The truly funny thing about the Barb's taking out the train was that her commander should not have been given that tour. The American Navy had a rule that sub commanders were only supposed to do three combat patrols. However, this commander was "Lucky Fluckey," who had won the Medal of Honor, and he wanted a fourth patrol... so they gave it to him.

Another funny thing: the rocket launcher they mounted aboard Barb was the only one of its kind left on Hawaii, and it was supposed to be used for testing purposes. I can’t remember exactly how Fluckey managed to commandeer it. Guess I need to reread the book.

The best detail about the Campbeltown's raid on St. Nazaire was that the timed fuzes for the explosives clearly had a sense of comic timing... When the initial activity had died down, the captured commander of the Campbeltown was being interrogated by a German naval officer. As the officer was gloating about how "foolish" the British had been and how easy it would be to repair the damage caused by the raid, at that exact moment the explosives chose to detonate, obliterating the dock and a good number of German personnel with it. The commander reportedly quipped "We're not quite as foolish as you think!".

Immediately after the Campbeltown exploded a German NCO burst into a room full of captured commandos screaming that he was going to shoot them all. One captured commando replied to him, “if you’re going to do so just get on with it, but please stop shouting, I have such a headache.”

Or the tale of Luigi Torrelli being one of the only ships to server under all 3 major axis nations navies during ww2 ending the war with a mixed crew of Italians, Germans, and Japanese sailors, allegedly even firing the last shots of the war at sea when she opened fire on a US PBY-5 Catalina hours before the treaty was signed.

Navy Veteran here (Greenside corpsman with a😭5th ANGLICO) but I need to see the “USS Wisconsin” the “Temper, Temper”….everyone knows that after they were hit by one of the only land launched Torpedo I have ever heard of, they returned the entire section of that pier into the base elements from the periodic table causing the another ship to pull up minutes later saying “Temper, Temper”but, do people know why no one said “maybe not every gun?” Because the well loved XO (the only time that’s been combined) rested inside of his sleeping quarters, the torpedo didn’t kill anyone but it did hit one Area….waste water treatment area that forced up all of the…human waste up to the only open valve on the ship at the time (then you had to press a button to fill the toilet) and basically hit the XO with a stream of shit comparable to a firefighters hose. (Three minutes later) “The door to the deck opens and the XO stands, covered head to toe in shit: I want every single gun pointed at those motherfuckers.”

The main intended target weren't aircraft carriers though but battleships. 8 of those were present, out of which 4 were damaged and 4 actually sunk (even if 2 got raised and repaired later). Too bad for the Japanese it was basically already the end of the age of battleship dominance, but they didn't know it at the time, so the targets stated in the objectives were what they were.

So, there are a few things that you didn't mention about the St. Nazaire raid that I think are worth mentioning that are all absolutely bonkers. * The first being that the _Campbeltown_ wasn't alone, but was actually part of a flotilla of 21 other ships, including sixteen motor launches, one motor torpedo boat, and a motor gun boat acting as the headquarters craft. This flotilla of madlads got within a little over 1 nautical mile into port by pretending to be Kreigsmarine vessels before they were fired upon. At this point, the skeleton crew of 75 aboard the _Campbeltown_ dropped the flag of the Kreigsmarine and brought up the fighting ensign of the Royal Navy as she steamed into port. * The charges aboard the _Campbeltown_ - about 4 tons of explosives salvaged from several torpedoes - were time delayed. While the raid was conducted in the early morning hours, the charges were intended to go off later around 9 am. However, they failed to detonate after over an hour. By this point the Nazis had assumed it was a failed attempt at a more conventional raid as they had failed to find the explosives. The Germans were rather relaxed about it, and there are even photos from the Germans of the _Campbeltown_ post-ramming. The mood was much less jovial on their side when the charges finally went off an hour and thirty minutes behind schedule, obliterating half the ship, much of the dockyard, and over two hundred Germans, several of which were inspecting the ship when it went off. * _Campbeltown_ was not the only vessel to do damage. The motor torpedo boat accompanying her fired a delayed detonation torpedo that struck the outer lock gate to the dock's submarine basin. Two days after the explosion, the torpedo, as scheduled, detonated late on the night of the 30th. Although the damage in terms of material was minimal, it was a psychological nuke. The Germans flew into such a panic, thinking another raid was afoot that they started spraying the dockyard and nearby town with gunfire, shooting not only at French civilians, but at each other. Convinced it was the work of sabotage, the Germans rounded up and imprisoned the 1,500 residents of that nearby town to a camp they established and demolished most of the houses, never learning the truth during the course of the war. * The damage done by the _Campbeltown_ explosion was so severe that the dockyard wouldn't be fully repaired until 1948, a full six years after the raid.

