In this tutorial, we create a U.S.B. installer capable of bypassing hardware restrictions to install Windows 11 on an unsupported device, using an entirely free tool which requires no installation, and can be deleted after use. That tool is Rufus, and its latest version provides an all-in-one solution to download a Windows 11 .iso file, image that file to a U.S.B. drive and modify that installer to work with an unsupported device. The same technique can be used to create installation media for Windows 7, 8 and 10.
At the time of this videos’s publication, Windows 11 is incompatible with a very significant proportion of the world’s computers, given the requirement for T.P.M. (Trusted Platform Module) hardware, Secure Boot support and an 8 G.B. R.A.M. threshold. There are very good reasons for this, which we reference in the video. However, we wish to hold on to our perfectly good devices for financial and environmental reasons, whilst keeping our system up-to-date. We therefore take a balanced view when pursuing this project.
PLEASE BE AWARE THAT, IN COMMON WITH ALL PROJECTS OF THIS TYPE, THE CONTENTS OF THE U.S.B. STICK WILL BE FULLY ERASED AND REPLACED WITH THE INSTALLER IMAGE. YOU SHOULD THEREFORE BACKUP ANY IMPORTANT FILES OR FOLDERS BEFORE BEGINNING THIS PROCESS.
Please also note the messages toward the end of the video in relation to disabling Secure Boot and properly configuring B.I.O.S. for the installation.

Thanks for mentioning that @OGT YT. We take the view that if people are kind enough to watch the video and reach out via the comments, it’s only right to reply and offer assistance wherever possible. It’s also both rewarding and interesting to interact with people as they follow the content and try to work through issues as they arise. We’re certainly not critical of other KZbinrs, and it’s fortunate that this is a really small channel, which does allow for plenty of interaction in the comments. It’s really appreciated that you picked up on this, because we do treat building our community with great care.

Thanks for the video. Question - what does the last part of it mean, selecting the correct "bios"? Does this mean every time I boot up my PC I will get this message? Part 7.42 of the video.
@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Cinthya Ochoa. This might be a bit of a long explanation, so we hope you’re sitting comfortably… We’ll start with a little context. Once you’ve created your installation media (U.S.B. stick) as shown in our video, we’d imagine that you’d use it in one of two ways. 1 )..You could use it to update/upgrade an existing Windows installation, most commonly running Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10. We typically refer to this as an “update,” and it’s as straightforward as it sounds. Once the update is complete, your computer will be running Windows 11, but all of your previous apps, files and folders will be carried forward from your previous installation. 2 )..The alternative is to install Windows onto a drive which is either entirely blank, or will be erased in the course of the Windows installation, and we refer to this as a “clean installation.” Once the installation is complete, your computer will be running Windows 11, but it will contain no apps, files or folders until you create them. The last part of our video (around the 7:42 mark) describes what happens in a “clean installation,” so, if you’re updating from a previous version of Windows, you can disregard this section of the video entirely. However, if you are performing a clean installation, continue reading… When we perform a clean installation, we install Windows onto a blank hard drive, by transferring data from the U.S.B. drive we have created using the method shown in our video. When a computer boots, it will typically load data (i.e. Windows) from the main hard drive, but, in this scenario the main hard drive will be blank. We therefore need to instruct the computer to instead boot using the data on the U.S.B. stick. To do this, we need to use B.I.O.S. B.I.O.S. is the portion of the computer which you see between switching the machine on and Windows loading. More modern machines use U.E.F.I., but the old school term “B.I.O.S.” is still widely used. Typically, you’ll see a brief message when you power on the machine which will read something like “Press F2 to enter B.I.O.S.” or “Press DEL to enter setup” although this could be any key, and will vary between machines. Inside B.I.O.S., there will be a setting which determines which device your machine boots from, and this will typically be called something like “boot order,” “boot priority” or similar. Before we can install Windows using the U.S.B. drive, we need to rearrange the order in which the computer processes boot devices, so that it boots from the U.S.B. device first. We would then save that setting, and restart the computer, which will then detect the U.S.B. device and run the Windows installer. Once Windows has successfully installed, we would then reverse the boot order, returning the hard drive to its original status as the primary boot device. This is because, during the installation process, all of the files required to run Windows have been copied from the U.S.B. stick onto the main hard drive. At this point, the U.S.B. stick no longer plays a part in Windows startup, and can be removed. Having installed Windows, B.I.O.S. itself will once again be entirely invisible to you, with the exception of the first few seconds of activity before Windows loads. You certainly won’t be bothered by it once the installation is complete. Sorry if that’s an overly long explanation, and we appreciate that’s probably quite daunting to non-hobbyists.

I have managed one installation on a PC that worked. However, I have tried several times to install Win11 on an HP Envy 7265NGW but have been unable to either change the boot sequence ( I am not an expert in this respect) and failed. So when the time comes to boot it just boots from the install SSD. I tried to install from the USB/ISO as shown in you vid but it just comes back with the usual "can't install" message ( TPM & Processor). I'm sure I must have missed something in the tuorial.
@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Richard Bond. We’ll try to troubleshoot this for you. Our first thought is to check whether the installer is connecting to the internet and checking for updates. You’re typically asked about this at the start of the installation process. If it is, try to stop it either by unchecking the box or disabling the computer’s connection to the internet during the Windows 11 setup process. It appears that the setup utility is “phoning home” and will then correctly identify unsupported hardware. Blocking its access to the net prevents it from making these secondary checks, and might just allow your installation to proceed. If this doesn’t work, get back in touch and we’ll try something else.

