Get ready for the Volksmarch in 2021. Spring Volksmarch is Scheduled for June 5th and 6th 2021. Fall Volksmarch is scheduled for September 26th 2021 both at Crazyhorse! Take advantage of both dates and the amazing experience to hike up the Crazy Horse Monument.

Two times per year the Crazy Horse Volksmarch takes place in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Crazy Horse Memorial teams up with the Black Hills Volkssports Association to put on the event at the Crazy Horse Monument.
Join me on the Crazy Horse Volksmarch 2020! The 10k or 6.2 mile hike passes through rugged trail (only hiked 2 times per year) and service roads to reach the arm of the Crazy Horse Monument. You walk across the top of statue's arm and can get close enough to touch the face of the Crazy Horse Monument. You can spend as much time on the Crazy Horse Monument as needed and can take pictures of the surrounding Black Hills in South Dakota and Wyoming!
If you are planning to participate in the Hike to Crazy Horse, each person should bring 3 canned food items and has to pay $3 to participate. The hike is strenuous as you climb the mountain, so I recommend one or two trekking poles. It is required that you start your Volksmarch between 8am and 1pm. You can arrive early to wait in line to register. You must finish the hike by 4pm.

Thanks for the memories. I first saw Crazy Horse in 1965 when I was only five years old. Back than all you saw was some scaffolding on top of a mountain. Than when I was in the Air Force I was able to hike the mountain several times between 1986 and 1991. Unfortunately I had to take a 20 pound camcorder with me instead of the light weight camera you had😉 but it was worth it I was able to watch the face of Crazy Horse being completed! From 1991 to now they have made lots of progress on the arm. Many people think the progress on the mountain is too slow but when you compare the original mountain to where they are now you realize how much rock that had to be removed just so they can get to the point where the final carving could actually start! For a size comparison Mount Rushmore carving would fit inside Crazy Horse’s head. Mount Rushmore was built with government funding (but it was never finished to the original design), Crazy Horse is being built with only private donations and it’s the worlds largest carving! The next several years will be exciting as more and more of the finished carving emerge from the mountain.

My Uncle Ray Hiatt filmed this project in 1949 when they were first starting. Back then we failed to make copies of the filming...wish we did. Thanks !

Great! I walked the Volks march in 2018 when there was mist and clouds so we didn't have the spectaculare view. Buy...I've been there! I started around ten, when the most people here already started. It was a geest experience! Greetings from the Netherlands
