Just finished my first rug Lora. Going to scotch guard it and hopefully send you a photo. I think this was one of the most fun and satisfying crafts I've ever done. Lora, I’m confused about round 10. From your chart, that center stitch should have two stitches in it, but you removed the marker, and I don’t think you put two stitches in it. Did I miss something? Is the red 2 just for crocheting? These really are the best videos for explaining this method. Investors watched plenty, and they all make the process look so clumsy, and are not nearly as clearly demonstrated. Thank you!

Hello Lora I just found your channel and I love how you have a method to increasing your rug on the ends. Years ago I bought a rug tutorial from Aunt Philly's, and it was not explained good enough on where to make the increases like your video has, so thank you for that! I also wanted to ask about the tension your using for each stitch...I'm noticing how loose your stitches are, and how big the holes are as you go around, but on your first rug for the baby's room it looks a lot tighter. I don't like the look of bigger holes, and wondered if you could explain this? I know you can't pull it too tight as the needle will be harder to get through as your doing each row. I just thought maybe explaining the tension would be a great help...Thank you!
@RagstoRugsbyLora Жыл бұрын
Hello, Karen! I am sooo happy you stumbled on our channel & our videos! The technique we teach for increases will work every time regardless of the size rug you set out to create! Toothbrush AND Crochet!! The only thing that varies is the # of foundational chains as that will dictate the overall finished size of your rug! (Subtract desired width dimension from your desired length dimension = # of foundational stitches). From there you will follow the pattern on our cheat sheet!! To your question: My stitches were kept loose & more open for the video than I normally would. Like you, I prefer my stitches more closed. I deliberately kept them more open so that it would be easier for those watching to see where I was inserting my needle & working the fabric. It's sometimes hard to see up-close work in videos. We're working to improve that with ours! So I opted to keep those stitches nice & open! Hope that answers your question! If not, please let know okay? I also hope you'll stay in touch!

@RagstoRugsbyLora2 жыл бұрын
Hello, Cathy! That's a really great question & one that is asked often not only with our Toothbrush/Amish Knot rugs, but with Twine Woven & Crocheted rugs as well. ALL fabrics can be used in rug-making & I have used just about every kind there is - stretchy & non-stretchy. But with stretchy fabrics comes a common challenge ... controlling tension. The stretchier the fabric the harder it can be to control the tension. However, don't let that dissuade you from using your rolls! Lucky you that you have some to use in your rug! I'm guessing that they are bias cut fabric rolls (like we sell in our company). Bias cut fabrics will have some stretch to them but shouldn't be an issue in your rug. Just be attentive to your personal stitch gauge & not pulling the fabric too tightly as you progress through your rug. The stretchier the fabric, the harder it can be to control tension particularly for beginners. Practice is the key to consistent tension! I have been "practicing" for 30+ years now!! LOL We have a video on this channel on your "personal stitch gauge" you might check out! And you might also check out our website for many more fabric rolls. 16 new exciting colors are due in next week!! www.ragstorugs-bylora.com/ Hoping this helps & that you will stay in touch! @RagstoRugsbyLora Жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out! You might try opening your stitches a bit more & "training" those stitches initially to lay flat! Straight pins help a lot with this. Those beginning rounds are the most important & sometimes can be the most frustrating. The outer rows become MUCH easier. PROMISE! It's okay to have the runner peek through! I choose a fabric that compliments the color palette of my rug! The runner adds to the overall beauty of our rugs! Hoping you'll stay in touch!

Hi, I have made several rugs, using thinner strips, having no spaces between stitches. I am planning a much larger oval rug for my RV, and am wondering what the pattern changes to after Row 12 single knots all around? On my previous rugs, I simply added an extra knot where there was extra space. In mine, you can barely see the runner strip. I also recently made one passing the needle through the main fabric loop to make the knots more straight, and causing a tighter weave. I don’t pin my rugs after the first few rows, but I do lay them flat on a tv table, and they never pucker. I also notch the strips as I tear them, so I don’t have to stop every time I add a strip. Most of mine are made from repurposed Men’s XXXL Cotton Shirts, which has the same look on both sides of the fabric. Thanks for your tutorial! Do you ever use different widths for the strips? I will be trying your pattern since I want a larger rug and don’t mind the spaces visible between knots.

