I appreciate your concerns. Some saws are lesser quality then others. I habe run this jig on cheap saws, cabinetsaws, skills saws turned upside down in a piece of ply. Never had a problem. Thats not to say someone might not build the jig right and get hurt. But like everything else in woodworking when done correctly it can be done safely as possible. Understanding the physics of the process is the best place to start. Starting with the fact that at no time is any body part near the blade.

I've seen and dome some crazy stuff in woodshop, but this thing takes the cake. I'd imagine you'd not be well served buying cheap saw-blades with this sort of setup. But even still this is a LOT cheaper then a mill! This is like woodworking mad-science, I love it

This is excellent! Any chance you have a video on how it was made?
@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX 10 жыл бұрын
Geoff Leigh me? Nope. I can see how he built it, but I don't have a table saw, at the moment, so wouldn't have anything to use the jig on. It's basically a wodden frame, with some mounting points to act as bearings, and it sits up against the fence, and it set up so the blade won't cut the 'lathe' but the wood you're working on. The rotation is provided by a big drill, I think.

Now in march of 2019 im building a workshop with a outside deck to sit on and enjoy a cold beer and a hard days work and i shall now be making my dowls for the sides of the deck using thos technique

i made a very similar jig. If you tilt your blade at 45 degrees you dont even need the drill on the back side to rotate the stock. The blade does the work for you! Very nice though. I love the adjustability of your jig.

Whow, this looks just like something that would go right down Matthias Wandel's alley! With the way he is, I'm surprised that he doesn't already have a video of his having made one of these (or hasn't even before you)! Nice work, pretty cool! Just be careful not to run your hand down the length of the jig while the blade's running!

On the front of your jig, facing the camera, on the right hand side, is that cherry wood? I love the grain and color of that wood. I love the idea of not buying a bunch of separate tools when the same tools can be used more than one way. Nice job!

a few questions: 1. when will you post plans on how you built this? 2. have you ever use odd size logs to make tenons? if so how do you keep it from being out of balance? 3. what type of saw blade are you using ripping, plywood or.....? keep the cool stuff coming!
@izzyswan
@izzyswan 11 жыл бұрын
I probably wont be posting plans for this build. But I have a very long and boring vid plan on how I made it.. lol I originally built my first one many years ago for cutting tenons on stretchers for rustic chairs, and posts for beds. Just go slow the drill down for out of balance stock.

Great idea. I need to turn down some dowels to about 2" in diameter and 2' long to insert into fiberglass tent poles I purchased form the local Army-Navy surplus store. They are 4' each and after putting them all together, I should have a pole with a total length of 32' and use it to connect the wire for my ham radio antenna. Thanks Izzy.

I just made one of these based on other designs yours is definitely better than all the other designs I’ve seen. I came to the conclusion that you have to have bearings and one end needs to be a pin and not threaded. I’ll be modifying mine to be more like yours before I use it again.

just wanted to say "Thank You" for all you do on here. I'm a beginner at all this woodcrafting. I needed something to turn out some 1" dowels. I don't have a lathe so I'm giving your idea a try. I built my jig from scrap pallet planks. it's ugly as all hell. I have yet to test it as I'm a little nervous. Update (3 hours later); IT WORKS! It needs a ton of tweaking... but it works. Thanks again my friend, you rock.
