My brother brought this recording back from Vietnam (he was in USAF) in 1970, and I was amazed that only three musicians were playing. This completely blew me away and gave me goal to learn how to play guitar with the same soul and skill as Cream did in 1968. I listened to this live version of I'm so glad intently when I was in Vietnam (US Army), in 1970-1971. Wow, it still blows me away.

At its very best - and for me, I’m So Glad is pretty much their very best! - Cream was the product of three superb musicians, ALL soloing at the same time !! Ok, there was a structure that undergirded the whole piece - but each was doing their own thing throughout! Breathtaking !! Of all their repertoire, I’m So Glad with the ultra simple lyrics and really tight vocal harmonies, gave them the perfect base to absolutely perfect this technique. I have LOVED this performance for 50 years -and still do. Best Blues-Rock band ever ……. by a distance.

@darkanguiel10 жыл бұрын
You seem to have great ears, my friend :) You're right, Clapton tries to cue them first. Obviously I didn't mean "telepathic" in a completely literal sense; after some years jamming and playing together, they surely developed their own ways to understand and follow each other's lead. That change I mentioned just shows, I think how well that chemistry had developed.

***** Interesting, but I think you have it backwards. Clapton and Bruce were racing out ahead, and Baker was just trying to keep pace, but finally reined them in, and I think quite intentionally. Listen to Baker's drumming beginning at 6:34. He bangs the cymbals 9 times in a row with an insistently slower tempo, and Clapton and Bruce finally acquiesce at 6:40. Baker has said in interviews that he frequently had to rein in Bruce and Clapton by deliberately slowing the tempo: "With Cream, I was often holding Jack and Eric’s tempo down, and consciously doing so." www.forbes.com/sites/jimclash/2015/05/10/ginger-baker-to-do-rr-fantasy-camp-discusses-origins-of-sunshine-of-your-love/2/

There are still some stellar musicians and bands out there. Unfortunately, what the "dumbed down" tastes of the consumer makes popular, are "entertainers" nowadays. What becomes popular because of the low bar set by the average listener is the "smoke, dancers, pyrotechnics, stage shows, etc.", with performers that dance, but do not make music at all. The kindest thing that can be said about many is that they do very elaborate karaoke.