Thank you, Lora! I get it! I don’t know why I haven’t seen your videos before. I am a knitter and have no problem reading patterns. I always make the project in my mind before I start, so I know every step. These Toothbrush Rugs I became aware of four years ago, when I moved from Florida to the North Carolina mountains. There’s a nearby Folk School that offers crafting classes. I decided I wanted to learn to make the rugs, but the weekend class, not including meals and overnighting was $350. for locals. So, I decided to just figure it out myself. I never learned to read crochet patterns, so I would rather continue the toothbrush style. My rugs using thinner strips take a lot of time and are dense, not allowing light to peak through the stitches. They are a multi step project, finding cotton men’s shirts to repurpose, deconstructing, stripping, well, you know! I am so excited to make a large oval rug for my RV living room. I am mostly barefoot, so it helps to help the floor warm. I like how you avoid the stair steps in the crocheted rugs, and understand the concept. Do you have a video demonstrating that with the toothbrush rugs? I have always used cotton, but will be using assorted gray bed sheets I am recycling due to pilling where my toenails snag the fabric. I won’t need to worry about the stair stepping with this one. The only thing holding me back was figuring out how many loops in my foundation row, and now I know, thanks to you! If you don’t mind, I would like to eMail you some pictures of my rugs. So excited this one will move along much faster!

I noticed on the rug you are working on that there are open gaps where you put your stitches . Do those gaps eventually fill in or does it stay that way when using a wider strip ? I also like the blue one hanging behind you . I cannot see any gaps in that one though. Is that because you used smaller strips ? It looks like they are thinner than the one you are working on now . You do make lovely rugs and I thank you for sharing and teaching us your ways. 😊💖
@RagstoRugsbyLora Жыл бұрын
Hello & THANK YOU for reaching out! And THANK YOU for your patience with a response. Your question is an excellent one! For the video demonstration, I deliberately kept my stitches very open for teaching purposes primarily. I've learned that it's best when recording to keep the stitches open so the viewer can easily see where the needle/hook is being inserted. For this reason, the "gaps" are more prominent than they ordinarily would be. As you are working YOUR rug, feel free to close the gap by adjusting your tension. Also, if the gaps are an issue for you, consider a heavier weight running strip or consider cutting your strips wider. I used a 2" wide running & working strip for the demonstration. Perhaps a 2 1/2" would work better for you. The blue rug was the first rug EVER that I made. LONG before there were patterns or KZbin videos. It was made from left over fabrics from my daughters (first born) nursery. I had made crib bedding, curtains & a rocking chair cushion & still had some "Honey Bear" fabric left over. I had seen a rug in an antique store & set out to teach myself how to make it. It is now 39 years old & has been used for all of those years. In time, fabric will collapse somewhat in our rugs. For that reason, any gaps will fill in! The rug is proof of how well these rugs hold up to the test of time. (Unlike me ... the signs of aging are VERY apparant! LOL) Hope you'll stay in touch!

Okay, I'm really really confused about what you did on round 10 ( timestamp 23:23). And I hope I can word this properly. You mark the center with a red 2 but I didn't see you put 2 stitches there, why? Or did I miss you doing it? And weren't rows 1+9 single stitch @ center? I will go back and check to see if I missed that little tidbit 😊
@RagstoRugsbyLora Жыл бұрын
Hello!! So happy you've reached out! Thank you for watching! Sorry for your confusion. I do feel you understand the concept of our pattern/cheat sheet. The red number refers to the "stitch most on center/on end". It could be a 1, a 2 or a 3. That number indicates how many single crochet stitches in that space. Round 1 & Round 2 is a 3 = 3 single crochets in the stitch "most on center on end". Rounds 3-9 + 11 is a 1 = 1 single crochet in the stitch "most on center on end" for those rounds. Round 10 is a 2 = 2 single crochet stitches in the stitch "most on center on end" for that round. Remembering of course what you do on one end, you'll repeat on the other end. Who knows? Maybe I did forget to reinsert my hook a second time. It wouldn't surprise me! LOL It's hard for me to talk & demonstrate at the same time!! So you may be right? The cool part is these rugs are SO forgiving!! If you miss a stitch, it's very easy to correct it! Thanks again for reaching out! Now you have me curious! I'll have to "take a peek"!! @RagstoRugsbyLora2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! So happy you "stumbled" on us!! GREAT question! Thanks for asking! The filling as you referred to it is called the "runner" or the "running" strip. In the video we used one of our broadcloth fabric rolls - 100% cotton, bias cut, 2" width continuous fabric. The rolls make creating the rugs easier because you have less connecting of strips. I'll provide a link to them below if you're interested! Unfortunately, you are not going to be able to hide the running strip in these rugs but you can make it less obvious by choosing a fabric that blends with your "working" strip. As an example, the rug I'm holding (that I made for my daughters nursery nearly 40 years ago) I used a blue runner for the center & border; I used a white for the band. I would not recommend doing double stitches. What will happen if you do is your rug will waffle and never lay flat. Always follow the pattern I teach. I WILL say that for the sake of the video & teaching, my stitches are a lot more open then I normally make them. A more closed stitch will help to hide the runner. But again, never completely. One other thought could be to use a wider fabric for your working strip. Keep the runner at 2" & move up to 2 1/2 or 3" width for your working strip. I've never done that but no doubt it would help! Let us know the result if you try that, okay? Thanks again for reaching out & your kind comments! Hope you'll stay in touch! I’m new to this and am wondering about fabric: you are using fabric with pattern on both sides. Does the rug look different if the fabric is printed on only one side? Thanks.
@RagstoRugsbyLora3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, Lori! My favorite fabrics to work with are those that both front & back are the same - broadcloths, flannels & batiks for instance! :) However, print fabrics are really good too. If the backside isn't printed & you don't want that side to show, you simply need to turn the fabric as you go. Kinda like bias tape, I turn both sides in as I'm working it. It takes a bit longer especially at first, but it goes faster with practice! And there are some REALLY beautiful prints - both off the bolt & recyclables (bed sheets & duvets!!) - that work up really well in our rugs. Thanks for reaching out!

