That is an amazing piece of equipment. When I was a kid in school, they bought wood from Paxton in KC, and they double sided the hardwood the school bought, and it was crooked, bowed, wavy crap. Building a project in wood shop was experience, the project was junk. Now I have a 12" jointer and a 15" planer, in order to make my boards flat.

I don't remember the name of the powder form of the additive we used to increase the cutting ability of metal cutting tools. We just poured it on the reamer bits while they were turning to keep them damp. I believe it was a fine powder graphite mixed with water. Surely companies that sell machinist products should have it. I was about 19 years of age then and I'm about to turn 76 and still work everyday except Sunday. So it's been a day or to since I used it. I don't think it would be harmful to the belts or other parts of the mill. Grainger may have some suggestions on it's name and availability. Thanks Mr. Milton I really enjoy your channel.

I hope I don’t wear you out with questions. You were right about Wood-Mizer liking to push double hard. His reasoning was you get more sharpening with the double hard than the silver tips. Do you know if that’s correct or do you bother resharpening. Thanks for all your help
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama 4 күн бұрын
No, he is incorrect in my experience. A double hard, or any hardened body blade will fatigue crack and fail sooner than a more flexible resaw band, such as a Silvertip. The true advantage of a Double Hard is if you don’t have a debarker and you are having to cut through mud in the bark, the DH will stay sharper longer, but as far as number of sharpenings, there is no advantage to DH bands. Actually, exactly the opposite is true, the average number of sharpenings I get from DH bands is 2 to 3, and the average sharpenings of Silvertips I get is 3 or 4, before they fatigue crack and break. It is also dependent on the thickness of the band, WM 0.045 thic’ will have more flex life and more sharpenings than a thicker band, such as the 0.055”. Also, as you sharpens the width of the band decreases, and at some point, the band less wide than minimum on your band rollers, and they will take the set out of one side of the teeth. This is a good topic for a video, thanks.

Oddly enough, I went on a walk about when I was about thirty and so ran a two row cotton picker for a man who was beyond a doubt the most selfish fellow you should encounter. He gave me a chance to operate one for his little farm in Arkansas. I had to wash by hand all those spindles before operating the machine, and since it took a couple of hours to do this at eighty five cents a hour, thought its boring but hey its work. I started on a wednesday and payday was on friday. I had my numbers in my head added up the amount of money I was earning. Kind of excited in a way. One problem tho, I mentioned friday as payday but not the friday I was working towards as he paid every two weeks. My bellybutton rubbing a hole in my backbone told me since he was so ecstatic about how hard a worker I was. I had my three days of work on friday and said to him, sir; I seem to think your a liking my work and I just really need a few dollars for gas and some food money. He told me that he provided a way to work in the back of his pickup so no money for gas. Then he did say since I was a great hard worker he would advance me five dollars! Mr., no matter who and where you might be, making five dollars stretch another seven days would be a right hard touch to do. So I said.. "we work from can see to can't see,, so I must of made more than enough for say twenty dollars??? He told me I had to clean those spindles and he did not pay a man for setting on his butt for two hours in the morning and at night before going home. Now I had walked to work that particular morning as it was only fifteen miles to his farm. Didn't allow much time for any sleep that night an admit was lot more tuckered out than I figured would be in but gave it all that day for him. FIVE DOLLARS!!! for a man to make last another week and eat plus walk them miles as his pickup was full and just hang on with the black folks working for him. I never met in my lifetime a finer bunch of fellows to work with. Always had a smile on their faces, most of them close to sixty plus years of age and tromping the cotton down in the bins to hold more of that cotton seed. Many scars from weevils they encountered everyday biting them. Their bodies were frail and yet no complaining was ever heard! That man drove a brand new pickup and did not allow anyone inside of this truck. He instead sat inside it with the air conditioning on and drank beer all day! He just tossed the cans or bottles on the ground and one or more of those black men picked them up and placed them in their aprons to place in the garbage for this man. Now this man was a big fat fellow and he showed a lot of stress in his skin and mostly his face when he stepped out of his truck to talk to me. He had me in a bind and so said nicely to him..... why do you treat people like animals..... more like cruel to animals? He said some right down derogatory things about them..... and then is when I just lost it. I had worked all my life, even as a young man working for my dad before old enough to argue, and so about ten years since coming home from vietnam.... I was not afraid of hard work but his jeering of those men, dang good older gentlemen who gave it all everyday and him holding a can of beer in either hand as he had a open can in one hand and the other for when that one ran out.... like I said, I just lost it right there. I punched him in the eye and caught that full can he dropped before he fell. I reached into his truck and grabbed a couple more for my back pockets. I told him that he could keep his money as I had enough time in to pay for the "FREE BEER" and started walking home. I told him to keep his precious money. He ran up behind me and grabbed my shoulder to spin me around but I was mad and spun right quick to face him. He quickly changed his mind about tangling with me. Those men standing there with grins on their faces fearing any laughter told me what I needed to know.. Sorry about a book length comment but just couldn't help myself. Just a part of my nature I suppose so hoped you are forgiving of that. I never gave thought as to this information you shared with us as he (that fellow in my comment) made us use our pocket knife to clean those spindles. It took a good while to scrape all of the corkscrew spindles. Had it been a machine of these times with a multitude of rows for picking, heck you wouldn't get one machine clean by yourself in a day using dull pocket knives.

