Materials I'll be using, including Winsor & Newton Designer's gouache paints, brushes, and Fabriano multimedia paper.
Palette: Titanium white, lemon yellow, yellow deep, yellow ochre, cerulean blue, sky blue, ultramarine blue, pthalo blue, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna.
Then, we'll dive into the painting process, starting with a rough sketch and establishing the basic shapes and values.

As we work through the painting, we'll discuss various techniques and approaches to help beginners develop their painting skills. We'll talk about how to use brushwork to create texture and movement in the painting, and how to use values and color to create a sense of light and shadow.
By the end of this video, you'll have a good understanding of how to create an alla prima gouache painting and how to apply the techniques demonstrated to your own artwork. So, grab your paints and brushes, and let's get started on painting this beautiful country road scene!

This was so enjoyable and encouraging even for a retired old artist who can no longer use real mediums. I can use Procreate and instantly redo a stroke a dozen times if necessary. I'm grateful to still paint at all. I have rarely been as free as you. You make it look so easy.

This was a great process video. Just watching others work is so valuable. I am starting again after a long break an still trying to find what interests me. Your work quite caught my attention. New subscriber now! Please include at the very least, a split screen with the active scene and your finished painting. I think that it would be additionally useful if we could see comparison shots maybe twice along the way, just to help us remember what you are looking at. I have no clue whether that is doable or not. I am not a Content Creator. Just a wish 🙂

Thank you, I have a few different brushes. Mostly I use a sable brush to finish. The bigger shapes to start come from cheap synthetic flats. I wish I had more sables though 😅

Hi Malcolm, Just renewed membership - love this gouache video. I would like to try designer gouache - don't even know how to begin. Does the class you referred to include surfaces, application techniques and options for framing finished work - I would prefer not to place under glass. What options and are they durable? Any help, any suggestions. Also liked your palette, can you treat Gouache pretty mush like one does with watercolor - ie. let it dry in a palette and reactive with water; yours looked pretty juicy? thank you.
@MalcolmDewey

Thank you, yes I cover all of that except for the framing. I have framing gouache without glass on KZbin in a couple of videos.

Thanks really enjoyed this demo. I have just started to experiment with gouache so this was timely. Did you use much water to thin your paint? Also what did you use to sign the painting? Thanks from a happy subscriber!😊

Thank you. Try to use just enough water to get a flow of paint, but not a wash. Layers are necessary much like oils so build up the lights wet over dry/semi dry paint. Signed with a rigger brush. This one a Daler Rowney watercolor rigger.

It seems that so much blue would make it hard to judge the painting’s colors objectively. a neutral color tape might be better.
