This is a work of total genius. I've learned everything I know about Siril from your previous videos but I think this one takes the biscuit!

I don't know about genius, but thanks for that! Extremely happy to hear that the channel has helped you! Thanks again!

I liked seeing this technique. But I still prefer to save the starless file in tif and work with the masks in Darktable. Masks in Darkatable are extremely configurable and can be drawn in vector, defined by parametric functions, or a mix of the two. And the best thing is that we can open, use and save a 32-bit tif in Darktable (try it! you'll love it.).

Thanks! I'll have to take a look at that. Thanks for the tip!

The Master of Siril! I have been looking for something like this. I am a total noob in PS and if I can do most of my post-process in Siril I would be so happy. Because Siril is easy and for someone with the knowledge like this, you can really do great things with Siril.

Great video Rich, thanks! A masking function is something that Siril is sorely missing. Hopefully it won’t be long before the developers implement it.

@@DeepSpaceAstromy first thought was why not just select the subject, make everything black, and with subject still selected give it fill 65535. My tests of this are not working out though as the subject mask is not blending well with the starless.

I've never thought to usethe luminance layer to create a mask, I've always fought against the RGB set and never reached satisfactory results. Thanks so much!

I like your clear speaking (I have hearing loss) and generally clear instructions. But occasionally, I can't see what controls you click, such as @2:55, "If we come over into the process directory ..." I don't see how you did that.

Meant to add linefeed above to continue -- Your method should help with my Seestar photo of M42 & NGC 1975, where the Running Man needs brightening. But I don't see how to enhance the arms of M81 without blowing out the core except in Photoshop with a mask.

Sorry, meant to say the working directory.

Yeah this is close as we can get with masking in Siril right now. PS is probably your best bet.

clever! i’m still learning as much about siril as i can after many years just using photoshop. does doing this entirely within siril offer any particular advantages over doing it in another program like PS or Pixinsight? or is this mainly for someone who doesn’t have access to those paid programs and wants to stay as much within siril as possible? thank you for sharing this!
@DeepSpaceAstro11 ай бұрын
I think there are. Siril is designed for processing astro images, so it's purpose driven. Same goes for PixInsight. I feel programs like these make the whole process easier. There's nothing wrong with using PS or GIMP though. Whatever gives you your desired results and you're comfortable using. I still do final touchups in PS as part of my workflow.
@jmlogan0111 ай бұрын
It looks like the most awkward part is editing the L.fit mask file using the limited photo manipulation tools in Siril. Why not edit it in a differnet program? I think that GIMP can edit FIT files, or convert to a TIF and edit in photoshop before converting back to FIT.
@DeepSpaceAstro11 ай бұрын
You can. This was just showing a way to do it in Siril.

Thank you, that was really helpful! Is there a way to use this method to dim a bright part of an image (for example the core of M31 or M42)... would it be a case of making the k value low like 0.01?
@DeepSpaceAstro10 ай бұрын
You're welcome! Possibly, but I honestly haven't tried so I'm not sure. I'm thinking it would dim it, but not necessarily reveal the details.

Could you not save the starless file as a tiff in Siril and do the mask in photoshop and then move it back into Siril and resave it as a 32 bit tiff?
@DeepSpaceAstro11 ай бұрын
You can. This was just to demonstrate a way to do it in Siril.

I just discovered Siril last year and have used your Raw to Finished video to learn. Now with Starnett in Siril I just followed your steps to take the starless image into Photoshop and that really was a real eye opener for me. I am glad to hear that the same can be done to create a mask. @@DeepSpaceAstro

Hey RIch, how do you gain more disk space on siril? Mine says 50gb even though my computer has 570gb free storage. I have deleted old process' and everything but doesn't seem to change the amount of disk space on siril. It won't let me run my next process due to this issue. Any thoughts?
