Stunted by poverty. The Australian convict records record short men and women. A 4’11” Irish teenager who survived the great famine in Ireland, a 5’1” man from the Drury Lane slum area. They’re 2 I’ve studied. Australians used to watch the height increase in the children and grandchildren of the Brits once they had decent food and exposure to sunshine and clean air

The most terrible thing and I read a few comments and I didn't see any mentioning that the majority of them robbed stuff like clothes or things they could sell to have a bit of money. Their clothes look in such a terrible estate and the children ... they break my heart , just rags and the sadness in their eyes . I can understand why Dickens wrote and tried to help them so much. Petty crimes that dont deserve the punishment . How those kids were going to become in "good" adults when they never ever had a chance ?

Thank you. As ever, amazing source material. All of the people sat on the same chair. Interesting to hear of their stature, that they were all significantly shorter than modern, well nourished people. Also to witness the destitution and early ageing. It would be very interesting to know more about the victims. I cannot imagine some of them to have been much better off than the perpetrators and what's the problem with railway workers which necessitated them stealing ale? Opportunistic thievery for some, desperate deeds for others. Jailing people is what they did in the mid-nineteenth century and that might have been a better option than freezing and starving to death for a homeless, destitute and unemployable person.

The court systems were no joke. The sentences were extreme in 90% of the cases, especially the children. Another thing I found interesting was the height of the men & women. Most of the men were 5.5 to 5.7 feet tall. The women were even shorter ranging from 4.7 to 5.3 feet tall. There was one woman who was almost 6 feet tall. This is my first visit to your channel and this video was very interesting indeed. I will be looking at more in the future.

I wonder too, about whether their would be an undiminished blemish on their character, affecting any future employment. All of these people were clearly needy and lived hard, difficult lives. A few of my ancestors were convicted and exported to New South Wales for life in the early 19th century for similar offences to those mention here in a later period after exportation. For example, "embezzling" (a barmaid stealing some bar takings" and "stealing a handkerchief". One of my ancestors was flogged repeatedly as a convict for "disrespecting the military" and "failing to attend church"

Thank you for these films. They are so interesting and entertaining. I'm sure your style of narration greatly contributes to that. Couldn't help but look at those pictures and wonder whether all those people being made to sit in the same pose were sitting on the same chair and wondered how many years service the chair put in! Reminded me of when I joined the Royal Navy back in 1984 and as part of The New Entry fortnight before basic training began we were required to sit in a photo-me machine for two photographs both in the same pose. First one in working uniform holding a long chalkboard displaying our service number under our chins for our Royal Navy Identity cards and the second one for a passport which required us to be wearing civilian clothes but with no display of the chalkboard. To save time getting ready for the second photo, we simply put on the provided old, wooley jumper which just showed the collar of our uniform shirt over the jumper. I wondered how many thousands of young men all got to put on that same jumper before it gave up the ghost.

How fascinating! Thank you. The height of the women caught my attention. I have a Victorian woman's corset and some dress bodices, having long had an interest in vintage clothing as social history, and they're very small. As many women were 4-foot something, to just over 5-foot, my clothing items could have fit many in the population of Newcastle. I'm reflecting on the fact that forty years prior to these perpetrators being incarcerated, many of these petty theft crimes would have meant transportation here to Australia.

That was an excellent step back in time…it struck me how small everyone was then….4’ somethings, I don’t think I heard one person reach 6’ or over. Explains why old properties from that era are so low to us by comparison. The other thing of note is the hard lives they had to lead left it’s mark on their looks. Some men were only in their early 20’s but looked to be in their 40’s/50’s! Today we often complain about the cost of things, and now we have to live etc, but seriously,by comparison we almost live like kings. Poor people. It didn’t say what the hard Labour was, but it really would have been hard, and they could be yours or my ancestors! Interesting how they seem to pose for a mugshot on a chair? Their height seems to be of note also. I think many were victims of circumstance rather than of real crime though.

Rock breaking and picking oakum (unpicking tar from old ship ropes) were common punishments. Both hard work and repetitive.

It seems like if you stole something of high value yet less of a life necessity, you got off easier, so why not just steel a watch or necklace, then sell it to a pawn for some boots or a trowel if that's what you were wanting

Seems like everyone was stealing - and for some of them it sure looked more like necessity than criminal tendencies. The guy at 7:00 looks so familiar to me, but I have no idea if he resembles someone from my real life or from some form of entertainment. He looks like a Ben, though.

Daaamn! 12:17 Mary Patterson, 25 y.o., 6 months imprisonment for stealing poultry.😳 C’mon Judge!? Stealing food to eat with no priors mentioned!? Those were tough times. Ya know…🤔…when I was a kid I’d always hear from the oldest generation “Don’t steal” and things like that and I always thought so many of where like that because their generation was just so full of values and morals. Now I’m thinking it’s because their parents and grandparents were getting 6 month for stealing small items. 😏

I'm fond of the David Lean Great Expectations (mostly because of Joe the Blacksmith played by Bernard Miles but the whole cast is brilliant). Near the end is a court scene where a dozen people of different types were sentenced to death together as a job lot. My heart goes out to the small boys in your vid though, having been one once.

One of the things that was so terrible in Victorian England is that parents had to pay to get their son an apprenticeship or a trainee job in an office. Thus, it was very hard for poor people to advance socially. Many middle class and rich people had many orphans and relatives of limited means to educate and take of. The only real solution was to send them to the United States, Canada, Australia or one of the colonies. It would have helped if landowners had been forced to sell some of their rental properties to invest in business in the UK. Reading Victorian novels, such as those by Mrs. Henry Wood depict a very tenuous economy for nearly everyone, including the middle class and some of the upper class who saw agricultural profits diminish and found themselves involved in more speculative activities to maintain their estates and have dowries and money to educate their sons and fatherless relatives.

2:46 No, there isn't any reason to believe she has been working as a prostitute of the ground of that. She has been charged with several other offences, prostitution not being among them. Why is it automatically assumed she's been working as a prostitute? From the description she is clearly a confidence trickster, a conwoman.
