I'm about your age, and for most of my life I've suffered from severe anxiety, depression and panic attacks, as a result of childhood trauma, so I relate to your story a lot. For about a decade, even leaving the house was a massive struggle for me, and I used to self medicate a lot with alcohol and anti-anxiety medication (benzos). After being completely addicted to benzos for five years, I finally hit rock bottom and decided to get help. Even though talking to people about my problems helped me feel a bit better in the short term, I was still carrying around all the trauma and emotional baggage from my childhood, and withdrawal symptoms from trying to come off the benzos made my anxiety and panic attacks ten times worse. Most of the therapy I received was pretty useless at actually getting to the root cause of the problem, but eventually I found a therapy approach called EFT (emotional freedom technique), which was an absolute game changer. After about ten sessions, 90% of my anxiety was gone, permanently, and I haven't had a panic attack in about four years. I still get a little bit of anxiety every now and then, which is normal, but it no longer completely dominates my whole life like it used to. Coming off the benzos was probably the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, but with the help of EFT I managed to do it. I'd highly recommend giving it a try. It literally saved my life.

20 mins into this, steve is so full of trauma its unbelievable to imagine how hard his life has been after the shit he was dealt at that school,i had an incident quite similar as a teen,i got invited to a guys house by my "mates" who drugged me and left,woke up with this guys mouth in a certain area,i jumped up and lamped him in the chops,he hit the deck and i ran,he was found dead 4 days later,i kept quiet for nearly 20 years and tried to forget about it but it started creeping back into my head a few years ago and i had to tell someone because it was eating away at me,trauma can be fucking crippling and empowering at the same time, steve ive got huge respect for you and dodge you are so compassionate and your interview technique is amazing 💪

How he’s feeling now I can totally relate to. The anxiety, depression, health anxiety I’ve got it all to. It’s the worst feeling ever. Felt this one more than any other interview. Takes courage to speak out but it does help with closure slowly. It’s the life you have lived which has put you where you are today. We all have a story to tell and hidden demons. Dodge, you properly handled matey who was going into a really bad set of memories, well done, and kudos to Steve for finding it in himself to speak out in a podcast about the abuse, Myself and some of my mates from the 80s went through similar things and it is only through discussing and sharing the pain of the shit we experienced in our formative years that we can move on and have positive relationships, I'm in my 50s now and living a good life , wife, kids and good people around me but it took me 25 years of carrying the pain as a secret before it all came out in a drug fuelled violent incident and ending up with me doing nearly every day of 5yrs in prison then meeting my to be wife when released to start working to change my life and not let my past dictate my future, fair play to Steve, and to you too Dodge, Yet another top notch podcast with interesting guest, I Wish him all the best and could be good to see how the book has impact on his life, Cheers

This guy is a good guy at heart. You can tell from listening. The shit this poor blokes been through as a kid change his path in life. He shouldn’t have had to go through all that and if he hadn’t he wouldn’t have turned into “crazy Steve “ . Makes me so angry hearing about all these stories of people in positions of power abusing kids and ruining their lives. It’s so unfair guys like this have to go through what he’s going through still to this day. Good on him for turning a corner and changing from the violence and trouble. should be proud he’s turned life around. Life’s precious and shouldn’t be thrown away . Dodge , Steve from the bottom of my heart thank you I needed to see this podcast me and Steve have a lot in common in the way of relationships and other things you both talked of I'm not by any means trying to say I'm on his level because I'm not it's just there is so many things that resonate with me I would chop my left nut of to sit down with this man and of corse you dodge and have a chat and wish I could somehow contact him I think he could Help me understand so mutch of what's locked up inside of me that kills me on a daily basis causing me panic attacks, anxiety and feeling dead inside and as a result I'm pushing away the people who mean more to me then anything on plannet earth ... I'm so happy for him knowing he has found the love he so much deserves and all I wish for him is the best in life .. also suffer from adhd and know how hard it can be to communicate and to be able to put things into words. I was sent to a boarding school in the mid seventies at the age of seven and a half and then sent into a children's home during school holidays until I was 16 then sent to young affenders prison when I was 18 for 6mths for violence

Another example of how a traumatic childhood can affect a persons entire life. This may sound odd,but learning that some of the worst murderers,rapists,gangsters etc had traumatic childhoods makes me so sad since it’s clearly the cause of their criminality,worse still they had no choice in taking that path of criminality I read somewhere that half of the prisoners in the USA had severe mental health problems(either due directly to their childhood or a psychiatric illness) and should really be treated as such rather than in prison,which as Steve points out,just worsens the persons condition. Steve does a great job of explaining this because as he points out nobody ‘really listen’ and actually help unless they’ve been through it themselves. Again,someone who now is an intelligent,well spoken,genuine,polite and caring person who at first look at you’d never think he was(another lesson this podcast teaches,never judge) This is one of the reasons I became a Paediatric Nurse as I felt children need a childhood with positive reinforcement(in particular teenagers). I worked in a Children’s hospice and people would always naturally say how sad that must be,my reply was always the same,yes it is however I found children in the kind of abusive,poor homes/environment’s far sadder since they have a life but it’s slowly being destroyed through no fault of their own. So again,Thank you Steve and Dodge. Steve you’ve helped more people than you’ll ever know with this podcast and your book,you’re a good man. ❤

My cousin attended the same boarding school, he’s late 40’s now so may of been at a later time than Steve. Might explain why he’s been in and out of prison for most of his adult life.

The best thing about it is that I don't think it's calculated behaviour by him. I think it just boils down to the fact that Dodge is just as much as a lad as his guests - he's on a level. You can tell by the way he carries himself that he's not some naïve journalist who hasn't got a clue. Thats why these interviews are so easy to watch. It's like listening to 2 pals having a chat down the pub

MASSIVE RESPECT for this good man. Expressing oneself vulnerably is the most courageous thing a person can do. You should be hugely proud of yourself for getting through the hell you went through, your resilience and your immense strength. Trauma is no joke. I know you said nothing will ever get rid of it but I’d strongly suggest looking into psychedelic therapy (I have done psilocybin therapy twice and it completely saved my life and unloaded all that heavy childhood trauma off my back. I can finally relax, sleep, feel joy and safety again). Regardless, thank you ❤

I honestly can't express enough what he says about anxiety and fear, as I've gone through the same from past experiences working as a doorman and being situations with people, it got to the point for me where i couldn't even get out of bed in my own house to go to the toilet I'd rather wet myself at the the age of 40 i was that frightened, people have no idea what that kind of fear is like, from years of using steriods, drinking and substance abuse it has been unbelievably difficult to get back to normal luckily I've been able to ans understand how to control it when it starts to come back, this is so refreshing to hear someone talk openly about it. The fact that he says there is no point in going to therapy as you know and understand what is causing the problem and the dreams and the constant thoughts about what happened means so much as all you can do is deal with it yourself and go through the motions when it comes back at certain times and I've learned to deal with that myself aswell. ❤

Great life story Dodge - every guest you have seems to have an ever more amazing story… Steve said there is nothing that can deal with mental health… Steve for what you have been through and come through the other side is a miracle in itself… You cried out to God from the depths of your soul and He answered you… despite what you have endured you could easily and understandably say there is no God… God saw your heart towards that homeless guy in what you did… you saw your wife’s heart in how she treated you in your hour of need…. God can heal your past wounds… and will if you seek Him with all your heart. I pray you will encounter Him and His healing in Jesus name ❤ God is Love
