Thanks for this Daljit, that simple explanation of focus play focusing PASSING rather than RUNNING really helps me understand what's changed between 20 and 21. I knew it felt different, but couldn't pin point why.

This is awesome. I am just now learning how to think tactically about soccer and this game. This video helps a lot.

I never saw how FM does width properly. When I chose narrow I did it because I thought it would give the wings more room when they run wide. Not because my team will want to pass through center more. I love numerical overloads and avoiding one vs ones as much as possible. I want to create free man situations. I thought of the center as the most vital area, no matter how high or low on the pitch, that you always fight for, but don't dominate. That both offense and defense is about expanding and contracting at the right time and not allowing 1 vs 1, unless the opponent is bottom table quality. It's why I like a lower block and supporting strikers/ball playing defenders - numerical advantage in defense and offense. I have two men (in a 4-4-2) who are free to deny space/ double mark a midfielder, because they don't need to press the defender, but instead deny him his target, even if he can make the pass. The midfield can get very congested and messy, so when I know the ball will be there I play ballwinners, who take advantage of the chaos. I want constant off the ball movement, players moving away from the one who best makes use of the ball to provide passing options. So I thought winning was about having width and removing width to force a turnover. I hate getting pressed and losing the ball for it, so I want them to have to cover the maximum distance to close my players down. It takes one man and many runners to break the line, so only one man needs to be as free to move and think while the rest force space open. Same for scoring a goal. Never saw it right, I suppose. My only use of short passing was to force switch of play in a 4-3-3 Tiki Taka. We were playing short down the wings until the attacking midfield/opposite wing empty out for a quick switch. I thought that making my players come closer together only meant attracting more defenders centrally. I see that with the right amount of passing quality and speed of touch, it's possible to play through center more.

a question - i am trying to 'focus play down the flanks' - att width Wide....but my 'wingers' are playing with roles of Inverted Wingers .....your thoughts ? a good idea or not....i do not have natural wingers in the team and most opponents play with 1 or 2 DMs....and i prefer wide play....
@BusttheNet4 жыл бұрын
What focus play does is create overloads, essentially when you use focus play u will see more players making runs in that area to support play. So whether you use an IW or W doesn't really matter. Later today I am revisiting the Bayern replication i did for FM20 on FM21 on KZbin, and its basically just adding the focus play instruction to get the overloads that Bayern achieve which was rather difficult to achieve in FM20.

This is a more defensive question, but I am so lost. I want to try to emulate a very park the bus style, solid defensive shape and shifting flanks while retaining the line. I have my pressing to the lowest possible, but my players do not stop chasing the opposition players drawing out holes in my line I keep getting exploited through. Sometimes even 2 of my players will chase a flank player and I get scored on through a pass into the gap. (Actually what just happened now that made me write this) Its getting very very annoying, how can I stop the constant chase???

Is this how it goes? Overload a side with many support duties to release attack duty in the other side?
@irfanramli7294 жыл бұрын
Don’t get me wrong the video here spends more time explaining what is ‘focus play’ than actually creating overloads like the title. A little bit misleading on this one but quality content nonetheless Daljit!
@BusttheNet4 жыл бұрын
It creates the overloads.
@irfanramli7294 жыл бұрын
@@BusttheNet I would assume with my limited knowledge that it’s more than just chucking in an instruction. Player roles, formation and PPM’s (all wild guesses here) adds to the equation? I’m not hitting on your content here, I’ve been a huge fan of it in fact. But I just think the title feels a little click baity seeing at the end of the video, you’ll explain creating overloads on the next video. And lately it feels more quantity than quality? I’m sorry. Just my 2cents.
@BusttheNet4 жыл бұрын
You don’t seem to understand the video which would be my fault. FM 20 you create overloads with roles and duties. FM 21 you create overloads with focus play. Taking advantage of overloads should be the subject of another video. It is now an instruction.

Hey, does focus play still increase the players mentality on the chosen area? Or has that changed as well
@BusttheNet4 жыл бұрын
Focus play does not affect mentalities it only influences passes into an area

busthenet: dont focus play in the middle if opponent are defensively strong in the middle also busthenet: focuses play in the middle vs 5 at the back and 3 defensive midfielders

Focus play can be situational, how you take advantage will depend on you.
@jinyaotan11404 жыл бұрын
May i know if its actually ok to focus play through the middle while playing with a wider width? I thought maybe this willl encourage my advanced playmaker to spray passes out wide for the wide players to create chances. Or do i play with a narrow width here?
@BusttheNet4 жыл бұрын
Try not to atm, there is a bug now which makes the fullbacks get more passes to, so I would keep it on narrow width till they fix this with a patch in dec

I feel like it was too short, didn't see the real difference between FM21 to FM20 regarding this issue of Focus play There wasn't enough examples
@arpitrohilla2854 жыл бұрын
So apparently fm20 focused on the number and intensity of runs on that side of the pitch but 21 will look to pass in those areas more often. The underlaps and overlaps determined the passing in 20. I haven't played fm21 yet so I'm just saying what I inferred from this video