Bro I subscribed your channel but one question what software using in this video is such amazing animated styles
@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Three Star Computers, and thank you for the subscription, which is very much appreciated. In terms of the software used in the production of our videos, we’ve recently moved from Magix Movie Edit Pro to Magix Video Pro X, which we use for 2D animation, as well as all editing and rendering. Whilst we acknowledge the popularity of Adobe Premier Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro, we opted for the Magix product because it involved a one-off payment, rather than an ongoing subscription model, and was reasonably priced relative to the functionality it offered. We do, however, take a hybrid approach, and the 3D animation work is handled using…of all things…Microsoft PowerPoint. Yes, you read that correctly. With some 3D models created using Microsoft’s free and pre-installed tools Paint 3D and 3D Builder, we can create some simple movements when using animations and transitions in recent versions of PowerPoint, with the Morph transition being particularly useful. Once we’ve created our animation in PowerPoint, it can then be exported as an .mp4 video, and imported into the Magix product for further editing. It feels a bit like cheating to use PowerPoint in this way, but it does offer some very interesting animation options. We also use Canva and Adobe Spark (both free online tools) for some of our text and image animations, again exporting as .mp4 and importing to Magix.

It works great! I've installed it on several machines without issue. I've checked the digital license that it activates Windows 11 with, and it's the same on each device 🤔. What are the risks of several PC all being activated with the same digital license?
@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix 2 жыл бұрын
@spillsndebris If your device has previously run a recent version of Windows, there will be a digital license associated with the hardware profile of your machine, and this license will remain valid whether you update or perform a clean installation. This might appear as though each device has the same license key, but it's the pre-exisitng license associated with the hardware profile which is significant, so you shouldn't experience any licensing issues in this scenario.

Hi @R HP. One of the points which we wished we’d mentioned in the tutorial and which only became apparent after publication is that it’s vital to allow Rufus to check for updates when offered. If this option is declined, Rufus will not offer the option to download .iso files directly from Microsoft, potentially requiring us to source them separately. This setting can be re-enabled by heading to the Settings icon (which is the third blue icon from the left of the bottom of the main interface, and looks like three horizontal sliders in various positions). From the dialog box which appears, set the “Check for updates” drop-down to “Daily (Default)” then click on “Check Now.” Once the check is performed, exit and restart Rufus. Upon restart, you should now have an extra option to “Download” accessible via the “Select” dropdown.

Hi @Lawrence Patricio, and sorry to hear your installation isn’t performing as expected. This doesn’t match our experience of Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, and anecdotally we’d suggest that Windows 11 performs identically to Windows 10 running on the same hardware. It might be that something specific to your device is causing the slowdown, but certainly we haven’t seen a marked performance drop-off on any of our test machines.

@@TechFixFlix installation went perfectly smooth. First boot went as expected. My system became sluggish when everything was setup and Windows, Defender, apps started making all those updates. And not to mention onedrive. My 32GB emmc started filling out. And my dual core was almost always at 100%. Don't get me wrong, the installation instructions in the video was perfect in bypassing the installation requirements. It's just that my system wasn't quite up to the challenges of running a full blown Windows 11 OS. So I went out searching for alternatives. I found a lite version of windows 11. No bloatware, no telemetry and I installed it purely as a local account. I took out Defender and just installed free Avast. The installation size was just about 3GB. Ram at boot was less than 1GB used. And everything was smooth and perfect. Enjoying it much. So, lesson learned, if you take away bloatware, telemetry and all the services that I don't need like onedrive etc, Windows 11 is a lean and mean os that my low spec laptop easily run. Really happy now. Thanks.

@TechFixFlix

Hi @Amos Kihoi. We’ve always maintained that this is the single most important question relating to this project, so much so that we specifically addressed it in this article: www.techfixflix.com/2022/01/updating-windows-11-on-unsupported-systems.html In short, the news is good, in that whilst Microsoft have reserved the right to withhold updates, they have yet to do so, and almost fourteen months after its release, we can still update an unsupported machine in exactly the same way we would a supported device, through Windows Update. If Microsoft are planning to withhold updates, they are being incredibly slow about it.

Hi @Ruben Sidranski. This is a topic which we regret not including in the original video…Once you physically insert the U.S.B. stick, options originally greyed out under “Target system” become available. The default is “UEFI (Non CSM)” but, if you change the “Partition Scheme” dropdown from the default “GPT” to the alternative “MBR,” the option under “Target system” will change to “BIOS (or UEFI-CSM),” and naturally this will be the appropriate configuration for your hardware setup.

@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix Жыл бұрын
Hi @directmusictv. You’re the second person to pose this question in the last ten days, so we’ve taken a little time to look into it. We’re wondering whether there might be a bug in version 3.19, which is the latest version available via rufus.ie. We have been able to replicate the issue you’re experiencing using Rufus 3.19.1911 Portable, and, in our testing, we were not offered the installation option for unsupported systems. Hopefully, this will be fixed in future releases. As an interim workaround, take a look at rufus.ie/downloads/ which is an archive of previous versions of Rufus. We know that version 3.17 works as shown in our video, having tested it today, so we’d recommend downloading the portable version at github.com/pbatard/rufus/releases/download/v3.17/rufus-3.17p.exe and avoid the temptation to update to 3.19 when offered at startup. This will allow you to follow the tutorial as we originally presented it.

