Terrific video Coach. My ball striking and distance improved when someone described the golf swing as more of a SLING, not a swing. It just made so much sense. The lead leg is a brace but also a brake, in your example.

I watch way too many golf videos. The most BRILLIANT explanation it’s how to use the GROUND to slow down to gain the whip effect👍 that’s a key way to explain the importance of ground forces. I want to control tempo but never can. I see why

Can't wait to try when I hit he range tomorrow. Never Ever heard this. Picked up golf when I retired 8 yrs ago. Hacker to start but slowly improving. Used to slice constanly when swinging hard, but this winter in FLA started swinging left across my body. Working to correct that. Not a long distance hitter. At 65 would like driver to carry 140/150 in the air and also develop the technique for a smooth fairway swing to get ball up in the air instead of linedrives. Thanks!

Thanks for that. I had a few days recently when I felt the sling effect and I got 25 yards longer with 7 iron. Then it went off again. However seeing your point about pushing off the front leg makes we realise that's what I don't do.! I'm pretty sure I've been pushing off my back leg and probably why I don't turn thru very easily... Thanks! At one time I knew this stuff, but my intent has wavered and lost sight of these basics. I had immediate results by shifting my intent to the advice you presented in this video. The extra snap/speed certainly helped, but the lead leg push had the direct result of squaring the club face, improved compression and low point control. All that came free. Tks for bringing me back to a key and simple fundamental.

This video helped me immensly. I've always swung hard with my arms, but since watching this my feel has been to swing with the handle of the club and allow the head to whip through the ball. Not as good results with the irons as compared with the woods yet, but have increased driving speed by 4mph so far.

LOL… I never thought sibling squabbling would come in so useful for golf, but point taken Coach! It sounds counter-intuitive, but in terms of physics it makes a world of sense to get that energy out to the end of the club. We do the same thing with hammering nails, throwing things, chopping trees, etc… It’s like the good ole “Heave…ho…”. Of course…golf clubs are a little harder to control at times. Love this though!

Love this drill! I see so many people trying to “hold lag” or get the hands to the ball before the club head. By that time, it’s too late and you’ve hit a push fade. People don’t realize that you need the club head to pass the hands into impact for the most speed to be delivered to the ball.
@joshfuchs5411
@joshfuchs5411 22 күн бұрын
True to an extent but only with the driver. With most clubs if your club head is level with or past the hands you have early extension, which also loses you power for a number of reasons. Most clubs you want to be compressing the ball which means keeping hands ahead of the club head
@swardmusic
@swardmusic 21 күн бұрын
not what early extension is@@joshfuchs5411
@bertpainter8385
@bertpainter8385 18 күн бұрын
@@joshfuchs5411 Agreed! Irons should have more compressed hits causing back spin and elevation for softer landing. While driver and to some extent longer clubs want less back spin and more carry and roll for stock shots. To me, more lag is not necessary unless you don't have much. It just happens. That is for the average golfer who will most likely have problems trying to control direction if they try to add/hold lag.

There are a couple of holes at my course where it is easy to let a driver go. There are few occasions where I have used the fingers to whip through the ball rather than the arms if that makes any sense. When you do, this is such a massive difference in distance and power. I guess it does feel like the cracking of the towel analogy used here or is it something different? It’s a little bit confusing.

Timing the sling through impact is one thing, but control of the follow through straight line past secondary impact and front divot while not flipping left spinning sideways is more difficult, for me. Perhaps the body rotation needs breaks at posting and facing target as the lagrip slows to sling? 8:38

Awesome lesson. I’ve noticed you and most other pros have what looks like a cupped lead wrist at address, particularly with a driver. Is this so or is it just an optical illusion? When it comes to the moment of strike Hogan and many teachers online say the lead wrist should be bowed, but your wrists still look cupped (at least on your practise swing). What do you say to that Coach?

The start phase of downswing is just for creating a torque to squeeze the leading leg/leading pelvis/leading waist/lower spine to be aligned to the right heel. At the time when the club head moves against the target, club head speed is harmful But we raise the club higher than the shoulder has other purposes, one is to backoff the upper arm to be aligned with the scapula to limit the moving of the upper arm. The other is to rotate the forearm (actually is a upper arm side deviation)to keep the 'radius bone' at higher position than the 'ulna bone. This will make the trailng elbow not extendable before the grip center comes into the torsor area. Only when the grip center goes inside the torsor (the club shaft turns straight and club head starts to go forwad, the acceleration then because effective. Because the arms should be aligned with the abdominal muscle then we can coordinate both arms and create a reasonable differential acceleration contribution of each parts of arms section. As a general rule: the parts of arms more near to the grip should moved quicker and harder to drive the club head, so the effective acc. zone is between the the inner side of the legs that gear up the coordination.

As a general rule most golfers need to take it back faster, all golfers arent the same though, if taking it back slow still means you can accelerate and decelerate by the time you reach the top of your backswing its all good.

Do you intentionally add hand speed from the top of the backswing? For me the initial move of my hands from the top of the backswing needs to feel more passive (this promotes a smooth transition and more consistent impact) and then I intentially add speed as I approach the delivery position.

Thats not what I am saying in this video no. BUT if it works for you keep doing it. If you want more distance you might have to think about measuring and changing at some point!

It is basic Newtonian physics: action / reaction. 1) Hips accelerate dragging shoulder and pin lead arm around feet and gravity pulls arms and club down at 32ft/sec/sec. 2) Keeping trail foot grounded and shifting hips laterally creates resistance to hips turning more than 45° open. This is what slows the hands pinned to body by arms down at that point. 3) Club head mass reacts to hands slowing down but whipping down around hands. The more abruptly the hands slow down the faster the club will whip around the hands. 4) After this is triggered golfer must lift back foot to release hips to continue turning to prevent club head speeding past hands and clipping. 5) Side bending plays an important role here in changing shoulders relative to pelvis and the force vector of lead pulling the club. Club head mass wants to swing outside the ball, the mass of the lead arm made more vertical by the side bend pulls it back inside with the net effect being it tracks down the target longer and allows club to pull the arms straight. 6) Club whipping around hands after arms pulled straight helps pull club around back in finish. There is similar whipping around hands reaction in the backswing which generates force to lift arms and pull shoulders around hips if the golfer knows how to let the club mass fly and extend lead arm backwards long enough to react.

Do you really slow down or have a sequence to hit the brakes. Trail hip back, sit 45 degrees left, cross lateral brake. I don’t feel like I slow down anything my body is now reacting to the forces put upon it with no intention of controlling the club, just let it free wheel I a continuous circling motion, not a changing direction pattern. Thanks