Honestly, as absolutely bonkers the Doolittle raid is, I don't think enough people talk about what happened in the aftermath. Japan killed, per Chiang Kai-Shek, 250,000 civilians over the following month in retribution. Even if this number is a slight exaggeration (a notion I would be inclined to disagree with), there's no denying the atrocities committed as reprisals by the Japanese following the raid. I'm not bringing this up to make any particular point; honestly, the video was super entertaining, and bringing this would have been so tonally different from everything else. But I think it's an important part of the story for understanding the broader implications of the raid. Yes, it did have the (admittedly somewhat slight) strategic benefit of scaring the Japanese populace, raising American morale, and temporarily forcing Japan to reconsider US capabilities, and yes, it's really fuckin cool. But the death of 50 Japanese was used to justify the killing of thousands of Chinese civilians in the search for the pilots, motivated the mass killings of civilians, and further fanned the flames of nationalism that fueled some of the grossest crimes against humanity. It also put strain on US-Chinese relations that prevented more "Doolittle Raid-esque" shenanigans in the future, but also notably damaged the Ryuho and was a driving force behind Yamato receiving official support to attack Midway. The Doolittle Raid, like most historical events, is quite multi-facetted, and while the aftermath of the raid isn't particularly world altering for most people (the Japanese committed war crimes? Who could have forseen this), it's still important part of the story that is too often left out.
@Edax_Royeaux

@@Edax_Royeaux I mean somewhat? Perhaps I was too harsh in my depiction and I should have provided sources to back it up. While it is true that Chiang expressed his support of the raid in correspondence with US leaders, most notably in a message to Sec. Morgenthau that he requested be made public¹ and that he invited the airmen of the Doolittle Raid to Chongqing to dine with him before their escape into India², that is not to say that he was fully happy with the results of the raid. In communications between himself, then-Lieutenant General Joseph Stilwell, and President Roosevelt, he expressed annoyance at not being more informed about the specifics of the raid and objected to it³. Historian Barbara Tuchman in her book "Stilwell and the American Experience in China (1911-1945)" writes, "He objected strenuously, fearing loss of certain airfields in Chekiang through enemy action. He was informed, however, that the mission was too far advanced for cancellation. The episode did not help to persuade him that China was being treated as an equal much less a great power," (Tuchman 1981, 444). Perhaps a better characterization of the strain that resulted is not that the US and China were on worse terms but rather that the raid led to tension between the leaders of the respective countries. The failure to hold vital infrastructure during the subsequent Japanese rampage was viewed by Chiang as an almost inevitable consequence whilst Stilwell saw it more the result of, to quote a report given to him, ". . . [a] bitched-up action." (Tuchman 484). It would be at this point that I would love to cite one of the numerous sections in Stilwell's journals where he disparages Chiang and his admittedly quite detrimental political maneuvers, though I don't presently have access to it, but suffice to say that the relationship between the Generalissimo and Stilwell was rather adversarial⁵. This coexisted with a simultaneous general annoyance with the way Chiang was conducting the war amongst US generals⁶ and an increased paranoia in Chiang that the raid would increase dissent against him⁷. This culminated in an atmosphere that I think would be fairly characterized as suspicious and somewhat tense, as though the raid and subsequent atrocities committed served to rally a dejected US and galvanize their resolve against a brutal regime (thus being successful in the aims set out by its planners), it also increased mistrust between the nations' leaders led to the loss of a quarter million lives and strategically significant territory in retribution. So yes, while there were genuine tangible benefits resulting from the raid, it would be, in my estimation, incorrect to assert that there were no long-term ill effects suffered as a result of the raid. Perhaps my characterization of exactly how relations worsened as a result of the raid (at bare minimum, i was not sufficiently specific with my description, sorry about that) but I do think it is evident that the raid was not as universally loved or mutualist in character as it is often portrayed. 1. @@AnonToast Stilwell was perhaps one of the worse Generals in the American Army, being the fatal combination of undiplomatic, caustic and a failure of a tactician. Stilwell bickered with the British Field Marshal Alan Brooke (whom called Sitwell a "hopeless crank with no vision"), the Chinese leadership, even US General Claire Lee Chennault who was helping in China. Chiang rightly called for his dismissal. Had Stilwell not been so easily defeated in the field of battle, I might have been able to take him more seriously, but it seems in all major fields Stilwell failed as a leader. His inability to work with others, lead men into victory, or even work with allies showed he had no business being a general. At least Patton had the capacity to win victories and be charming. Even if Stilwell was correct in identifying flaws in Chiang and his army, by opening insulting Chiang repeatedly, what did he achieve? Nothing positive. And Chiang was his host. And when Stilwell took command of Chinese troops in an ill-conceived campaign and blundered, he scapegoated the Chinese for his mistakes. That taints the veracity of Stilwell's opinions.

