This was the most straight forward tutorial that I have seen. Thanks.

Thanks. A few years ago I was introduced to an app that charged a subscription to basically do what you've just shown me on Google Earth.

A postscript; When you download gpx files from other users on strava (either as a pro user or via the mapstogpx tool mentioned below) Strava strips out all the time stamps for the points along the path so you can see the path, but you dont know how fast they were going at any point and Google Earth wont "play" the file as a flythrough tour. A solution to this is to open the gpx in GpsTrackEditor. This software will ask if you want to fudge some timestamps at a constant speed. Then just save the file and open it in Google Earth. The tour will play at the constant fudged speed, but at least it will play.

This would not work for me until I checked the "Fly along lines" box on the Touring tab.

Google Earth seems to change the way it handles this type of data on an irregular basis. I need to make a revised edition!

If you go to the Edit menu in Google Earth while you have your file open, and select the Show Elevation Profile it will show the graph of your speed, elevation, temperature and Heart Rate (if in your GPX file).

Need some enlightenment here. When I record it as tour, it did not play smoothly. The 'arrow icon' is as if unable to catch up with the speed, as if it's stuck. I have to stop the tour, then it will catch up. But later on it happens again. This is annoying me as I'm trying to record a video that the route plays smoothly. And all I get is pause, rewind and play. Worse, I have to use screen recording to record my tour then edit on premiere pro! I will upload the error. I appreciate any feedback at all.

Sounds like either a computer speed issue (maybe caused by something else running in the background) or erratic time stamps in the original file. Try opening the original file in a text editor and look at the time for each point along the path.

No. The bike computer gets position from an internal GPS and records all the data to an internal memory card.

I wish there was a way to do this with street view.

For those who want to do this but aren't premium members on strava.com. This tool mapstogpx.com/strava/ allows you to export GPX data directly without being a premium member and works in all browsers.

Hi Nick, nice video, good lesson, how come you have a blue line running, is this an option in the programme? If I load a kml/gpx file it shows a line from start till the end. When I play a tour camera is moving along the route but not a running line like you have. Any ideas?

Very interesting video, thanks for sharing. I was trying to replicate the same tour using a track in google earth but i see the line track all the time and not like in your video , it shows blue as you continue the tour. Do you know if i need to set something in specific to see this efect? Thanks again.

If only it looked like this on mine. Mine just slams the camera right on the ground, lifts up to the next point and slams into the ground, on every single point. It's not following a smooth path, nor is it elevated at all. I managed to add elevation data to the GPX file - but it made no difference. This wasn't a Strava GPX file, it was created by saving a route from Google Maps then using an online tool to convert that to a GPX file, then I used another online tool to add the elevations to it. Really, it shouldn't need the elevations I guess. I'll add time stamps with GpsTrackEditor then I'm giving up trying to do it! EDIT: Nope. It's flying along now, but it's still slammed to the ground. EDIT 2: I reset everything in Google Earth, still the same.

Lots of people have reported different behaviour to mine. I'm not sure if that is due to changes in Google Earth or Strava or both. I need to make an updated video!
