Got the Stealth 6 and 7 hybrids to replace my 5 and 6 irons due to gapping. Love the height and sound of the Stealths and they quickly became two of my favorites in the bag. 100% agreement on the idea of really hard to testi them. I generally play a stiff shaft and the only club I was able to test was the 5 hybrid in a senior flex. I had to mathematically work back the distance is to determine the 6 and 7 hybrid to get the gapping I needed. Since I play the Sim2 Max fairways. I felt confident in the stock shaft and stiff flex since that is what my fairway woods are. Wish the manufacturers had more of the higher lofted fairways and hybrid for golfers to test. I am also playing a 7W and 9 W and these have dramatically lowered my handicap.

I agree totally with you, Andy. Go with the 25 degree hybrid. I had the opportunity to try the Stealth 25 degree at my range this afternoon. TaylorMade actually calls it a Rescue club, not a Hybrid. It came with a stock Fujikura Ventus Red shaft in A (senior) flex, 56 grams, 3.4 torque, high launch and spin. I would like to try the regular flex, but for the initial test run this was okay and in fact the Ventus A flex feels like many regular flex shafts and is not whippy. Wow. When I made a good swing, meaning with correct timing and sequence of body movement, not letting the arms overtake the lower body, making a full turn on the backswing, etc, etc, it flew like a giant 9 iron to a green 173 yards away. Strikes toward the toe or heel still produced reasonable distance. As my irons are forged blades, thin with weak lofts, my 4-iron would be the 24 degree iron to compare it with rather than my 5 iron. At age 80, I generally use my 4-iron for 165 yard carry shots. Oh, I might get 170 on a perfect strike, and less than perfect hits can be less than 165. I can get pretty good height on a perfect strike, but it is harder than with the Rescue. So the 25 degree Stealth Rescue won hands down and would be a better club for me, not only longer but also much more likely to stop on the green. And with my average drive being 225-240 yards, I have to use a long iron or hybrid for approach shots on par 4s of 390 to 415 yards. The only thing that would hold me back is the price, $280 US. Golf clubs are just too damn expensive.

GI irons are ok off the tee. They go a long way compared to a bladed club. he problem with them is they are strong lofted and that kills spin. As you noticed, the 2nd ball you hit with iron laded on the front center and rolled all the way to the back of green if not off. If you use a 6 stealth you would be closer matched to the 5 iron. A 6 will hold the green like a pitching wedge. You can never go pin hunting with that iron. You have land it way short and let it run up to the pin.

I've found that almost all hybrids go about 210 yards for me between 19-25 degrees when I'm hitting them off the deck. I bought my father a 31 degree 7 hybrid for christmas and it has changed his entire game. I use a 17 degree hybrid as my main tee off club that isn't driver, and a 22 degree for my longest off the deck club. I can smash a long iron off the tee but struggle on any other lie. Love what hybrids bring to the table for average golfers
@bradfordcotta59252 жыл бұрын
11 yards sounds right. Remember, the 5 hybrid doesn't replace the 5 iron, it replaces a the 4 iron. The rule of thumb is 3-4 degrees less loft on a hybrid will travel the same distance as the standard loft on an iron. So, your 25 degree hybrid should travel a similar distance (all other things being equal) than an iron with 21 degrees of loft (which, in your 525 irons, would be a 4-iron). It is due to the CG, the mass of the head, and the length of the shaft. So, having a 5-iron and a 5 hybrid in the bag is NOT redundant...having a 4-iron and a 5 hybrid would be redundant.

Very interesting especially for an average senior like me. If you don't mind, I would like to know a couple of additional details. First, what shaft were you using on each of these clubs, and were they stiff or regular flex? Second, what was your clubhead speed so we can compare with ours? Third, what balls are you using? Swing speed can make a significant difference in which club a given player prefers. I have seen a comparison video of a 4 iron versus utility club versus 7 wood by a tester with a plus handicap in which he showed that players like him with high swing speeds can get the same distance with a long iron as with a utility club and may get tighter dispersion with the iron. Some highly skilled players simply don't like utility clubs and prefer long irons. But the same video demonstrated clearly that at more modest, average swing speeds, the utility club outperformed the 4 iron, and in fact the 7 wood did better than both.
@chrishartney2 жыл бұрын
Your 5 iron is the same loft as my 4 iron, which I swapped out for an old Taylormade 4 (21 degrees) hybrid that friend gave me. Maybe I should swap my 5 iron (27 degrees) for a 5 hybrid, but that might create to much of a gap between my 6 iron and the 5 hybrid. it's already a bit of a problem between my 5 iron and the 4 hybrid, but the hybrid is very adaptable, so I can hit softer shots with it. Your results with the 5 hybrid are brilliant for height and landing angle, but can the 5 hybrid punch a low shot to keep the ball under the wind?

