András Zágon Hell yeah. Once again he's sounding like 10 drummers at once. His African-Jazz style just kicks ass.

the spoonful bootleg from the detroit grande ballroom to me is the greatest, it has an intensity that is ridiculous and the note choice is superb. this one still kicks ass

What a refreshingly interesting version to the Wheels of Fire live version of Spoonful (which is a masterpiece in of itself)! After the final verse -they go into this amazing jam (Eric sounds a tad like Leslie West here-but only for a few bars) At 15:20 Jack’s bass goes thin and half signal-did a speaker blow, was it in the recording? It soon recovers around 15:30 and on…as the wind-up jam gives us more of what we like - a totally tuned in, power trio.

The Cream are the real band of artist and musicians. Hendrix; Doors; Elvis... They´re only artist.

Forget about EC v JH. Cream were not just about EC. Three guys of equal calibre - don't forget Jack and Ginger. As much as Hendrix was godlike - his partners were not - so it was a genius supported by two adequate side men. Cream were three gods - three equals.

I realize I'm chiming in a bit late on the Hendrix vs. Clapton debate, but felt compelled to put in my two cents worth. "The best" is who each person thinks is "the best" and really translates to "my favorite". Clapton's work on "Crossroads" is my favorite (live) guitar performance ever. On the other hand, I like Leslie West's playing in general more than anyone else's; but I would never go around saying either Clapton or West was "the best".

LOL every time Cream of Jimi get mentioned it re-ignites the whole Hendrix vs Clapton thing. And that's good! Nothing wrong with a bit of honest debate. Eric just edges it for me - mostly on the basis of this song! IMO the live versions of Spoonful are just about musical perfection, a jam that has never, NEVER, been equalled. On the subject of Hendrix/Cream, here's one for ya: How about Mitch Mitchell vs Ginger Baker?

@owensp001 With clapton it's pretty obvious to me that to play the Blues you only need to PLAY with passion, Blues don't care if if the player cares or not. Also, his experimentation was constant but he just didn't break that barrier like Jimi did. Jimi's blues are typically misunderstood by more conservative ears, thank you.

@Purplexi to play the blues you have to have passion simple as that... as for hendrix vs clapton the two were pretty dissimilar... clapton did not stray too far from the blues whereas hendrix is known for his rock experimentation
@JamesBBrattenDDSSmyrna15 жыл бұрын
never heard eric play that way...he sounds like hendrix towards the end...better than hendrix i must say. wow.

What have skin colour and musicianship to do with each other? Do you mean: Classic music for Whites, Blues for Blacks etc.? Then I think you have com a few decades too late … Besides: I think that, on their respective artistic climax, both Hendrix and the Cream had not that much to do with Blues anymore. Their roots were in the Blues, but later on they rather made a fusion of Blues, Jazz and Rock. They were innovators, not conservators.
@Purplexi15 жыл бұрын
Clapton better than Hendrix?? How so? I mean, yeah, the guy(EC) was a blues afficianado but we're talking about a bunch of Brits playing cowboys and Indians. Jimi came up from the actual blues cirquit, and besides being a blues afficianado himself, was actually black, not just emulating it, so c'mon!
@duckman53113 жыл бұрын
If you believe that Eric Clapton is better than Jimi Hendrix, then you don't fully understand the artistry of Eric Clapton.
@Purplexi15 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying that white men can't feel or ape an art rooted in African-American culture. I'm just saying, Clapton is not better than Hendrix, as a physical player or as an icon in electric guitar history. He managed to outlive Hendrix and his parts are easier to learn, understand and sell.
@jp171315 жыл бұрын
better than jimi??? clapton's got his place in history, but c'mon, even srv ran circles around clapton...
