Crazy Turned Box

This week's video is another lidded box. This one has a somewhat Asian shape. You can see more of my videos here: / @themessystudio .
I started out to make a walnut bowl, but as I turned it, a shape began to appear that I couldn't ignore. I was drawn to it. So I went with what I saw. At first, it was a square winged bowl. Then I saw a Pagoda like shape and decided to add a winged lid.
I used big leaf maple from an old player piano that was built in 1936 for the lid. A series of events made it necessary to add to the bottom of the lid so I used Sipo. Finally I used Cocobolo for the finial. It, too, has an Asian inspired shape.

Pagoda was the first thing I thought of when I saw the finished piece. Go with a matte finish.