Can you wash the rug in the washing machine?
@RagstoRugsbyLora2 жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, they CAN. However, that said, I highly recommend washing by hand as opposed to in your washing machine or a commercial washer. The agitation of your machine is really hard on the rug fiber and larger rugs particularly are hard on your WASHER! Fill a bathtub, utility sink or wash basin with warm water & a mild detergent. Let your rug soak in the water for a few hours. Push the water through the rug (roll up your pant legs and walk on the rug - works wonderfully!), rinse several times and let drip dry. Pick a warm, breezy day and lay your rug flat to dry on a deck, patio or driveway, shaping as necessary. Decks work great because the air circulates around the rug drying quickly. Turn over. Once the rug is thoroughly dry spray with Scotchguard! This product is AMAZING! It not only repels against water, stains & debris, but it ALSO protects against sun damage and actually conditions the fiber! You'll find using Scotchguard, that you won't need to wash your rug nearly as often! Repeat this process each time you feel the need to wash it! @RagstoRugsbyLora2 жыл бұрын
Hello & Happy Friday to you! You didn't miss it in this video Gail. In looking back, not sure why we didn't finish the rug off. The way I finish my rugs is to determine a stopping point. I generally end my rugs in a corner as it is generally less obvious there. Insert the needle in the back of the next stitch. Next, feed BOTH the running & working strip through your needle & then weave the fabric strips back & forth through stitches on the reverse side of your beautiful rug to secure them. By weaving back & forth several times, there should be no fear of those stitches working their way out! Hope that helps & THANK YOU for reaching out!!

Hello! Using your toothbrush needle, slip it into the next stitch. Weave it into the stitches on the back side of your rug. I recommend going 6 stitches one direction, 6 stitches back toward you, and once again 6 stitches the opposite direction. This will help "lock in" the fabric without fear of it coming out. Hi How van i do différaient size
@RagstoRugsbyLora10 ай бұрын
That's one of my absolute favorite questions to answer! You can use our pattern (cheat sheet) for ANY size rug!!! When making a different size rug, simply subtract that rugs finished width from the finished length! The difference is the number of starting chains! From there follow the pattern on our cheat sheet! As an example, let's say you would like to make a long, skinny hall runner that is 18 x 56". 56 minus 18 = 38. Your starting foundational chains is 38! From there you'll complete 9 rounds to arrive at the 18 x 56" rug!

@@RagstoRugsbyLora That was helpful. Thanks. In trying out your technique, I have figured out why the working fabric gets a twist in it, but (like you) I can't figure out how to prevent it. Oh, well. I can certainly see the benefit of using batik fabrics since they are the same intensity of color on both sides as well as the benefit of using bias cut fabric so there aren't threads raveling all the time. I'm doing neither, however, and my rug is coming out great. Things to think about for the next one. ;-) I agree with all the other comments I've seen that you are a great teacher. Your explanations are clear and simple, and they include the reason why or why not to do a particular thing. I like that you speak slowly and clearly, I don't have the least bit of trouble understanding what you are saying. @RagstoRugsbyLora3 жыл бұрын
Hello!! Good question! We have an (older) video on weaving in the ends. Kinda grainy though! We are in the process of producing a newer one. You might watch for it! I generally use a safety pin to weave in those tails. Insert the safety pin in the back of the next stitch. Turn your rug over and weave the tail through 6 or more stitches in one direction. Turn & weave the tail through 6 (or more) stitches the opposite direction. Snip the tail at its base. By going 2 directions, the fabric will be secure with no fear of coming out. Do the same thing with your beginning tail.

Good Question!! In Toothbrush (Amish Knot) rugs 1/3 of your fabric is your running strip; 2/3 of your fabric is your working strip. 12 yards of fabric (4 yards - running, 8 yards - working) is enough fabric to complete a 24x34" oval rug. The running strip DOES show in your final work - just not as much as your working strip. But you should consider that when you are selecting your fabric palette! Thank you for reaching out!