Hi @Lee Nguyen. We’ll split our answer into two parts here. In terms of your U.S.B. port, the first thing we’d do is test whether the port is functioning at all. There are plenty of devices which are activated by U.S.B. power, like fans or lights etc. If you have anything of that type, try plugging it into the port to see if any power is delivered. If not, it might be that your port or motherboard has (partly) failed, which would be the worst-case scenario. It might also be worth checking in B.I.O.S. just to see if the port has become disabled for any reason, although this is unlikely. Whilst also unlikely, this could equally be an issue for Windows, so have a look in Device Manager to see if you can find anything. To access Device Manager, simply click your Start button and type “Device Manager” then press Enter. There should be a group called “Universal Serial Bus Controllers.” Click to expand that group. Check to see whether there are any yellow triangles next to devices, which indicate problems. Right click any problem device, and see if any of the options presented can rectify your problem. For example, you might be able to update the driver, or uninstall then reinstall the device. Turning to the second part of our reply, as your comment was left on our Windows 11 U.S.B. Installer video, it might be worth mentioning that you don’t actually need a U.S.B. drive to complete the tutorial if you’re updating an existing Windows 10/8/7 device. As we mention in the video, we create an .iso file which we subsequently write to the U.S.B. drive. However, you don’t actually need to write the file to the drive, and can simply launch the .iso file from your hard drive, cutting out burning to a U.S.B. stick and installing using the .iso as a virtual disc, operating in much the same way as a D.V.D. Naturally, this will be an update rather than a clean install. Once you’ve updated to Windows 11, it the new installation might also reactivate your left U.S.B. port, if it’s purely an issue for the Windows driver. If the problem remains, it might well be a hardware issue. Hope you make some progress with this.

I have a few questions. Will you have errors when you download Windows 11 on Unsupported Device and will your pc be slower?
@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix 2 жыл бұрын
These are important questions @Kiur Kond. In our experience, the news here is good. We’ve tested this on multiple machines, and our experience suggests that performance on Windows 11 is directly equivalent to Windows 10 on the same hardware, without generating errors or introducing slowdowns, so the very least you should expect is a level of performance paralleling that you would see with Windows 10. We also strongly recommend following the steps shown in our video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hILMfGeklMR7jNk in which we create a full system image of our existing Windows 10 installation. Having a full system image means we are in a position to roll back to Windows 10, should we be dissatisfied with Windows 11 for any reason. One related question is whether unsupported machines will receive updates via the normal Windows Update channel, and we’ve covered that topic on our web site: www.techfixflix.com/2022/01/updating-windows-11-on-unsupported-systems.html

Hi @Michael Asare. We used Rufus version 3.17 in our video, and, as you’ve noticed, there have been significant changes to the user interface since then. The positive news here is that whilst Rufus 3.20 introduced these changes, the functionality shown in our video remains present, but is now accessed via a different route, and the key is to click the “Start” button in the lower part of the main window, at which point you will be offered the customisation options which were previously accessible as shown in our video. Alternatively, if you’d like to follow the process exactly as shown in our video, you can still obtain version 3.17 from the Rufus archives, which you’ll find at rufus.ie/downloads/ Avoid the temptation to update to the latest version when offered at startup.

Hi @Rafael Rivera. We’d suggest downloading the latest portable version of Rufus from github.com/pbatard/rufus/releases/download/v3.22/rufus-3.22p.exe and run the application. The latest version of Rufus employs a significant change when compared to the version shown in our video, in that once you’ve selected your installation .iso, the next step is to immediately click the large “Start” button at the bottom of the main interface. Clicking this button will offer crucial options to bypass T.P.M., Secure Boot and 8 G.B. R.A.M. requirements. We are intending to publish an updated video to demonstrate these changes to the method in the near future.

Okay after searching around I found a way that it will install on any computer and in any way you want to install it. You need to get both iso files online. One for windows 10 and one for windows 11. You then edit the windows ten file with a file you extract from the windows 11 iso. You delete install.esd file from the windows ten iso then copy in the install.mib file from the windows 11 iso to the win 10 iso. You then use the win 10 iso to do the install for you. It will say that it is installing windows 10 but it will be really installing the windows 11 install file to your machine and it will never check for any unsupported hardware at all. This works perfect for either a new full install or an upgrade install so you can keep all your current files from win 10. This is the sneaky way of doing it but it works flawlessly.

Absolutely @Inky Doggy. This method essentially piggybacks upon the Windows 10 installer to deliver a Windows 11 payload. It’s sneaky, and we like it. If you’ve reached the point of deploying these tactics, you really are showing the kind of determination which should be applauded, and which also brings into question why Microsoft introduces restrictions at all.

Hi @Inky Doggy, and nice to hear from you again. The U.S.B. stick we create can be used either to upgrade an existing Windows setup, or to perform a clean installation on an entirely blank drive. The only difference between the two will relate to activation where the upgrade route will inherit the activation status of the earlier Windows 7/8/10 installation, whilst you’re likely to need to enter an activation key when installing to a device which hasn’t previously been activated.

I tried to just do an upgrade on a windows 10 system drive and it will not work. I started the machine in Windows 10 then ran the setup file on the USB stick. I selected to upgrade the windows 10 drive with the USB software. It started up the install software but then told me I have an unsupported machine and I had to stop the install. It will only let me wipe out the entire drive first and put a fresh install of windows 11 on the machine as it is an unsupported system for Windows 11 to be on it. Any way to get around this setup on the USB to not check the machine first when you only want to upgrade? I would like to only upgrade my windows 10 drive and keep all my files and stuff I have been using for the last few years and not start all over putting things back into it.

Hi again. One thing which worked for us on a couple of devices…At the very start of the Windows 11 installation process, you’re asked if you want the installer to check for updates…Don’t allow this to happen. In fact, we’d recommend disconnecting any ethernet or Wi-Fi connection before starting the installation. It seems that the installer is “phoning home” and is able to to identify unsupported systems at this stage. Blocking this connection might let you proceed, and you can immediately reconnect to the internet at the earliest opportunity after these initial checks. We won’t claim this works in every instance, but it did resolve the situation for all of our machines which didn’t work immediately. Let us know how you get on.

