasonable.❤❤ They eat you out of house and home (24 mos.), in that time, then their diet becomes very modest, 1 cup of high quality food twice a day supplemented by about 1/2 cup of cooked beef or pork. And treats! They are very food driven and very smart about getting it, knowing where its stored and are expert counter and fridge surfers! I rarely feed chicken does a number on their digestive tract. They like either fruit or veg it seems, but not both. The first one ate peaches, apricots, cherries, nectarines, but not pears. He would condescend to eat an apple if there was nothing else. The Bouv. ate bananas and this one loves his veg. Carrots,broccoli,cauliflower, green beans ,squash, peas, bring it on with every meal and salad first, please, lettuce -romaine is favored. He was dog reactive when we got him and knew how you fight to win, now with a lot of work, time and a halti, he is good in off leash with everyone. The solution was his pack mate, a pekeinese/mini daschund cross with the heart of a lion and an old man face that fears nothing. If Celta approves, he's good to go. They happily run the free dog ravines here with no problem. Make no mistake tho, they are fearsome guard dogs and don't tolerate being messed with. The yard is their domain and heaven help the fool who ignores the gate signs. Our first taught a hard lesson to a friend who was in the habit of teasing his own small dogs. We were enjoying a warm evening outdoors while the dog patrolled and each time he passed by this guy grabbed a few hairs on his back. The first time he startled, the second time he warned and my husband said "don't bait the dog, you will be sorry". He repeated the action and was again warned. Growling only but as fools always will, the 4th round the dog wheeled on him and grabbed him by the forearm, very firmly, he broke no skin and had to be given the drop command but he made his point, there was a perfect bruise all the way around, not even a skin abrasion, which gives you a good idea of how much mouth control they have. They are quite capable of exerting 5500lb,/Sq in of pressure which will snap bones. They love to play rough which is why you watch them with smaller dogs, same size dogs hold their own and ours got his come uppance with a Newfie he played with when she was finally big enough to sit on him! Grooming is a big expense, made less if you are fortunate enough to get a hardcoated schnauzer, both of mine have been, they don't get quite as much leg furnishing, but conversely you are not picking burrs out of every Sq inch of them either. They are easier to keep clean and neat, their hair is dense and coarse on top soft undercoat, leg and chest hair is still soft but not so difficult to keep untangled.Our groomer has started to give him "socks" so his feet don't collect so much stuff in the underbrush. This one loves to swim everywhere. Our first avoided puddles and all water like the plague, except the groomers, they all love the groomers. Which brings up another expense. Grooming for this one is every 3 Mos with baths in between. Avg cost $70 for a bath and com out, Full cut $150. For this one Grooming around $1,400/yr with baths. The bouvier was soft she cost us around $2,200. With a cut every 6 wks and a bath and full comb out between. Vet bills are high due to size and recommend insurance so you can afford the things that happen. The First did a cruciate ligament that was $10,000. Along with various other emergencies and routine checks.$$$$. They are subject to thyroid condition and a few other quirks, but generally healthy. This one was immunocompromised when we rescued. He had numerous uti's , not insurable and his eyes fixed another $6,000. But as he's aged he's been easier. We look after their teeth with Leba3 a spray for tartar and at 10, he still has beautiful pearly whites. That was our vets suggestion since he didn't want to subject him to anesthetic for tooth cleaning.They are a job and a joy. They love unconditionally if you treat them well but if you abuse them they will bide there time and get even.. From everything I have read it suggests they'll make sure everything is broken when they finish with you. Love is the big plus with them and they are a joy. If I wasn't getting yo old for 2 big dogs my dream combo would be a Giant and a Bouvier , the giant for their exuberance and the bouv for their level headed common sense. Together you could have a pack of controlled chaos in the house, but it would require 2 king size beds!

They are gorgeous and obviously add so much to your life. I have a mini as I live in Japan and space is...tight! How are your giants at watchdog duties ? Do they bark at strangers ? My mini barks her head off even at those near the house. I would think a thief would have nothing to do with your home with 150 kg of schnauzer behind the door ? Do they growl and try to sound tough if they don't know the person on the other side of the door ? Thanks for the great video !!

The hips either will be a problem or wont be. Haanz is OFA 'Good' so no problems with him! Ice is too young to be x-rayed just yet, we will find out in September. As for the ACL, well... anything is possible. They slide around like that on the floors on purpose! Its actually pretty funny, they are VERY aware of what they are doing, hardly ever slip or fall without it being 100% intentional! :) That's half of why they are so funny!! Crazy giants, says it all!

They have thier moments!! LOL! They can be super nuts but they dont have that crazy screamy noise the minis make! They generally are very active dogs and need a good amount of excersize to keep them happy. They are super smart, which is good and annoying sometimes! LOL. :) I love them though, I dont know if I could have another breed after these guys, except a doberman, I will have one some day, and they are pretty similar temperaments.

Well, they are nothing at all like the minis!! Think more like Doberman type, guardian, big, and have a stubborn tendency. They are easy to train but need CONSTANT training as they love to have a job, and find training to be super fun! Lots of people have minis and giants, but just remember they aren't the same kind of dog in a different size, that's all. :) I don't think Ill ever NOT have a giant, I am hooked!

Once he was playing with me and hurt me( not bad tho😂) and immeaditly i fell causr he knocked me over and said ow. His ears went straight down and he army crawled towards me and licked my hand. Schnauzers generally are odorless. But that really depends on the owner's care and frequency of grooming too. I have a standard schnauzer and he's lovely. Smells like an angel all the time. I love him to bits.

I have only ONE schnauzer. My miniature schnauzer smells SOOOO FREAKING BAD. the smells goes away after I bath him, but it comes back slowly the next day. I do walk him out a lot, so maybe thats why he smells so much, cuz hormoes go crazy. idk how giant schnauzers are but miniature schnauzers do smell lol

@@alexsaurus12 I know this is an old comment, but if your dog smells really bad that's a big red flag. Could be an ear infection, a tooth / gum infection, anal gland problem... Etc. If odor is a thing get your dog groomed and ask your groomer for suggestions / take your dog to the vet. Bad smell is a bad sign. I'd be very concerned about health if my dog smelled bad out of the ordinary

Haanz came to me at 4 months old, his ears were pretty much standing by that point. I continued to tape till he was 6 months. Ice I had a problem with her ears, as one got infected real bad when she was young. She was allergic to all the tapes, so I had to re-tape every day. I never did get the one ear correct, I kept the one ear taped till she was about 8 months, the other one was fine after about 6 months.

We have two boston terriers, and we want a large dog to protect them from an intruder while are gone at work. Yours seem to get along with your boston. Do you think we could have the same luck if we get one?

I MIGHT also be getting a schnauzer, I already have a 9 year old erdeil terrior and you know how rare it is to own one of those! But schnauzers are actually very similar.

I’d have to ask if certain dogs that resemble the Giant Schnauzer would be great companions for it, like a Scottish terrier or a Newfoundland (both of which have generally black, long fur, and for the latter, a more peaceful, comforting personality to counter aggression.).
