I was coming back from Omaha Nebraska on a cold, sunny December day. The 727 hit the ground snow line at altitude. It dropped twice like a rock. The second time, I looked out the window and saw the wing flex up at least 10 feet. That certainly scared the Dickens out of me! I notice this simulator had lots of wing flexing in it. Never even thought about that until I saw it happen!
@cancelanime15075 жыл бұрын
Lucky to fly on the 727! I’m way to young to have ever been able to experience that!
@johnemerson13634 жыл бұрын
Watching the wings flex like they did, I think it was a bit exaggerated. I have been in BIG birds in nasty weather but I have never seen that much flex, at least not that quick and pronounced.
@whirlybird31894 жыл бұрын
Wings or airpower magazine had an article on the B-47 bomber. Had a photo of them bending the wing in a test. Unbelievable! When that airliner dropped like a chair pulled out from under you, plane goes down in the downdraft, wings went up immediately. How much at the wingtip? After that, everybody had to buckle up, stewardess service was cancelled. Flex was dependent on downdraft speed, if it was known. For an guy who is an aircraft buff, I have not been in a plane since that happened in late 1999. It's not about how often you fly. How far out is the wingtip? I would fly again, if I had a reason to. In those 2 seconds of drop, it scare the dickens out of you. You don't see it coming. You could see the snow line on the ground on a clear sunny day. Flight was from Omaha to Houston. Sitting on right side and looking out left side, wingtip was at least 60 foot from me. How tall does a person appear from that distance? Believe me, I experienced it! As an addendum, the B-47 was designed to endure 17 feet of wing deflection! Wow! Similar wings? Don't know, but, I did look it up. No engines or spoilers on a 727 wing.

I'm surprised you didn't rip the wings off of that plane! I like your re-enactments of real crashes, but I also enjoyed this video of you just flying the sim in challenging conditions.
@roykliffen96744 жыл бұрын
Love the detail of wing-flexing. I however do hope that in a next iteration of the sim it will be done a little more graduate. At times it looked more like the aircraft was flapping its wings in stead of flexing them. I have no problem with the amount of deflection; I've seen worse, just with the suddenness. It wasn't "organic" by lack of a better word.
@semicolon1013 жыл бұрын
probably a gust of 60knots+ making it flex that fast?

I was traveling from Houston (IAH) to Philadelphia (PHL) when a hurricane was working it's way up the coast. It was decided that Philadelphia was too risky so after circling Cincinnati for an hour we were dumped in Buffalo, NY. When we got into the terminal we were told by Continental that they do not control the weather, all hotels were full and "good luck". Not much fun, my daughter who was 18 months at the time had just had surgery while in Houston, was in a half body cast and was not in the best of moods. Nobody would rent a decent car for a one way trip(they wanted me to return the car to Buffalo )so I had to rent some old piece of junk and drive from Buffalo (Niagara Falls area) to Philadelphia. I should have stayed in Houston for another day, I did have open ended tickets that could be changed at no additional cost.
