Alwa's Awakening & Cathedral Evercade Dual Cart - Phenomally Good! Could this be the best cart yet?

Cathedral IS phenomenal, no other word. Difficult, rewarding, and when you die it is because of you, not the game. Perfect retro action!

Great review, cheers. These games look fantastic. I'd never even heard of the Evercade until this week! I've just ordered a VS and a whole bunch of carts including this one. Looking forward to getting it all set up alongside my 4 generations of PlayStations and diving into these games. Can't believe I'll be able to play Gateway To Apshai again on the C64 cart after 40 years!!

Just ordered mine with the C64 Collection and the pin badges. These do look like properly decent titles. Cathedral looks like Shovel Knight X Metroid. So I'm all about that!

Alwa s Awakening is on my list Of games to pick up, I actually prefer the 8 bit graphics more than it's sequel But I am old And Live for nostalgia, The cart looked great and the quality of the manual Was fantastic, Great video mate

Can't wait till my copy of this and the C64 collection arrive in the mail tomorrow :). Just gotta get work out of the way and then evercade time. The only other game I can think of that has lots of hours of gameplay is brave battle saga. Took me over 35 hours to beat it. Can't wait to tuck into this dual cart.

@@CrazyBurger I have heavy nostalgia for the megadrive. Love brawlers like streets of rage and run and gun games. Can't beat a good platformer too. Picked up interplay cart for earthworm jim :)

@@Jacobite_Gaming check out the Jaleco collection. It has a couple of decent beat em ups. Piko 1 and Mega cats 1 are solid carts to pick up too.

2 quality games on this, although it’s a shame Alwa’s Legacy wasn’t included. I don’t know what options are available in the settings menu in AA. Did ‘assist mode’ get included? It does help to relieve some of the frustration. Also do you know what was added over the Steam/Switch version? One thing for sure, being native widescreen on the other versions gives more screen area which makes thing a little easier. Great to get a physical cart for these, something I wanted on Switch.

Yeah assist mode is there for Alwa's Awakening. Pity there's no legacy cause its a fantastic game and as you say wide-screen. Cathedral screen is a little bit wider but doesn't use full screen.

Mmm.. I'd say no. Probably not worth it.. plus they are better on the larger switch screen.

Cathedral/Awakening cart is not the best cart but one that is most perfect, couldn't ask for more or less! Maybe Shovel Knight on the same cart would of Aced it. 😁

I've discovered a very annoying bug on Cathedral exclusively on the VS: after three times (I use this technique before to lose the very last piece of lifebar to don't lose also your coins in the game) you quit the game to start it again directly from the cartridge's main menu (with the two selectable games), the fourth time you'll do this the game will crash at boot, forcing the VS to a reset. It doesn't happen on the handheld. Very disappointed with Blaze's quality control as always, but at least they said that the bug has been added to the list and it will be solved with the next updates. 🤞🏻

Ah damn bugs.. a massive bugbear (pun not intended) of mine. I've found more than a few in the last year. The more things they fix they more they break. This one is kinda unusual and to be fair.. probably not likely to have been picked up.

@@CrazyBurger in every case, for me Alwa's Awakening is a much better game than Cathedral. The first beats the second 10 to 0! In Alwa's I can get the typical sense of satisfaction about exploring places and discovering things who's the main point about an old school action/adventure game, while Cathedral is just a frustrating mess, with irritating boss fights and punishing level design! That's the kind of games we don't need anymore nowadays, a game who's bad in all wrong senses: it reminds me that kind of bad sensations I felt inside overrated crap (yes, but for me the whole series is crap, sorry for that...) like Ghosts 'n Goblins! And exactly like the Capcom series, the only positive thing for me is the soundtrack. The game is just an irritating, sadistic mess. I play this cart just for Alwa's Awakening, and that's a fantastic game for my taste.

@@josephthinhouse I kinda agree with you to a point. Cathedral is unfairly balanced and unnecessary hard or is it poor design or deliberate by design in its unfairness? Alwa is superb.. try Alwas Legacy.. its absolutely wonderful. Even better than awakenings.