Hi @Narendra Singh. Unfortunately the news here isn’t good. At the time of this reply, Windows 11 is incompatible with 32-bit systems, and it seems unlikely that Microsoft will ever release a 32-bit version. Whilst Rufus can negate the need for T.P.M., Secure Boot, and additional R.A.M., the one truly fundamental requirement for Windows 11 is that it can only run on a 64-bit system. Unless Microsoft reverse direction and release a 32-bit version, you can only upgrade as far as Windows 10.

@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Gary McCrohan. The modified U.S.B. installer will allow you to perform either an upgrade or a clean installation, and it’s very much a free choice for you in accordance with whatever best suits your needs. If you’d like to keep your existing apps, files, folders and some settings, the upgrade route will be the way to go. If you’d prefer to start from a blank canvas, then a clean installation will be preferable. In either event, we’d strongly advocate creating a full system image of your existing Windows 8.1 setup using the method shown in our video, which would enable you to immediately revert back to your current setup in the event that the update fails, or doesn’t meet your requirements. In terms of licensing, Windows 11 will recognise and accept your existing Windows 8.1 license, and update it to its Windows 11 equivalent and this will apply even in a clean installation scenario, because the Windows licence will have been associated with the hardware profile of your device.

@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Graham Howes. There were two things which we wished we’d mentioned in the tutorial, both of which only became apparent after publication, and one of which might offer assistance to you. The first is that it’s vital to allow Rufus to check for updates when offered. Furthermore…and even more likely to be relevant to you…Once you physically insert the U.S.B. stick, options originally greyed out under “Target system” become available. The default is “UEFI (Non CSM)” but, if you change the “Partition Scheme” dropdown from the default “GPT” to the alternative “MBR,” the option under “Target system” will change to “BIOS (or UEFI-CSM),” and we think that this configuration might be the one which works on your particular hardware setup. Hopefully this will work for you, but do let us know if you’re still struggling.

Hi @i Pancake, and thank you for your kind words about the video. You can use the stick in one of two ways: (1) If you’re looking to upgrade an existing Windows 7/8/10 installation, you can simply insert the stick and, as you’d correctly deduced, thereafter run the “Setup” file found in the root directory. (2) Alternatively, should you be looking to perform an entirely clean installation on a blank (or erased) hard drive, you’d need to temporarily set your computer's B.I.O.S. to use the stick as its primary boot drive. In this scenario, your computer will automatically detect and run the setup utility.

Hi @Harold Campos, and congratulations on successfully updating four “officially unsupported” P.C.s to Windows 11. We’ve talked a lot in the comments about what we perceive to be an environmental scandal which hasn’t attracted much attention in the mainstream media, specifically the built-in obsolescence of modern equipment, where companies are artificially imposing a useable lifespan upon their devices, effectively forcing users to update and destroy perfectly good hardware in order to stay up-to-date. In this case, we’re talking about Microsoft and Windows, but this is equally an issue for macOS, iOS, Android and ChromeOS, each of which eventually outgrow their hardware, and, whilst technology will always advance, we’ve yet to hear a truly compelling argument as to why a machine capable of running Windows 10 is fundamentally incapable of running Windows 11. Could it be that we have grown so addicted to free Windows updates that Microsoft are trying to break the cycle by forcing us to purchase new hardware, and, by extension, a new Windows licence? These are tough times financially and environmentally, and on both grounds we’ll continue to champion the value of existing equipment.

@@TechFixFlix thanks so much for writing back, and for making a good point! I guess tech companies want their devices slated for the e-waste above all! I wish things were still built to last! I think they call it 'planned obsolescence'... but I've been systematically upgrading old machines lately for cheap! I've also been preparing to get some older 20" imacs (found one of them in the trash the other day! It was windows and domain locked to a school, but I unlocked local acct and deleted the domain 'users' folder lol) to install a 64bit version of windows to boot into off the 32bit efi bootloader, since the apple app store doesn't have any compatability downloads, you can only download the latest version of an app that sometimes used to work on your OS but was updated and then nothing seems to install to the machine, so some people are saying the most viable solution is to install windows!! The one I'm working on now which I also painted sparkle purple, will also get a t9600 cpu like my laptop! I know mac os uses some hw acceleration for the animations when you minimize windows etc. but windows just added rounded edges overlayed on top of windows 10, lol. I fully agree they make their money from 'oem' Software and need to sell machines, period. It seems all so petty to us but there's some suits in a board discussing just that very thing, as if their billions hinged on it! (In my case my favorite and most nostalgic pc game is from 2001 and the minimum system requirements are underwhelming, after picking it up again; I found that all my old computers were still waiting for me!) The crazy thing is when crazy inflations hit, and you have to buy old tech at a premium! I bought a 9" crt for $150 last month. A japanese ps2 for $120 last week! They were prime specimens, but still... This stuff easily goes for half that until people realize, holy crap this isn't trash.

You don’t need to enter your product key during initial installation, and, if you select “I don’t have a product key” at the “Activate Windows” screen, you’ll be able to choose to install any version of Windows. Assuming your hardware has already been activated with a genuine Windows licence, it will automatically validate an equivalent licence under Windows 11. So, for example, if you’ve previously activated Windows 10 Home on the same hardware, you’ll be able to activate Windows 11 Home. Likewise, if you’ve previously activated a Pro version, you should be able to activate Windows 11 Pro. This should be applicable to licences for Windows 7, 8 and 10. Even where the machine hasn’t previously been licenced, you should still be able to use Windows 11, albeit with some restrictions, and there remains the option to purchase a licence after installation.

