Imagine a whole household made of programmable matter, as well as everything in it. If you ever needed to clean a room, you could simply melt it down into the floor and return it back to where it belongs. You could even melt furnishings and create more room in your house. Programmable matter could possibly become the most useful invention. That is, if we ever conduct enough research to develop it. Lets just hope!

You've got a point. If it's programmable, then a hacker could take control of your clay. While you're asleep on a claytronic bed, for a "Joke" he has the bed swallow you up and smother you. Oops. Or you just have a cantankerous kid, who tells your coffee cup to spring a leak while you're drinking. Or if the coffee cup could change into a gun and shoot you as you're drinking. Or somebody makes a pretty girl's claytronic clothing disappear. Or not even malicious people. What if the claytronic's power source dies out unexpectedly, so your stops working unexpectedly. Or it malfunctions and transforms unexpectedly. Or the claytronic science project you've been working on for your thesis disappears when your roommate cleans the room and all the clay is recycled. i love the thought of this stuff, literally the ultimate 'lego' so to speak, personally i would probably use it for testing designs, and otherwise just as a convenience item (I.E. oh no my door broke, i'll just make a new one) this has so many potential uses, i'm personally interested in seeing if it might be possible to develop different kinds with different capabilities, i.e. one that conducts heat/electricity, one that reflects light and heat, and one that acts as a general building block, so many possibilities

Hierarchy of functions is the main building block of our civilization. Guess these catoms won't be the only building blocks, but those parts which they will produce. Catoms enable 3D scanning and 3D printing on really _atomic_ level, so everything will become possible. Quite soon. Stay tuned.

How would claytronic items compare to the conventional ones- like, what would be their physical properties- tensile strength, heat resistance, etc. You may not want to make certain things, such as a claytronic hammer, screwdriver or saw, or cup, because they are not made of individual atoms, they are made of mini computer spheres, which can be damaged more easily. Or, what about a claytronic shirt, blanket, compared to a silk, cotton, or wool one?

This is pretty dark, but the first thing that came to mind to build was an assasin. If we take it that the tech has the extreme possibilities you're talking about, then...a thing that delivers a payload (which is essentially just a part of itself) to travel straight to the targets heart and stop it. Then exit the body and reform with the rest of the claytronic substance and become a rug on the floor. Under the dead body. If the particles are small enough then all this could be done without showing up in an autopsy.

I could sleep in my bed, sit in a comfy beanbag, and stay seated while my chair walks up and downstairs. I could make mannequins to practice fashion designing with! I would build programmable gun breakers and weapons breakers. Imaging how all the armies in the world will just loose their ability to use weapons. Some soldier for example wants to shoot but suddenly there is cloud of programmable micro flies appeared and then these flies penetrate into the gun and make all its gears not functioning. No wars, no borders any more, no terrorists, no crazy politicians. Just a peaceful life controlled by programmable matter. And you know what? I suggest you to read the book of Stanislav Lem "Observation on the spot", this concept was well described already in 60ies of the last century.

I would build space explorations devices on a space station to go out and visit different places to then reports back to earth. It could mold into whatever it needed to be at any given time. As for computerized intelligence, batteries and heat shields; perhaps it could carry these within itself and fit them in different places depending on the job it needed to complete. When in our physical presence, it could resemble man, when traveling close to a star it might resemble a space shuttle. On a quasi-habitat category planet it might resemble a '49er. At times it might resemble inspector Gadget even.

Imagine if you were injured and catoms could flow onto your body in the right shape to hold pressure on any bleeding, brace your neck & spine, and splint any sprains or broken bones. Even without the ability to reassemble into an object, this technology could still have some amazing applications: For instance, it could lead to an alternate (and possibly quite superior) method of 3D modeling. Instead of bouncing waves of sound or light off the subject and trying to recreate it by scanning (which I imagine has issues with "shadowing" errors on irregularly shaped objects), you flow catoms around every nook and crevice, much like a fluid going into a mold. Then a wireless server controlling the catoms would have access to super high-precision shape information that could be used as a master for 3D modelling of unprecedented accuracy. Combined with 3D printing, which we already have, this could be pretty important to making objects where a high degree of faithfulness to the original is essential (replacement parts, precision machinery, archeological artifact study, etc).

there was a small series written by Wil McCarthy starting with the book "The Collapsium" that was based on a similar idea of programmable matter and faxable matter. it has been to date my favorite science fiction novel on the subject and is based off of real quantum effects experiments with pseudo-atoms, FWthinking, and anyone else interested, should really look into the series

Startinbg at 2:2 that entire perocess is definitely not the copying off an object, it is copying the surface of an object. Not the same thing. However an object could be resonnance scanned (or whatever other 3D method) to get a 3D image if it's insides, with the density distribution and exact nature of it's internal parts, and then the programmable matter would just render that.

First thing I'd make with it? Money. xD Okay, more seriously though... I'd likely attempt to start up dirt-cheap manufacturing of day to day objects, which would cost less because the people involved in production would be less, and the supplies would be less varied and consumer-available. Consumers could technically make their own things, which is great, though I think the cost investment to get in on this early would be fairly hefty. So "if" you can slip in before it becomes really easy to get the technology to do it, I could see it being a pretty effective way to start up a business. All you'd need is putty, and artistic knowledge as well as ergonomic knowledge. Even if using this to start up a business is absurd due to quick consumer accessibility, it'd still be great to have. Rather than buying, say, cups I could just make my own. Which is brilliant because I'm terribly picky with what I drink my tea (Earl Grey. Hot.) in. I imagine this is the kind of thing which will sweep the market in much the same way as 3D printing is currently; putting the means of production back into the hands of everyday consumers is a huge step in the right direction when it comes to monopoly prevention. Of course, there's obviously the question of getting yourself a gun out of the putty, but when it really boils down to it, with something that complex (if you want the gun to actually be any good) the time and resources to produce it would likely factor out to be more than the money you'd need to spend to just buy one. Initially, anyways. I'm sure it'd become something worth serious attention eventually.

Let's say I show you a red ball. Light hitting the ball that is any other color then red is absorbed. The red light photons bounce off the ball and enter your eyes and trigger light sensitive cells on your retina. Now onto the catoms, I think that if you change the optical properties of them, then you can select the wavelength of light that is reflected.

I wonder if it'll be able to create life? Or at least replicate it? Cuz he did talk about that maybe he can create an image of his own/fax himself to give someone a hug or a handshake. So does that mean, it can make individual decisions even if its not really you? can that make clones too? its just really fascinating to think about it.

Instead of putting that chair you just "built" back into a vat for storage, why transform the chair back into a thing you use when you're alone at home? For example, your bathtub could transform into an extra chair, when needed. A philips screwdriver --> flat head screwdriver. This saves a lot of space because objects in your home are multi-purpose.
