Great work. You did more in less than an hour than I could have done using the traditional methods with the lathe tools in four or more hours. I am thinking of making something similar now. Thanks for the video. It is inspiring.

I think making those rounds with firewood is a neat idea because it adds alot of character to the piece that would not otherwise be found in glued up blanks to get the same profile. that floating router you got there is cool idea and so tempting... Thanks alot

that is great what made you think of that is there a commercial application you seen .some where.. 60 years ago i got knocked out learning to run a lathe with a rough piece like that the old guy that was showing me was more shook up that me .... so when i see some one light in to a log like that it still scares me but it never stopped me from running a lathe JUST HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR ONE.

You know you have to be enjoying what you are seeing when you are talking to your screen asking to zoom out so you can see whats going on. You zoomed in to show the sand paper finish and then replaced your template and used a c clamp a couple of times when you were routing the square end, would have loved to have seen what you were doing. Again though, another great videa, cheers from Oz, Gordon

anyone with a lot of router experience learns to run a router backwards under certain conditions. if you're trying to take off too much going forward you'll dig in rip out a chunk and send the whole thing flying across the shop. once you learn to control it going backwards, you will eliminate about 99% of what I call blowouts. it's a little piece that goes chicken out across the shop in to nowhere. I run my router backwards all the time, I get down to the last 16th or 30 second of an inch then go forward when LastPass and it's beautiful. you are truly a genius and I think I have some new projects to build.

+Mark Jacobsen "dig in rip out a chunk", the only experience I have is metalworking, but want to get into wood working. At metal working you always work forward, but is what u mean with wood that it will (might) break through your whole work following the grain?
@markjacobsen717
@markjacobsen717 8 жыл бұрын
+02Gorillaz94 yes, it never fails on the last door, too much wood coming off and the bit hits a flaw or weak spot and bang! off goes a little piece into nowhere.!LoL

You could make a square block on your lathes drive spindle with a stop arm to contact with it to stop rotation so you can cut your square by locking it in the four stop positions. This would work for any sized square cut you will need. Eliminating all the stop blocks and construction square. Otherwise it is an awesome cutter

Nice work !! But I got lots of questions.. Tracers are not new, But questions about Your machine.. I love it.. How is it floating ?? Is it counter balanced or spring loaded and damped.. What's the max cutter size it will hold.?? Why the spray substance ?? How hard are You pushing on that handle.?? Did You sweat ?? Doesn't dust stick to the substance.?? or sweat ??

Are you finding the melamine chip board is holding up both in wear and tear durability and vibration, pocket holes aren't turing to pockets of loose sawdust are they? I think you can only expect so much from Pl 400 or whatever butt jointed to paint face with screws. To build again would you use different sheet material?

What do you see as the benefit to this type of approach, as opposed to the other? I'm asking because I'm thinking of adding a copier to my lathe and don't want to build 2 different ones (but the other approach is obviously much simpler to build).

I just seen izzy's latest video. First thing I noticed is that he will never be able to get 2 copies the same because his router is just basically floating around. Notice how he angles it randomly. It would have to be fixed to work right. I'll tell ya. There is a reason why he does it in fast forward. Give him the challenge of doing two exact copies in real time. That's what will show ya what it's worth. Bet he will block ya from commenting like he did me.

think it would simplify and making the square end eazier if you make a clamp / squared hook with a hinge from the backsplash you then cut the first flat rotate it a quarter turn and swing the clamp against the previously made flat to block it in place and cut the second flat , etc etc you could go round all four sides with just the one hinged clamp wish prolly would make it faster to make the pillar, prolly could adapt the main routerjig too so it can cut the flats to the right height without replacing it just put sumtin there to stop the slider from going past the round parts and not router the square part untill the woodlathe is stationairy and you need to make the flats the way describe above , it shouldnt make any difference with the hinged clamp mounted to the rear as you make the first flat on watever is at the top at that moment , it might just take an eye to predict if the deepest grooves in the scrap of wood will clear the flat parts or leave a dent in the finished product

Absolutely unreal! Are you going to do a video on how to make it? And do you like this "floating router" approach better than say a template mounted under your workpiece that you could "slide" a router into? Check out Izzy Swan's newest video to see what I mean. REALLY cool, man. You have yourself a new subscriber.