I was using an oily solution before and it works like a charm... very good tip and helps a lot. Diesel - im not a big fan of it - although my brand of sawmill writes it in red-blot letters - DO NOT USE DIESEL... because of drive belts, rubber things getting messed up etc... which makes sense to me. What i really like about your channel is - you are not telling this "you must do this and that ..." or "thats the best blalbalbalba"... you are sharing valuable information just like everybody of us would stand infront of you - thats becoming so rear at youtube - no bullshit centent creator stuff but simple saying honest opinion about a topic. PLEASE keep this attitude and this type of content coming. I also like (and this is not meant negativ in any sense/way) not high gloss 3000 animation cinematic video production style. Hey Robert, squirrel question (off topic): any thoughts on using using methyl bromide to eliminate insects on rough cut lumber, then kiln dry for much shorter time?
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama 6 күн бұрын
Methyl Bromide is very commonly used for fumigation of logs for export and import into several countries, and is pretty effective but has a high method of usage process that must be followed to be effective. Since it is a fumigant, it is released into the atmosphere as a toxic gas, and requires setbacks, documented release rates even if below regulated thresholds, and otherwise the usage of it is very highly regulated in the log industry as it is toxic. Far easier to just say I don't use any chemicals to sterilize my wood, and the time and electrical cost lost per load is more than made up in lack or permitting, oversight and most importantly, enhanced customer safety because no toxic substances ever touch our wood, which to me is probably the most important thing.

Mr.Milton. You have caused me to think back to when I was growing up. We used crosscut saws to fell some of the trees. The yellow pines, some 24 to 36 inch diameter, would gum up the saw teeth and rakers to the point that you couldn't pull the saw. Especially when the moon was waxing or full.. We would take a coke bottle, we called it a dope bottle, and fill it half full of coal oil or kerosene. Then we would stuff green pine straw into the neck of the bottle to make a brush. A third person would apply this to the saw blade as the two workers pulled the saw. This would keep the pine pitch from sticking ti the saw. The additive Mr. Wood mizer uses sounds like a graphite solution that metal workers use to cause drill bits cut smoother and longer before dulling.. Just a coup[e of ounces mixed in a gallon of water turns it to milk. Great video. I intend to try the spindle cleaner. I see Chip hid during the video. He knows why that puppy is there and he's thinking he may be on his way out. Ha!Ha! Thanks Mr. Milton I believe this will extend the blade life and keep.it sharp longer. Another great video!!!