You should have gone over the USS Nevada, it EARNED the title unsinkable. Hit in pearl harbor? Tis a scratch. Hit by 2 nukes post war? Unfazed. Week of naval bombardment from multiple ships, including Iowa class battleships? It's just a flesh wound.

Loved the video @Animarchy History! Can't wait for the next video man! Not gonna lie, I'm already thinking about how the Girls of Azur Lane would react if they saw this! Also, Is there an Iron Blood Flag available on the Shop so that Tirpitz can Represent Azur Lane with Cleveland Next Time? Also, Thoughts on the Following Additions to Azur Lane of Late... • Yorktown and Hornet's Essex-class (Type 2) Riggings. • Langley's Independence-class (Type 2) Rigging. • Hammann's Edsall-class (Type 2) Rigging. • HMS Implacable (The Naughty Nun who looks Like Glynda Goodwitch from "RWBY" in her "Shepherd of the 'Lost'" Outfit). • HMS Scylla (Royal Navy's Answer to Iron Blood's Peter Strasser and "Date A Live's" Kurumi Tokisaka). • Ting An (aka Akuma Nihume in Azur Lane). • Valerian Kubishev (aka Nazuna from VShojo in Azur Lane). As for American Battleships "Loving their Second Amendment rights" when it comes to AA..... Check out the Greater Idaho Movement and Keep in mind that the Population of each State determines how many Seats in Congress each State has. As for the North American B-25 Mitchell Medium Bomber, they can Bring on the Pain Train especially when attacking Convoys in the Pacific. Between the B-25J's and their Skip Bombing 500lb Bombs and the B-25H's doing that along with firing the M4 75 millimeter/40 Caliber Cannon they are the Grandfather of the Lockheed AC-130 Gunship. Between them and the Douglas A-20C and A-20G Havoc Medium Bombers, You've got a Decent Platform for Attacking Enemy Convoys.

A group I am part of through a huge overnight rave on the hornet. We transformed about half of the ship into multiple sound stages, & rented the 3 axis airplane simulator for use during the party, and generally had a blast. Since then, I think a couple of other parties have been thrown on the hornet as well. Good folks to work with. It is federal land however, and that did cause some of our organizers pause not only for the rave related substances, but also, in addition to our huge 2000 person party that ran until dawn, a troop of boy scouts was doing an overnight stay in the bow of the ship. Apparently the ship is so big that we could be having a huge multi-level rave on one end and the boy scouts could sleep peacefully on the other

Check out one ship that has been greatly under appreciated. USS Wichita. She was all over the world, briefly was a flagship after Washington's admiral got swept off ship, was inspected by the King of England, dodged Jean Bart's fire, took a ijn torpedo that turned out to be a dud, and was at nearly every point of the Pacific at one point or another. And one of the two times I can think of where a surface ship blasted away a carrier. Wicked Witch of the West.
