nice job you are right if you are going to saw for a living you need a good high end mill like your's you can't be sawing if you are moving log's and lumber by hand. the log desides what it's going to be and a good saw miller like you can get the most out of it. take care, be safe and well

Rob, Pretty wood. I am a fan of Rainbow Poplar, now to wait for the end result. BTW Your dust hose is almost disconnected at the mill. Doug B
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama2 жыл бұрын
Good catch! You win the prize, you were the only person to notice and comment on the hose coming off! The good news was that the dust collector was is strong that it was able to suck the sawdust across the air gap, and I didn't want to stop in the middle of the log to fix the hose. So I just kept on keeping on until I finished the log.

nice work. Like i tell everyone, you wont know what is in the log until you open it up and see. I have an LT15Wide and love it (except the back breaking part of rolling the logs). My next thing coming is a kiln, but hay season is quickly getting here. Love the work and great to see another person salvaging something that could have ended up in the stove

I wish I had a video of it, but I had an LT15 years ago, and was able to build a log roller on it very similar to the claw turner used on the LT40. I used a small electric winch to drive the claw and it would rotate very big logs.

As a hobbyist, I am about to start sawing into a lightning struck Oak tree hit 3 years ago and cut down this past Fall. I'm excited. I wanted to save this one in my yard but I guess someone else had other plans. It was a strong tree about 28" or better prior. But it blew the side out and could not recover.

How offen is a log like this one is found. iz the price doubled over a normal boards. love all the colors hidden in this log.

These are pretty rare, but I base all my prices on the cost of the logs, not the beauty.

Great video. Does the portion of the wood that was hit/damaged by lightning affect the cutting process, i.e. is it more dense, etc. affecting the sawing?

Needed a 24ft 8x14 beam, it was clean on the outside nice log and 25 ft long, got it squared up and at the 10x 16 i found a lighting strike, salvaged a 6ft piece 4x6 bummer

Would you do a video fully-explaining your vertical-cut technique? I think it would be interesting for us sawyers to see. I've never heard anyone mention it before. Keep up the great vids!
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama2 жыл бұрын
Great suggestion! I'll give a detailed explanation in the near future. However, as I make the videos of our everyday sawing, you might notice me doing it quite a bit, as well as the half log RRQS quartersawing technique. I've modified each method to be able to switch seamlessly between them, as the log or cant dictates. One of the great advantageous of vertical grain sawing is that it puts the fiber stress of the board in the slip plane instead of the face plane so produces flatter lumber for highly stressed species such as hickory, pecan, walnut, etc. Thanks for watching.
@brennerheavy2 жыл бұрын
@@HobbyHardwoodAlabama I'm looking forward too it because we tend to have problems up here with rock maple twisting pretty badly, and I'm looking for ways to eliminate that loss over the drying process👍👍👍

I have some of your Rainbow poplar that my wife is making into tables. My question is can you tell if a poplar will have the rainbow before it is cut? I have a large number of moderate to large poplar trees on my place and would love to selectively cut any with possible rain owing inside.
@robertmurphy55732 жыл бұрын
Rain bowing
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama2 жыл бұрын
No, there's really no way to tell before hand before they are cut, however, since they are formed by growing over mineral deposits, the rainbow effect will color several trees in close proximity. They like to travel in schools. Find one, there will be more, however, they are exceedingly rare.
@andycobbcobbbroslogging71252 жыл бұрын
you may have to give yo get. Losing a cut to gain on the log is smart. May lise a few less board ft , but make more $$. Vertical sawing can help u get that stress out and get a flat cut if the log is positioned correct. Flat boards - more $$. AC
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama2 жыл бұрын
Yep, the Sawyer must have an eye on the end goal, and be flexible with the sawing technique.
@Islandwaterjet2 жыл бұрын
The 4 fingers hanging down in the front clearly are to drag the cut board back with the powerfeed. I also see there is hook at the bottom to stop the board from falling off. But still have not figured out the back dangley bits purpose.
@RutherfordConLLC2 жыл бұрын
They help keep the piece being pulled back inline with the log vs randomly going off at an angle and falling off the side before it gets to the table.
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama2 жыл бұрын
That is correct. They trap and steer the board, and keep it coming back straight. The little hooks on the bottom are my own invention, and really bring the drawback to life. Here is a video I did on them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYutlaF_pNmiesk