My longest iron is a 5 iron, then I've got a 7 wood and a 5 wood. I can't figure out where a hybrid would fit in the bag, so I don't have one for now. The 5 iron is my least consistent club in terms of striking the ball, so I might end up swapping out the 5 iron for a 5 hybrid.

I've added 3,4 and 5 hybrids to my bag this year and its totally transformed my long game, my 5 hybrid doesn't achieve your numbers but I'm quite happy with its 160yard carry, its easy to get airborne from the fairway and certainly for me dispersion is much much better than with a 5 iron

The way I think about this problem is 1st answering what is the longest Par 3 you 'mostly' play, not ever play - but mostly. On that occasion, you get to tee up the ball, and playing an iron shot is NOT usually a problem. My guess, for most Average Golfers, is that a 25-24-degree 'last' iron should be in the bag for that shot - if you are older and slower, it's likely 28-27-degrees. Your next hybrid/wood should be 1-2 degrees stronger, which can also cover this distance - but also give you 10-more-yards when you need it.

Great content as usual Andy but the way I see it for your swing wouldn’t that 5h really be a 4i replacement? You would end up with a 20-ish yd gap from 6i to 5h if you replaced your 5i with that 5h. That’s not really desirable.
@davidl12722 жыл бұрын
I agree. This is not really a 5i replacement as it is an education that the similar loft hybrid to your longest iron is your next longest iron replacement. You'll not get that height ever out of a 4i with amateur swing speeds. 15 yd gap is then perfect to your 5i and an excellent par 3 club!

Good Ball striking day. 5 Stealth hybrid height and distance was strong. Can you compare to other brand same lofted hybrids?
@francoisdesmoulins-lebeaul42732 жыл бұрын
Hybrids tend to have longer shafts for the same loft compared to irons (and be shorter than corresponding fairway woods), therefore they tend to go a bit further and a bit higher. Now if your long irons don't go high enough, hybrids may help. If hybrids still don't go high enough, a lofted wood (7, 9 or even 11 wood!) could help. That, however, depends very much on the player, his/her speed, and delivery. In my personal case, pros and youtubers had me convinced before any true fitting that a 4 hybrid or even a 5 hybrid were the way... Well, after a proper fit and more experience I now know that I'm better off with a 4i than a 4h (accuracy, spin and keeping the ball reasonable far from most geostationary satellites ;) ). I'm still carrying a 3 hybrid... that happens to be the club I use the least and trust the least. Only when I'm 230 yards away from a green that I need to attack will I play it... so really not often.
@christianvachon22352 жыл бұрын
Hybrid vs long irons. I think that there is two things for this. First, modern lofts are SO much stronger than in the past, it's ridiculous. You have 29.5 degree 7 irons now! (traditionally it was 34 degrees). So, for most people, I can see the hybrid benefit definitely for most golfers. The other club that I find that many players would benefit from is a 7 wood. VERY popular now and in the bag of many of the top tour players. For example, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, Bubba Watson, Max Homa, Louis Oosthuizen, Ian Poulter and Tyrrell Hatton all have a 7 wood in the bag at the moment. P.S. I still play traditional lofts, but I have an ANCIENT fairway/trouble hybrid that is 21 degrees and half-way between a 7 wood and hybrid which is still one of my favorite clubs in the bag.

For higher-speed players who a) want to follow Andy’s thought process and replace longer irons with hybrids, b) a heavier, somewhat lower-launching shaft and c) don’t want the terrible feel of the RDX Black that so many other brands are throwing in their hybrids, that 95TX Rogue Black and the ability to move into a flat hosel setting makes the G425 a really compelling option.

Enjoy your show, but, in my opinion, too much of a club salesman. The average golfer is not wealthy, and needs more help with lessons, sadly wanting in your series.