Hi @Sean McNally. You didn’t mention the age of the older laptop, but the only absolute barrier we’ve encountered thus far is that Windows 11 is fundamentally incompatible with 32-bit systems. Other than that, you should have a reasonable chance of success with the vast majority of reasonably modern machines. As this project has been successfully reproduced by an overwhelming majority of those who have followed it, we’d be keen to see if there’s anything we can learn from the issues with your older laptop and your efforts to remedy it.

Hi again @Sean McNally. The oldest machines we’ve successfully updated using this method were Pentium-based laptops from 2008/2009, so probably contemporaries of your laptop. Like yours, they too were running Windows 10 prior to updating. As we mentioned in our earlier reply, the only machines which we’ve been entirely unable to update are our 32-bit devices, and this is entirely understandable, given that Windows 11 is a purely 64-bit operating system. Whilst it’s unfortunate that you’ve had no luck in updating your laptop, it’s great that you’ve extended its lifespan by migrating to Linux. We hope it will serve you well for many years to come.

Hi @Mostafa Morad. Whilst we have no personal experience of the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L, we can see that it’s a 2008 model, so we’d consider it within the parameters for onward updating to Windows 8/8.1, 10 and 11. Indeed, we’ve updated more than one of our 2008 machines all the way up to Windows 11. We’re wondering what difficulties you’re encountering when trying to upgrade, because the jump from 7 to 8 or 10 isn’t that great a leap, and should really be within the capabilities of the board. Thinking back to our updates, we’ve often found that attached hardware can be a barrier to upgrading, and often updating device drivers prior to performing the operating system updates, and even unplugging unsupported hardware can unlock previously unobtainable updates. Of course, as has been mentioned in other comment threads for this video, you could always consider giving the hardware a second life by installing Linux. Modern Linux distros still perform to a respectable level on older hardware.

Thank you very much @Mostafa Morad, that’s very kind of you. In terms of unplugging hardware, we’ve seen some very strange issues when updating. We had a desktop P.C. which wouldn’t update until the data cable was removed from its internal D.V.D. drive. We also had a tablet P.C. which would only update when its SD Card was ejected. Finally, we had a Vista-era laptop which only updated after we’d first updated each of its device drivers. One key conclusion when dealing with troublesome installations is to unplug as much as possible, and deal with them after a successful update. We have a few more videos which you might find useful at this point. 1 )..In “Backup Windows Hardware Drivers” kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKG6lI2Vl6-npLM we issue a single command which backs up all of your existing drivers. This can be useful if any of your device drivers are not replaced following an update, giving you an archive of drivers which you currently use. 2 )..In “Preparing For Windows 11 - Creating A Full System Image” kzbin.info/www/bejne/hILMfGeklMR7jNk which works for all updates, and not just from Windows 10 to 11, we freeze our existing Windows installation, allowing us to roll back to it at any time, complete with files, folders, apps and settings. This is a safety net which could prove invaluable if the update doesn’t go to plan, and allows you to experiment, safe in the knowledge that you can simply revert to your current setup should the upgrade fail or not meet your needs. 3 )..Finally, in “Driver Booster - Automatically Update Your Windows Drivers” kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIGqkqRunraBbJo we use Driver Booster to update all of our device drivers automatically. Although Driver Booster isn’t always popular (and you can read some of the feedback in our comments) it can occasionally find drivers which Windows Update fails to discover, and sometimes this can be the difference between success and failure when updating to a new Windows version. Hopefully some of this may help. We very much hope your attempt to update is successful.

what are cons (if any) of installing Windows 11 on a unsupported version of the os?
@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix 2 жыл бұрын
Great question @Taran Agnew. Our greatest concern for this project is whether Microsoft will continue to make security and feature updates available for unsupported systems. So far they have, and we’ve received around ten separate updates, but they’ve given strong indications that this may not be the case moving forward. That would potentially leave us needing to manually install in future, and, whilst we’d be happy to do this, we suspect that many people won’t, and we’ll need to find a straightforward solution if this turns out to be the case. Before we published this video, we quite deliberately chose to first publish a tutorial showing how to create a full system image, which you’ll find at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hILMfGeklMR7jNk and we did this to ensure that, should Microsoft withdraw updates or otherwise impact upon the functionality of Windows 11 on an unsupported system, we can roll back to Windows 10 and pick up exactly where we left off. Having this safety net entirely negates any concerns we might have in relation to using Windows 11 on a more experimental basis.

While I have OCD and always want my hardware to run the newest software it is important to note that Windows 10 is still perfectly viable, in both gaming and applications there isn´t really any huge advantage to installing Windows 11. Until 2025 Windows 10 will remain supported. Have tried the above method on two machines, only one of them offered a challenge in regard to Windows own security software, that was however fixable. As I do my work pro bono for elderly wishing to venture into the world of PCs and web browsing my usual methods are somewhat more foolproof. Hi @The Spark. We entirely share your O.C.D. when it comes to having the latest and greatest software on our devices, and we’ve broken many a computer by overly aggressive updating, which is why our videos always strongly advocate creating restore points and system images as a fallback. Your general point is absolutely valid, and where a user is happily enjoying Windows 10, there isn’t yet a truly compelling argument toward forcing Windows 11 upon them, and Windows 10 still performs entirely satisfactorily. Actually, this relative parity between Windows 10 and 11 makes the gulf in system requirements so alarming, and was a key motivation for us in creating this particular video, in which the essential premise is that where a machine is capable of running Windows 10, it’s surely also capable of running Windows 11. As for senior citizens and the unwanted consequences of their peculiar browsing habits…we’ll leave that good work to you…

Hi @Inky Doggy.The first question we’d ask is whether you’ve set your P.C.’s B.I.O.S. to boot first from the U.S.B. stick, because it may be defaulting to the main system drive, and, if that drive is blank, nothing will happen. So do confirm that your machine sets the U.S.B. stick as the first boot device. Other than that, do check the U.S.B. stick itself to make sure that the installation files have successfully copied. This shouldn’t be an issue, but worth considering just in case.

