I can't believe you didn't use the Solidago to slice up a pizza. It reminds me of the swords used during OT times that were made for hacking versus stabbing. Obviously, it is a very useful tool to have in your arsenal.

Thanks for this, Aaron. Cool blade, and great back story to it. If you haven't already, I recommend checking out the Condor Polar North. It's thinner than this, and lighter, so may not be as efficient for batoning. But it has the same kind of versatility you noted about the Solidago - great chopping and crafting, as well as fine carving - because of a generous choil, a multi-position handle, a convex edge, and an astonishing balance. Comes with the typical excellent Condor leather sheath set up. Even though I have a lot of other big blades and machetes, 9 times out of 10, it's what ends up on my hip.

Great machete! Reminds me of my Condor Amalgam. Just sized down and ordered the Skarma 240. I cant wait to throw it in my pack and give it a go. 😁

Yeah looks good. I don't have the Solidago Machete, but, I do have the Becker BK9 and the Condor Village Parang and use them a lot. Now the Village Parang is a good all around big blade and when paired with the Bushlore makes for a nice package.

I love the Houghton Era designed Brush Wolf sold by Tops (it’s like a smaller version of the Solidago). I also have their Kermit small fixed blade (named after their grandfather) sold on their website. Have communicated with Aaron Morgan of Houghton Era via email quite a bit & he is a top shelf individual.

Bro, I like it! I’ve been using a Condor Village Parang for several years, although I had to make a micarta handle for it because I broke the original walnut handle within a few weeks of owning it. It’s very hard to find 3/4” thick slabs of micarta, but the flare at the pummel requires it. I do like it much better than the wood anyway. Still, I’d be interested in trying the Solidago. It looks like it would work very well for me.

Interesting knife. I went ahead and ordered one from the Houghton Era website. The first knife I'm going to do a head-to-head comparison with this is my 1990 purchase of the original Becker Knife and Tool Machax. I have one of the original bare-blade Cincinnati made Machax knives, and I am interested to see how they'll do in a competition.

Yeah, I wish we could bring costs down, but it's difficult. When we got into designing and making knives, one of our goals was to keep prices very reasonable for people. This is in part because there were a lot of cool companies and designs, but I couldn't afford much of it. So this is definitely one of our aims with Houghton Era, great tools with good prices.

G'day Aaron, a good machete is, ...... a proper !!! outdoor/survival tool IMO. I do gravitate to Parangs, so this one is particularly interesting. Dig the history too !!! Even though I'm a stainless lover, I reckon 1095 or even 1075, (Condor), and such are great for the big fellas. Btw; excellent point Re; draw knife !!!!!!!!!!! To be honest, I am think'n this one is maybe a bit too light/thin for the Aussie bush, chopping and batoning, though, being more nimble, it would offer extra benefit in tropical/sub tropical rainforest, we have every climate here ; ) I do very much appreciate the leather sheath in terms of craftsmanship and in keeping with the history, though in practice, a lighter material would be better for the application IMO. Anyway, always fantastic to see the big blokes mate !!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers Duke.

Hey whats up im aaron one of the designers. I would love to see it perform in the aussie bush. It thrives here in Florida with all the oak. I've chopped entire oak trees down in testing. The sheath we wanted classic because of the backstory and history. We did just veg-tanned leather oiled so that it would get beat up, patina'ed and dirty. It's the michigan working man's machete. Throw it in your truck and go. Aaron "gideon "said in the video that we didn't really design it to be belt carried. However some guys will want to so that's the only reason why we even put a belt loop on it. Would love to be sending one out to ya!!!

@@houghton.era.outdoors G'day Aaron, thanks for the reply mate. I do remember seeing you on Aaron's previous vids, hope you've managed to dodge or cope with the nasty weather events in recent times over there. If you put kydex on it, I'd probably argue for leather, ..... more in keeping with the history ; ) Though, I am one that'd most likely keep it on the hip, in cross draw, to blaze a trail if need be, besides I reckon they feel like less overall carry weight on the belt rather than in a pack ; ) I am a keen woodworker, though up front, I'm not experienced with oak, not much of it here, except in folks home gardens or specialist timber suppliers. What I have done, is test every fixed blade I have, through redgum (old fence posts and railway sleepers), both with and across the grain, it aint quite the hardest on the planet, but an ideal benchmark for anything else I'm likely to encounter. Ok, you got me, I'll put in an order next payday, in a f/n, ...... hope they're not all gone by then I have moved house recently, so I'm out of redgum testing material, though I plan to do some landscaping in the very near future, which will undoubtedly provide more off cuts to mess around with, between those and what else I can find locally, I'd be happy to provide you honest feedback. Cheers Duke.

Thanks for the feedback and support always appreciate it! I know Aaron and Horacio (sheath designer, who rigged his up cross draw) did a ton of the initial testing of prototypes on a bunch of fallen trees from one of the hurricanes! It's pretty burley! It'd be great to see some action in aussie if you pull the trigger, but either way, keep in touch!

@@NathMorgan-ft6zq G'day Nate, thank you too for the reply mate. I reckon many like myself really appreciate comments straight from designers/manufacturers + it often sheds more light on design decisions. Only took me a coupla decades to work out cross/sword draw makes more sense for the big fellas, ......especially with a pack on ; ) Cheers Duke.

I hope your backpacking in Florida was in February or so. I'm a 7th generation Floridian and I won't even backpack 6+ months out of the year due to the miserable heat and humidity. Side note - Their website sucks. No specs or anything, just a short paragraph and a buy me. While I still prefer the kukri for many tasks, this machete would actually be great for the overgrowth on my property where the bush hook won't work.

I like it.. I dig the weird shaped machetes. Knives tend to work better when they're simple and have their certain features amplified via ingenuity and quality. But machetes are dope when they're shaped like an Aladdin sword... They function surprisingly well when they're shaped like a chimera designed it..
