LESSON SUMMARY
The unique style of neo soul often presents a mystery to aspiring pianists. The beautiful and mellow sound of neo soul chords are paradoxically familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. That's because although neo soul chords originate from traditional 7th chords, they frequently include additional notes and are combined in innovative ways. In today's Quick Tip, you'll learn:
-The 2 Most Common Neo Soul Chords
-2 Chord Thickeners
-Connecting Neo Soul Chords with Common Tones
-Neo Soul Chord Progressions
If you like the playing styles of pianists such as Cory Henry, Jacob Collier and Robert Glasper, then you'll love today's lesson.

You are a godsend! About a year ago I bought a stage piano that has this Rhodes sound in it. Ever since I discovered it, I became hooked to the sound and my play style started developing more towards jazz and soul. I finally got hooked to the 7 chords, and started figuring out songs with more complex harmonies. I'm glad I discovered your channel, to help and guide me on this journey in my musical development.

What stage piano did you buy with the Rhodes sound in it? All I have are different electric piano sounds. I'd really love to get the Rhodes sound.
@UltraBeatZ
@UltraBeatZ 2 жыл бұрын
@@teflo2 If you have different EP sounds, I have a hunch that the quality of yours might be better than mine. I have only one EP sound which is named 'Rhodes EP.' The piano is the Midiplus Stage 88, which is a very cheap stage piano and midi keyboard with specs that are acceptable. For the price range however, it's probably one of the best you can get if you're on a very tight budget. It's around 300 bucks and still a big step up from the keyboard that I used to play. The quality of the rhodes sound is good, but the feel of the dynamics is very limited, due to the relative cheap quality of the piano. It still got me hooked on the sound tho :-) If you can afford better, I would suggest something like the Korg SV 2, which looks, feels and sounds amazing. It has several rhodes or EP sounds and a good response. If I could afford it, I would definitely buy it in a heartbeat. Then again, If I could afford real Rhodes, I would go for that.

@ravenmusic932
@ravenmusic932 Жыл бұрын
@@dyls6052 You think solely of the melody and then you get a little bit more creative about what could fit below it. Let's say you only have the melody notes e and f#. Something easy and solid below these notes would be C major and D major. But let's say the second note is the root note of the chord and you play it in 1st inversion, then you have C major and F#/A#. If you play around with that idea which builds from top to bottom, you will have access to a totally different set of musical language, I promise.

I understand the value in showing the music theory part, but neo is not a formula, the main thing that should be taught is the feeling as it starts there, cadence, timing, timber plus more have profound effect on the "neo-soul" sound and the feeling is what keeps its sounding real and not like just like a static peice of music. Its important to encourage that along side whatever theory is taught.

@danielvega71
@danielvega71 2 жыл бұрын
Theorically, 9 and 13 are "consonant" extensions of the major chord, and 9 and 11 for minor chords sound "idiomatic" of the genre, very characteristic. But of course you can choose whatever note you see fit - I mean, "hear fit"
@irProteus
@irProteus 2 жыл бұрын
@@danielvega71 Ok, but adding the 2 and the 6th (maj) or the 2 and the 4th (min).....is not the same. Adding the 9th and/or 13 to a maj. 7th is not the same as adding the 2 and/or 6h to the maj. 7th. Adding the 9th to a maj,7th has a clean, pleasant sound, unlike the muddy sound one produces by adding the 2nd to the maj. 7th. The same can be said for adding the 13th to the maj. 7th as opposed to adding the 6th to the maj. 7th. Same for the min. 7th. and the addition of the 2 and/or 4th. Playing adjacent notes produces dissonance and results in a displeasing, muddy sound.