Hi @earthgrinder1, and sorry to hear this isn’t working for you. In relation to your second point, please be aware that, unless you make special provision, Windows 11 will replace Windows 10 on any system upon which it is installed. The only instances where this would not be the case would be where you have configured your machine to dual boot, allowing you to select which operatibng system to boot from, or you have installed Windows 11 as a virtual machine running in a virtualised environment. Unless you have specifically created one of these environments, Windows 11 will be installed over the top pf Windows 10, which you will no longer be able to access. There is an option to roll back from Windows 11 to Windows 10 within the first ten days of upgrading, although, for a longer-lasting solution, we specifically discuss creating a system image of your existing Windows 10 installation in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hILMfGeklMR7jNk You didn’t mention why it wouldn’t load on your desktop, but, assuming you’re looking to perform an in-line update, it should be a case of simply mounting the U.S.B. drive, then running the Setup utility from the mounted stick. Hi @Will Barger. This should work as B.I.O.S./U.E.F.I. settings shouldn’t come into play for an upgrade from Windows 10, in that you’ll be running setup from the Windows 10 desktop rather than booting directly from the U.S.B. stick. Once you’ve created the U.S.B. media, you can simply navigate to it and run the setup utility. Indeed, you could even copy the contents to your hard drive and eliminate the U.S.B. stick from the process. The important element here is that you’re already running Windows 10, so the upgrade path is more straightforward than a clean installation.

Hi there. As we mention in the video, this process erases the entire content of the drive, so first be absolutely certain that your 1 T.B. drive isn’t being used to store any vital files before using it, and that you really intend to use it for this purpose. We aren’t aware of any specific restrictions related to drive size, although we’d check whether the drive is appropriately formatted and partitioned, and can be straightforwardly accessed using File Explorer. Assuming this is the case, try clicking on the option to “show advanced drive properties” in the middle of Rufus’ main interface and tick “List USB Hard Drives” which may reveal your drive. Failing that, we’d suggest buying a comparatively small capacity U.S.B. stick. A capacity of around 8 G.B. should be sufficient, although capacitors that small are no longer typically offered, so you might need to purchase a 16 or 32 G.B. drive by default. Either way, these drives are incredibly inexpensive in the modern market, and would certainly cost far less than your 1 T.B. drive.

How do you do an in place upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 using the Rufus USB ?
@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix 10 ай бұрын
That’s a great question, and the answer is very straightforward. Firstly, create the U.S.B. installer as shown in our video (although do note that the options to bypass compatibility checks now appear only when you click the large “Start” button in the lower section of Rufus’ main interface). Once you’ve created the U.S.B. stick, insert it into the target computer and open it in File Explorer. Run the Setup application, which you’ll find in the root directory of the U.S.B. stick. This will launch the Windows installation process, after which you simply need to work through the setup steps. In practice, this will allow you to perform an in-place update, provided that you select the “upgrade” option, and choose to keep your files, folders and apps. Take care when making your selections to ensure you preserve those aspects of your current installation which you wish to retain.

There are no set rules here @speedbird8326, and this may well come down to your own personal preference. On the plus side, BitLocker will significantly reduce opportunities for data harvesting in the event that your device is lost, stolen, becomes inoperable or is decommissioned, encrypting the entirety of the physical drive. It is also fully integrated into Windows 11 with a relatively low impact on overall system performance. Conversely, that performance is increased through the usage of a hardware T.P.M. chip, and we appreciate that most people watching this video are doing so precisely because their machine lacks this very chip, without which there may be some increase in boot times, particularly when using non-solid-state hard drives. So, there’s a balancing act to be struck between data security and performance, and it’s up to you to identify your personal priority.

I have an HP Z440 - No TPM, AND UNSUPPORTED PROCESSOR, Is this video guide for my case?
@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @ Leonidas Savvides. Whilst we’re naturally unable to test on all hardware configurations, we’re inclined to say “yes” to your query. We believe the Z440 range dates back to the second half of 2014, and we’ve successfully installed on much older and less powerful machines (including some Pentium devices dating back to 2008). Looking at the spec sheet for the Z440, you should have a minimum of a four-core processor (rising to a maximum of eight cores). Our video is exactly the method you would need to bypass restrictions upon your unsupported processor and the absence of a T.P.M. If you’re tempted to give it a try, we’d recommend two more of our videos to provide extra insurance ahead of the installation. In “Preparing For Windows 11 - Creating A Full System Image” found at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hILMfGeklMR7jNk we create a full image of our existing Windows 10 installation. If Windows 11 should fail for you, this provides a full backup of your current Windows installation, to which you can return at any point in the future if Windows 11 isn’t working as you’d hoped. In conjunction with that, take a look at “Backup Windows Hardware Drivers,” featuring a single command which will export all of your existing drivers, making it much easier to locate them if needed. You’ll find it at kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKG6lI2Vl6-npLM

Absolutely @Gabryoo3. Where we select the option to respect the C.P.U. and T.P.M. stipulations, we effectively download the default unmodified installer, very much as though we had obtained it directly from Microsoft, and this version will naturally only work on machines which meet their stringent installation criteria. Downloading the version which does not respect these restrictions will open up the installation process to a much wider range of "unsupported" machines.

