Mamady plays in the rhythm like a fish swims in water. Fluid, quick, darting here and there, shifting tone and tempo like a minnow eluding prey. Mamady rightfully deserves the title of grandmaster Fola. His flawless technique takes a back seat to his musicality, melody, timing, dynamics and sheer musical expression. It's amazing how he plays around the downbeat and still manages to stay locked in the groove. Grandmaster Fola Keïta is one of those rare musicians who never had to learn music to play music. He was born with it inside of him and the drum is his means of communicating his message to the world. To see and listen to him play is to hear him tell stories. One of a kind Fola who to me is one of the trinity of Grandmasters: Keïta, Konaté and Coulibaly.

I am 66 years young and just starting to play. How I wish I had started a long time ago! Such a simple yet complex instrument, and the pure talent of these true masters is such an inspiration!! They are having so much fun playing together. I have been calling the djembe the "fun drum", and I really believe that. Awesome video people!! Thank you!

I started when I was 63. I empathize. Now 4 years on, in a group that met at the senior center, and participate in Meetup circles But the truth probably is that was just not meant to happen at least for me until then. I will grow and get as good as I can but understand the limitations from starting so late. I would say just learn all you can and try not to compare yourself too much to this kind of virtuosity as it can be inspirational but discouraging. Just have fun with it and its a great way to bond with others.

This is so so fabulous on so many levels, but you know what really makes it...the space. Both of these guys...they leave the space. They make you wait for it, they play around with it, tease with it, play with the time of it. Some serious masters of the art. I've heard a lot of drummers both of djembe and dumbekl, that may have the licks..., but they so so the the space so so full of constant notes it looses all that makes it great.

Omg I wish I was there what an amazing time this must have been to witness Mamady and Bolokada this just confirm how much I neeeeeddddddd to start back drumming, I miss it all drumming and dancing there's just something about the call of the drums. I've seen these videos before but something led me to look it up today and listen and enjoy it yet again, it never gets old...

What makes this performance so great is their ability to convey complex emotions through their drumming. They are truly communicating through music. I mean, music in itself is just sound. Its our experience of music that makes it meaningful and beautiful. A musician who can convey his emotions well through music to his audience is a really great musician.

The fact of the matter is that those that still try to divide us here are not developed enough to understand that we should have already transcended those lower thoughts here on earth and instead have our eyes on the future of humanity allowing our collective efforts into the realm of the heavens into outer space, the only viable future for woman and man.

They serve two purposes. First, they have tiny metal rings on them that rattle when you play the drum, giving it a "snare drum" effect. You can't really hear it very well in the video, though. The other purpose is just for decoration.
