One of the things many people don't realize is many old businesses and even warehouses were put in when trucks were smaller and trailers were shorter. Cab over tractors and 35 or 40 foot trailers. Later years came the 45 and 53 foot trailers and long nose tractors with big sleepers, but those businesses were still on the same narrow streets with everything right out to the curb. I have had my chauffeurs/CDL since 1978 and a lot has changed in trucking over the years.

Yeah, you can see the proof of that in Detroit and Chicago. There’s some places that literally a company shouldn’t even ask you to go but somehow if you got the skills of a Jedi trucker, you can put it in the hole with a nuthair to spare.

I’ve been driving trucks for coming up on 6 yrs. My OTR days are behind me but, I run Day cab locally in NYC almost everyday. I have 1 delivery on my decline list so far. I find it funny every time drivers go to tight customers & they always suggest / say “the other drivers usually blindside when they come here, it’s easier” you take one look at it and the blindside is a big no 🤣🤣🤣 ! Good job keeping your cool

I remember a few times in the box truck getting there @ 3am and it was raining so hard I couldn't see the dock to back in. I said we will have to wait until the rain slows down some. They complained of course so I said well if you wanna stand next to the truck and guide me back I will do it. They left me alone after that. The dock had no yellow lines or any lights of course that we asked for many times. Go figure.

Tips for NYC driving: There was only one truck stop in the city, and it's always full, so you cannot count on stopping there. Plan to arrive in the early morning and be out of there before night time. Traffic doubles every 15 minutes after 6am; plan accordingly. When you are feeling crowded, take it slow, concentrate, focus, and be patient. BTW, nice job Kevin!

I noticed your rear tandems were not all the all the way forward. It helps when you're working with inches. The autoshift transmission uses air pressure to operate. Going in reverse, do you have a creep mode.I only drove an auto autoshift for 3 weeks while my truck was in the shop. I would push on the throttle, and nothing happens, and all at once, it takes off fast. Great Job Kevin

If you stop delivering to "hard to get into" locations, you could soon run out of work. A lot of older businesses are located at hard to get to spots.

@happypappy6371 I have been driving for 10 years . I have been to more than my share of cities that were not designed or constructed for 8 foot wide , 13'6 tall 70 feet long tractor trailers . I will absolutely not risk my professional license and livelihood foolishly in areas that simply are accidents waiting to happen.

@michaelrains2268 so when the company dispatches you to a destination what do you tell them?
@michaelrains2268
@michaelrains2268 Жыл бұрын
@wilE6764 Nowadays, I have my own authority and dot numbers . During the time I was a company, if I felt the shipper / reciver, was only reasonable to dock a straight truck. I did have the option to have a no list. Bear in mind that sometimes these locations are in gang territory within the inner city areas. There has been more than once I have awakened, to the sound of gun fire in LA or NYC . To borrow a phrase a neighbor of mine would often use ' the juice isn't worth the squeeze ' . Thanks so much for asking, and enjoy a blessed Sunday.

You are right Kevin. These types of places are indeed a risk to our CDL. Not worth the NYC pay or whatever companies give as an incentive. Your license is worth much more than that. Safe travels!

Great job man. That place was not designed for these sleeper cabs with the 53 foot trailers. You have really watch the tandems of that trailer and have your head on swivel. Watching your mirrors on both sides. They should have you drop the load in a drop lot on the outskirts of the city. For the local guys with the day cab trucks.

All you can do is take your time and get thru it. The cars will just have to wait or turn around and go another way. If they get upset and wave their arms etc oh well too damn bad. Let Crete know and hopefully you wont have to go back there again. Most of the places and people who dont drive really dont understand and most of them dont care either. Kevin get this, I once had a delivery where there wasnt enough room between the trailers and the guy wanted me to fold both my mirrors in and back to the dock when I refused they were very upset, oh well. I hope you have a good dispatcher.

There are just a few things you are missing out on. Number one, the final destination being in the middle of a busy thoroughfare in the heart of NYC, not a quiet neighborhood. The entire cab of your truck blocking a city sidewalk for 4 hours straight while all sorts of strange folk peer into the windows while you are in the warehouse. And why are me and my wife in the warehouse and not out sitting in our truck like you guys did? Because we are hand unloading 44,000# of a floor load onto pallets while a fat slob comes back to grab a skid that we hand stacked just whenever he feels like it. He is busy with other things like quite loudly making sure his satellite dish company subscription will show sexual intercourse! But I digress to the 1980's once again. At least you had a point A to point B load and didn't have to fingerprint it. Best wishes, love your videos!!

In my years of driving in Britain and Australia I have many times had to get into Docks that were built for small Trucks, and just slightly wider than the Trailer, even some you backed in Blindside, the art is to get the Trailer lined up correctly first. Always best to get in and out during the night time anywhere in the city. Of course that isn't always possible. Last couple of times into Yonkers I've been taking in a customers large pneumatic which is 51" with wheels all the way back, have to swing wide into oncoming traffic at every turn. Pays more than just $100 extra for my troubles though. I try to avoid the island anymore, first five years of trucking I feel like I did enough of it out there.

Yes! Sage advice. There was no way around the 9am live unload time. Kevin tried. So he drove in at 5am which wasn’t too bad for traffic. But the parked cars that arrived early in the day were a serious pry.

Hi Kev and Tania, Ta for replying. Glad you have the new truck. I’m an old bloke in Sydney Australia, and now that I’ve found your channel, I look for it every day . My late father was a truck driver in Finland ( where I was born), in the 1950s’. I know it’s all so much better now as far as safety is concerned., and through him ,I have been interested in trucks ever since.BTW here in Oz we have a very high mix of HGV from all over the world.A mix of Cab over and Long Nose. Our long distance trucks are called Road Trains and usually pull 3-5 trailers.Also our truck drivers are called “Truckies”…and your Tractor as you call them are either Trucks or Rigs.The English language can get confusing. Happy trucking guys! 👍 PS. Google Road Trains and you’ll find a lot of info on them on KZbin.

I can't believe that highway trucks are even allowed into a residential neighborhood like that. That bakery should have to pay for you to drop their stuff at a warehouse and brought in by box truck. Or at the very least. The bakery should have a forklift they can bring out so you can just park in the street and they unload you in the street.