My question is why use win11 when there are so many Linux options available? Mint is a great OS. Lots of free software, and likely would run faster and better on an older PC. I have been using Mint for about 10 years now. You can even run many windows programs on Linux. No issues with viruses. Windows may choose to force some subscription fees and lock your system, like they did with the office tools. There are compatible free office tools for Linux.
@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix Жыл бұрын
That’s a perfectly reasonable question @Paul Smith, and we’re proudly platform-agnostic on this channel, taking the view that being proficient in multiple operating systems greatly enhances our overall experience of and comfort in our interactions with technology, which is why our channel has purposefully featured Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux. We’ve examined three specific Linux distros thus far, most recently elementary OS, before that LinuxFX and earlier still we looked at Ubuntu, so we’ve certainly given Linux some love over the years. Our argument in favour of Windows stems from its ubiquity. It runs on an estimated 75 per cent of the world’s desktop computers, with macOS taking up another 15 per cent, with Linux gaining just under 2.5 per cent. So it’s not unreasonable to claim that everybody uses Windows, and especially in business, with the consequence that the breadth of hardware and software compatibility is far wider than found on any other platform. As an aside, we were more than happily using Acorn computers in the early part of the nineties, but jumped to Windows when it became increasingly clear that “everyone else was using Windows,” resulting in Windows always attracting greater quantities of hardware and software at competitive price points. Just because everyone else is doing something doesn’t always make for a compelling argument, and we’re still hugely nostalgic for those Acorn days, but there’s a realisation that we need to keep pace with advances in technology, and sometimes there’s safety in following the pack. In many ways, this is still the case. There are many things which macOS does incredibly well, and you make a compelling argument for Linux…it’s just that Windows offers the best toys. None of that invalidates your question, or the rationale behind it. If you appreciate Linux, and can make it work for you, that’s absolutely great. The larger the user base Linux can attract, the stronger that platform will become. It’s not especially difficult to learn, and provides a strong counter in some of the areas in which Windows is weakest. As you mention, Microsoft are leaning ever more closely toward subscription based models for their services. We’ve always shunned this approach in favour of one-off payments or, better yet, entirely free options. Should this trend continue, we will join you in jumping ship.

@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix Жыл бұрын
Hi @Mr Bardel. Supplying your own image is an entirely sensible strategy, and we’d always advocate sourcing this directly from Microsoft via this link: www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows11 (follow the option labelled “Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)”). Alternatively, Rufus version 4.0 can source the image directly for you. To do this, click the downward pointing arrow immediately to the right of the box labelled “Select.” From the menu which appears, select the option labelled “Download.” The box which previously contained the word “Select” will now have changed to “Download” and when you click it, you will be offered downloads including Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and UEFI Shell options. Clicking “Continue” will present further dialogs which you should work through until the option to save the .iso image appears and the download commences. This isn’t quite the end of the story, because, in order to create a modified installer which bypasses R.A.M., Secure Boot and T.P.M. requirements, we need to access the customisation dialog, and the method for doing this differs slightly from that shown in our video. These options are now available once you’ve clicked the “Start” button in the lower right of the main interface. Once you’ve customised your installer, you can let Rufus create the installation media for you.

Hi @Deepak Singh Airy. We’ve used this method on 14 year old P.C.s running Pentium processors, so your machine is actually somewhat younger than that. As long as your machine has a 64-bit processor, there’s a reasonable possibility that it will work. Good content, but I'm confused. Why would anyone want to override the safeguards by MS and install an OS that will not be getting updates, isn't guaranteed to work, and has the potential of conflicting with programs over an OS that is working just fine, and getting all the updates and patches? If you're a computer nerd and want to do this for fun, OK. But for anyone else - why? I certainly wouldn't. The last thing I want is to have to deal with unexpected issues arising from doing this. Windows 11 has NOTHING that I need that Win10 doesn't have. So my question is why do this?
@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix Жыл бұрын
Hi @Spock's Brain, and thanks for your kind words about the content, as well as your thought-provoking question. So why should the average non-hobbyist consider taking such a risk to update a perfectly usable Windows 10 system? We’re not in the business of forcing a system update on anyone, and, if you’re happy with your existing Windows 10 setup, and if you view your P.C. as a productivity tool rather than something to be experimented with, that’s absolutely fine, and we won’t be applying any pressure to update against your will. Ultimately, it’s your P.C., you’ve paid for it, and you have the absolute right to use it in whatever way you see fit. We would point out that even an “unsupported” Windows 11 installation will continue to receive updates from Microsoft, and, whilst they have clearly reserved the right to stop providing updates should they so wish, the reality to date - and we’re now some eighteen months beyond the publication of our video - is that updates have been made available to unsupported machines on exactly the same schedule as officially supported devices. In terms of being guaranteed to work, we would suggest that any machine currently running Windows 10 will be able to run Windows 11, and we are yet to come across a machine which runs Windows 10 which fails to run Windows 11. Remaining with Windows 10 potentially presents two problems. The first is that it is likely to soon become a poor relation to Windows 11, as Microsoft ploughs its resources into its flagship Windows 11, whilst simply keeping Windows 10 ticking over for the remainder of its life-cycle. History would suggest that the next few years will see exciting feature development for Windows 11, whilst Windows 10 will be allowed to stagnate. The second issue is that Windows 10 will only be maintained for a further eighteen months, as support will officially end in October 2025. Whilst that seems a long way off, it does raise some of the very concerns you’re hoping to avoid by remaining on Windows 10, and your system will potentially be left without updates and patches in a year-and-a-half. By this point, Microsoft are effectively forcing us all to either update, or run the risk of using an unsupported device. Are the features of Windows 11 so compelling as to mandate this upgrade for the average user? We’re afraid we can’t make that argument. There’s very little practical difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11, and indeed we found it surprising that the bar to entry for Windows 11 is so high compared to Windows 10, when their feature sets are so similar, which provided the inspiration for the creation of our video in the first instance. There’s very little that’s truly new in the Windows 11 interface. In some features it represents a step backward - at least until those features are fully (re) implemented, and there’s nothing which Windows 11 can achieve which Windows 10 cannot. There’s nothing revelatory here, and, for those entirely content with Windows 10, there’s no pressing reason to update on the grounds of features alone. Prior to publishing our Windows 11 upgrade videos, we specifically focused upon creating a full system image backup (see our video on this topic at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hILMfGeklMR7jNk for details) and the purpose of this video was to preserve our existing Windows 10 installation to allow us to return to it in the event that either something went wrong, or we simply didn’t like Windows 11. For anyone who remains unconvinced yet curious, this provides a safety net by which you can run Windows 11 on your primary P.C., yet have the option to revert back to Windows 10 if you so wish.

