Join Derek as he explores Grand Isle, the only inhabited barrier island in Louisiana, during spring migration in April. The island is currently full of colorful warblers and other migrants, which makes birding any part of the island exciting.

Thanks! It was a nice surprise. Since then I’ve been seeing more of them during the day. I think it’s since they’re preparing for nesting season.

good stuff. I am already missing migration, even though it's not completely over.

Same. Definitely in the post-migration lull at the moment in south LA.

Hmm.. Awesome video. Is Grand Isle any good in early August? Or is it mostly just in spring?
@BadgerlandBirding

It’s good all year, but for different species in different areas of the island. I haven’t gotten out to look for warblers or really any other woodland migrants yet in the fall but should have the opportunity to this year.

Thanks for the video. I have always wanted to check out Grand Isle. But I can't ever pull myself away from Sabine Woods. The day you were at Grand Isle we had 24 warbler species at Sabine. I also shoot birding video, so I can wholeheartedly recommend it if you ever return to the Upper Texas coast in the spring.

Sabine Woods in Texas? Hope you got the Sulfur-bellies flycatcher when it was there :) I’m a big fan of Peveto too

@@BadgerlandBirding I didn't see it the last time it was reported. But I saw it there about 15 years ago. I like Peveto but have never had a good day there. When it's good there, it's usually even better at Sabine. Someday I'll put some of my hours and hours of Sabine video online. I think you would like it.

Everything seemed to have made it to Minnesota last week. Yellow Warbler, Black and White Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Rose Breasted Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, Yellow Rumped Warbler, and the Scarlet Tanager. The Grosbeaks and the Bunting have nested nearby, they are on the feeder multiple times a day. I love spring!

I noticed a Red Knot in the video was tagged. Is that common for all species there or for just some?
@BadgerlandBirding
@BadgerlandBirding 3 жыл бұрын
Yup! That group had a bunch of tagged birds. The Green flags are birds that were tagged in Grand Isle. They’ve been a focus species for a bunch of studies down here because of their long distance migration and population decline. I’ll be doing more videos about the research soon. Other species that are banded around here are Reddish Egret, Royal Tern, Least Tern, American Oystercatcher, Wilson’s Plover, Snowy Plover, Piping Plover, Black Skimmer, and the occasional Sandering to name a few.
@BadgerlandBirding
@BadgerlandBirding 3 жыл бұрын
So the tagging is mostly for species that scientists have a particular interest in, not all species.
@Oltoir
@Oltoir 3 жыл бұрын
@@BadgerlandBirding have you tried to get enough pictures to get the banding info so you can report it? That was done locally here with a ring-billed gull and they inadvertently discovered the oldest one yet!
@BadgerlandBirding
@BadgerlandBirding 3 жыл бұрын
@@Oltoir yup! I actually ended up working with the organizations doing the bird banding after reporting one and I’ll be doing a video on the banding process for the Knots and their research 👍
