CRAZY RESULTS with the Fuji XT-5 and the NON-RESOLVING XF 10-24 R OIS.. In this video, we'll be using the new Fuji XT-5 camera with the older non-resolving Fuji XF 10-24 f4 R OIS lens. I will also be using the fabulous Fuji XF 8-16 f2.8 and see how they compare during a short location scouting trip near my home. The sensor in the X-T5 has more megapixels and therefore some lenses don't resolve as well hence my wanting to test out both wide angle zooms.
What I found out was very interesting! One lens cost more than double what the other cost and is a premier professional lens. The results were not as expected. I also made some long shots of the lighthouse near this location with the 70-300 and was not disappointed.

Lovely video. I ignore that "optimised" list from Fujifilm. My copy is sharp from wide open, edge to edge, from 10mm to 18mm on the X-T5. Beyond 18mm, it's a bit soft in the corners at any setting. It's still good enough, and I will just use my 18-55mm in that range if needed, where it's usually at its best.

I still enjoy my 10-24 as the results look identical to the 8-16

great video Kirk 🙂 I did a lot of testing with my 10-24 on my X-T5 in the wake of poor reviews on YT and found the results I was getting were perfectly sharp right into the corners, in stark contrast to these reviews! I think for some reason the T5 became the camera to hate amongst many YT reviewers.

Yup nothing wrong with the 10-24. The 8-16 is nice but built for certain things and way too much money for me.

Great video Kirk and very timely for me. I bought an X-T5 about a month ago and still have my X-T3. I went out shooting with the 5 and saw fuzzy edges on birds and stationery subjects with my 70-300mm and my 35mm f2 which are both on the approved list for the 40mp sensor. Dusted off the X-T3 and set up side by sides: same aperture, base ISO on each and on a tripod. X-T3 was winning hands down for sharpness. Called B&H and Fujifilm who both urged me to send it back. Too early for an answer but after seeing some very trusted reviews, yours and now DP Review, I'm pretty confident I got one that just wasn't quite right. I will be buying another one soon, especially because of this video. I loved shooting with it and look forward to another one.

Yes something is wrong. You can see how sharp my images are. The 70-300 is awesome and even my 16-80 is great just not wide open in the corners. Send it back.

Kirk I always hit the thumbs up in the first 10 seconds...I've never had to un-click the thumbs up icons when I hit the end of your videos! ;) I also own the 10-24mm Mk1, it got doused with a heavy mist from waterfall in Yosemite. It survived! Thanks for the comparison between the lenses!

Interesting video Kirk. I've thought about the 8-16 at various times but I've been dissuaded by the same disadvantages you discussed. Perhaps if I shot real estate for a living. Besides, I've always enjoyed my 10-24 and see no reason to replace it. Also nice view of the lighthouse. For sure you need to make the trek up to shoot it next time you get some fresh snow.

Good video, thanks. I have the 10-24 Mk1, it gives me what I want for the most part at 10 or 24. It's a good wide angle lens, well worth it's price.

Hello! I'm going to buy X-T5 after my X-T4 and I'm torn between two options. do you think I should buy 150-600 instead of 100-400? new lens, new lenses... do you think it's worth it? After all, both are among Fuji's recommended lenses for 40mp. Thank you so much for your great videos and sincerity. I wish you health and happiness.

Honestly it depends on what you are going to do with it. I’m not going to sell my 100-400. The 150-600 is too slow at the long end at f8. Yes it’s a newer lens and probably faster than the 100-400 lighter as well. So if you plan on hiking with it for wildlife it would be a good choice. I’ve decided I love the 100-400 for outdoor field sports and the occasional landscape photo that needs lots of length and compression.

That's exactly my goal. If there is not much difference in terms of optics and sharpness, I think it is unnecessary to pay more money. So what do you think about Rolling Shutter? Will the X-T5 have such a problem for photography?@@KirkWilliamsonphotography

Rolling shutter does not affect me since I never use the electronic shutter or video. Well very little for video

Just found your channel and enjoying your relaxed style and locations. I agree, I think the 8-16 is a bit of overkill. I shoot astro and have the Rokinon 8mm 2.8 fisheye, which is great. I’d be interested to try the new 8mm 3.5 as a rectilinear alternative to the fisheye. Do you have any plans to try one? Greeting from Scotland! @scotlandseaandsky.

I've been on the fence w.r.t. the X-T5 - my primary body is the GFX100s, and my secondary is an X-T4. (I also have a 590nm Infrared-converted X-T3). I have the 14mmF2.8 ('cuz it's a good wide, and works well w/ Infrared), and16-80/50-140mm for my back up set up. W/ the 14mm & 16-80mm *not* listed as a "fully resolving" on the X-T5 it's a bit of a bother. (Why pay for all those megapixels if you have to compromise at all?) OTOH I have the 100-400 that I use for occasional birding - and the X-T5 is *much* better for that than the X-T4. (sigh) I may end up selling the X-T4 & 16-80 and save up for the X-T5 (plus 23mmF2 + 35mmF2) and go with a (mostly) prime set - 14mmF2.8 / 23mmF2 / 35mmF2 and the 50-140mm. The 23mmF2 & 35mmF2 would also work well with the IR body.

Alan since you have the ultimate setup with the 100s I would do as you are suggesting and go with the small light primed with the X-T5.

Ever bring a viewer with you to see the back screen ? Just like the Pana-Vue you'd use on a light box to look at slides. I wish mine was magnetic. By the way, you asked about that "problem" which appears to be vignetting upper left and right. Perhaps your sensor is larger than your T-4.

you need to zoom in and pixel peep or print out on a large paper if you want to see the quality difference, otherwise you could just take those pictures with a smartphone and overall it would still look just as good

I did that just not in the video. The 10-24 holds up just fine alongside the 8-16.

Haha good one ☝️. I think they put the ladder up I the early 1920’s but I’m not sure. Heck the could have put it up there in the late 1800’s.

If you got a wobbly tripod using a telephoto, have you tried out a tripod stone bag? Has worked great for my heavy 100-400 on an X-H2.

To be honest any tripod will show vibration at 400mm FF equivalent. As you can see by the video it was rock solid. I normally will hang my bag under the tripod if it feels unstable.