So I wouldn't recommend installing it that way. It's not called unsupported for nothing. But I recommend installing a virtual machine first and testing it in win 10 and 11 and new drivers. But you can also work in all systems in win 10 as vm install with arm and arm 64 versions. My tip, because it says virtual machines are too slow to set the mouse pointer speed in win 10 and win 11 vm to 100 percent and a create manual virtual swap file in win 10 and in win 11 vm. also adjust the auto start apps in both and uninstall unnecessary programs. Adjust the PC for optimal performance. in win 10 and in the vm win 11. Some things are well explained in Tube if you can't find them. Defragment and optimize and delete all old drivers and win updates. I booted dual core processor with win 10 8 years ago from 2007 in 19 sec

Hi @SM orphin. We’re huge advocates of virtual machines, and we’re particularly fond of VirtualBox, which is a very capable free option. Indeed, we’ve published an entire playlist on this topic, which you’ll find at kzbin.info/aero/PL-rpUX02j1W4ipcWeg-5XjmFQgyrvTJQ- in which we run Windows, macOS, Android and Linux in virtual environments. As you note, this is an ideal testing ground for trying out new operating systems in a safe environment which will prevent damage to your main P.C. Whether you’re using a virtual machine or running on bare hardware, we’ve also discussed optimising performance in a number of our videos. From the topics you’ve referenced, we looked at auto startup apps in our video “Speed Up Your Windows Startup” found at kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3i9iZJ3qbJ3jMU and we took this to the extreme in “Clean Boot Windows” located at kzbin.info/www/bejne/eniViJp9h72MeLc. We also eliminated some of the bloat from our system in “Remove Windows Bloatware With Bloatbox” at kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4Oxeo2VpruEnsk. We covered freeing up drive space in “Free Up Drive Space In Windows 10” at kzbin.info/www/bejne/qobEoHicesSmmtU and updated drivers which Windows Update didn’t always identify in “Driver Booster - Automatically Update Your Windows Drivers” found at kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIGqkqRunraBbJo in addition to the more general update strategy outlined in “Update Every Device - Updating Windows, macOS, iOS And Android” (see kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKumqohuo899rc0). However, we can’t operate in a virtual environment forever, with the clock slowing ticking toward sunset for Windows 10. Of course, there’s no need for immediate panic, with the retirement date scheduled for October 14th 2025, and therefore still two-and-a-half years away at the time of this reply, and any user who is content with Windows 10 can happily keep using it without concern until that date. From our experience it appears that almost any machine capable of running Windows 10 can successfully run Windows 11. We don’t place great weight upon Microsoft’s categorisation of “unsupported systems,” which rules-out a significant portion of the world’s machines, with tremendous economic and environmental consequences which we’ve discussed at length in other comments for this video. We would certainly encourage anyone considering jumping from a virtual environment to their main hardware (or indeed anyone jumping straight in) to do so with relatively little fear, particularly if they follow our advice and create a full system image of their existing installation before proceeding, as discussed in our video “Preparing For Windows 11 - Creating A Full System Image” at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hILMfGeklMR7jNk.

Hi again @D J. We’d certainly follow your logic on this. how has it been in terms of updates and hard ware compatibility
@TechFixFlix
@TechFixFlix 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @kevin campos. This really is the key question for this project, particularly with Microsoft consistently indicating that it will not support “incompatible” devices. Whilst we’re naturally concerned that updates could be withdrawn at any time, our experience to this point has exactly paralleled that of our “fully compatible” devices, and we have been offered updates exactly when we would expect them. Taking a quick look through the Update History of the machine we updated in the first week of general release, we can see ten successfully installed Windows 11-specific updates in the past six weeks, which is very much as expected. In terms of hardware compatibility, we lost sound output on one test machine, but were able to quickly recover it by simply reinstalling the original driver. Beyond that, everything has been fine. You’ll find it at kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKG6lI2Vl6-npLM So, at this point, we’d get the backups in place and give it a go. Hi @Mohamad Wahba. In an ideal world, Secure Boot should be on. We’ve mentioned in the video and in the comments that the method we show deliberately circumvents requirements for both Secure Boot and a T.P.M., and this is essentially a last resort for machines which would otherwise be denied the opportunity to run Windows 11. It isn’t ideal, but Microsoft have ultimately left users of older hardware with no easy choices here. So, whilst we can work without Secure Boot, doing so creates a greater level of risk than using a machine which is able to implement it.