Mark Verwey asked about the bit you are using. I too would like to know. I have asked Sears and Lowes and neither have heard of a router bit this long. It it a standard bit? the only thing I can see that is long like this are augur bits, but I do not know how or if they would be compatible or even work like a router bit. What are they called and where so you find them?

William Misek, Hang onto that bit. It looks like a replacement might be very hard to find. I tried looking under Hutting and Porter Cable as you suggested and can't find any security door kits. By a redirect Hutting sent me to Tyler Tool where the longest straight router bits were 2.5 long double fluted or 2 inch spiral out or in; nothing longer for the cutting area in 1/2 inch router bits. www.tylertool.com/freud-12-130-1-2-in--x-2-1-2-in--double-flute-router-bit/feun12-130,default,pd.html?start=76&cgid=router-bits is the longest. The overall bit length is 4.375 in fluted or www.tylertool.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-tyler-tool-Site/default/Search-Show?q=spiral%20router%20bit 4.0 inches in spiral. Are you counting 5 inches as the cutting area or the overall length of th bit before it is chucked up? Mortising chisel router bits were a little better in cutting area, but their overall length could be as long as ten inches for the overall length of the tool. I do not know about the chisel tip and spiral body; how that would work in this lathe application. What kind of tip does your bit have?

Tiivi Vaavi the use of an end mill in a router is possible. They are designed to cut metal primarily at the tip or "end" but it might work on wood even if used with the side of the tool. They certainly come in a larger variety of lengths. I am seeing ones with overall cutting lengths of as much as eight inches (mostly to reach into tight places and cut with their tip). Most have small fluted lengths not so much intended for cutting along the length, but for sharpening by regrinding. A few seen here do have five of six inch lengths with a fluted length of more than half their overall length (although most have only one or two inches of spiral cut area). See here: www.atlascuttingtools.com/categories/End-Mills/Carbide-Roughers/4-Flute-%252d-Rougher%7B47%7DFinisher/ I suppose these could work if they could chuck up well in the collet and handle the speeds of a router at that length. Most milling work is done at slower speeds even when working on softer metals. They also get plenty of cutting oil to keep them cooler. Do you have any idea, William Misek, if this would work in a router? Have you tried this yourself Tiivi, or is this just a guess like I am making?

Safety is always the very first consideration and this man is very dangerous. That g cramp for a start could vibrate off ledge and down onto rotating timber ending up goodness knows where, also the turned articals could do the same. If he lost control of the router at anytime he could have a very serious problem to himself. He would also have helped himself if he had first rough turned the timber into a cylinder by hand turning. Best thing for anyone who needs to copy items is go on a course of hand copy turning. I've been a professional turner for most of my life and can copy faster than this man could ever do with this setup, he is also limited to the amount of detail he can put into his turnings using this contraption.
@druppert7
@druppert7 7 жыл бұрын
I agree with the level of detail, John, but you doing it faster than this from a scrap piece of wood by hand? No way. Please make a video because I am serious, I would love to see how you do it so much faster than I can. This blows my mind how fast and efficient it is - he's actually making a profit. If a piece needed more detail, there is nothing stopping him from finishing it by hand, in the usual fashion.

I would think that the bit doesn't really matter, It was toast by the time he was done.... That's Bit Abuse. Hand turning the blank round first would sure save lots of money on buying a new bit every time you turn a leg...
@timmynums
@timmynums 9 жыл бұрын
chill out. the bit was black with use from the start and cut the flats just fine at the end. not toast as far as I can tell. with the angled cut vector from the rotation of the workpiece, I bet the cut in this application is smoother than just about any other job you use a router for. nice video.
