Party finally got the attention of those a bit more powerful and a bit more evil. Love me some 'hired goons' but they're an evil rival party hired by a secondary villain. If the party is getting into industry, a rival company owner.

The dialogue format works very well. You flesh out the topic from two conflicting sides.

My players and I had a lot of fun with the motives with the initial combat encounter in Skitter Shot. The bots are trying to round up the PCs into crates as if they were escaped pets; so the PCs decided to smash the crates, rather than fight the robots. After a couple of rounds of this, I determined enough crates had been smashed that the robots fell into an error state and went dormant. "Must put pets into crates. Error! No crates found. "

Right? And this guy has an entire video catalog that amounts to a Master Class in how to play and run the game from the ground up.

Guy, thanks for all of your content! You definitely piqued my interest in DMing! About a third of the way through my homebrew campaign thanks to your advice!

I wonder if this is a matrix of Goal x Motive. So the NPCs could be trying to: Avoid, Rob, Interrogate,/investigate, Capture or Kill For: Reward, Opportunity, Loyalty/honour, Laughs or Survival.

Nice little list. I'd also add that it is equally important to vary the goals and motives presented to player characters (as well as those they come up with themselves) in encounters.

This dialogue format is like my own compulsive intrusive thoughts where I'm always arguing and justifying my positions with people in my imagination. Uhg... Great video though, very informative, I really like this "break things down into archetypes and use the archetypes" systematic approach. Making lots of broadly usefully GM tools.

This stuff also trains player *not* to be Killers (which sometimes does need a surprising amount of effort)

This is why being GM is great. You get to act. You need to put yourself in to the metaphorical shoes of the NPCs and understand each NPCs motivation. A wolf or a bear will not attack unless it has a reason; it might threaten is you enter its territory. A robber is looking for an easy mark - which almost never includes an armed-to-the-teeth party.

The bounty hunter's reputation is potentially at stake, not to mention their livelihood. How persistent and aggressive they are easily will depend on how successful they are in general (one who is generally successful will be more financially able to let a bounty slide to avoid risk), and what kind of reputation they cultivate - someone with a significant investment in "always gets their target" reputation is likely to be more persistent so they don't lose it, for example.

I dunno, most parties seem to be bloodthirsty. After they get what they want from the surrendering opponent, instead of letting the opponent go, they execute the opponent.
@johnathanrhoades7751 Жыл бұрын
Well, that gives them a certain reputation. “No one comes back alive” will engender bad blood in certain circles for sure.

The Bounty Hunter NPC could also consider themselves to be the good guy.
@lukekebell31462 жыл бұрын
Hear me out. This exact format but with the characters from the Circles of GMing. Different episodes/topics would focus on a conversation between Guy & one of them (& this character, why not lol) discussing the subject.
@freyaut Жыл бұрын
The main difference to me is that bounty hunters hunt down targets that are considered criminals by society. So it's "legal" for them to hunt down criminals guards will only interfere if the hunter commits a crime themselves.
