CRAZY PLANE ENGINE REBUILD (Lycoming IO-540 Tear down) MORE HORSEPOWER. Episode 1 engine rebuild

In this video we strip down the Lycoming TIO-540 engine out of my Glasair 3 project. Hayden from HP Engines teaches me how to strip down the motor and how we plan to make more Horse Power. Luckily enough my plane is Experimental so we can hot the engine up with experimental pistons etc allowing the motor to produce more power. We will also do a second Episode of rebuilding the motor with all the new fancy parts. The second episode will show why this will be an awesome engine.

I love the video, thanks a lot. Although I've got small comment: all the short music intermissions are a bit bothering, especially since they are so much louder than the dialogs. I love the video quality and camera work though. It was really nice to see 540 from the inside :)

You are better off with a bmw M54 or even a Barra engine. Those Lycomings are dinosaurs are poorly designed.

Do you have any specifics on why they are poorly designed or have a source for ur info? What problems do they have?

@ronn4061 That's a long answer. Sources are air crash data, forums, documentation and my observation. Issues are well documented, many of which are on KZbin. These engines are an old design that is obsolete by modern standards. Issues incurred are cranks breaking, valves dropping, valve seat and guide wear, overheating, connecting rods and pistons disconnecting from cranks, magnetos failing, cam shafts failing, cracks in casting, poor fuel economy. The Issues are much more detailed than explained. I would have to write an essay regarding the engines. Basically, by design they are under more stress than a modern engine, they are still produced because people still by them.
