Stephen I’m not sure if you read these comments but thank you SO much for your incredible videos and constant encouragement! I picked up drumsticks for the first time over the pandemic and it has saved my mental health so completely. I am grateful for this soul-soothing instrument and for your incredibly talented method of teaching! You are a gifted teacher and just wanted to thank you for all of your weekly efforts. All of your pdf docs have been instrumental to my learning as well! -Big hug and a Hi-five from Calgary

Super lesson , I have always wanted a lesson on the endings of songs , my endings always centred around the six stroke roll ( fast ) using toms and snare but I love your Ideas , on getting away from the blur !! . Thanks Stephen .

I have a question about endings as a very green beginner. Are endings supposed to be on time or does timing go out the window at this point? Great lesson BTW.

It depends Rob. Sometimes yes. Sometimes we slow down a little at the ending and that is called a ritard. Sometimes you can give the illusion of slowing down without actually slowing down. You play 32nd notes to 16th note triplets to sixteenth notes to eighth note triplets to eighth notes to quarter note triplets to quarter notes. It would be better if I could demonstrate but I hope that helps. 🥁❤️

Hey I tried every cymbal in the Memphis Drum shop cymbal room.. and the best sounding cymbal I found for a funk feel.. was a splash.. idk why people trash the splash so much.. maybe the way i use mine is just different..it actually takes place of miltiple high end byzance cymbals ive bought for the purpose as well as an istanbul crash i bought.it doesn't sound small at all and it is a zildj K.. idk ppl always talk trash but its my favorite segue cymbal and ive shelled out for a bunch of high end crashes that dont switch like the splash.. I also have it setup in a weird way and when its not it doesnt sound as good. I used to leave it on my hats pole cause I didnt have a stand and when it could freely move about it sounded so much better than when secured on a stand like its meant to be.. when I leave it room to actually splash.... it gets a great sound thats honestly what I want and didn't get from so many 3 to 4 hundred dollar crashes.. but i fix a felt and twister on it.. and it sounds small and stupid.

Tips: in order to avoid the paradiddle sticking repetitive pattern, just reverse the accent every other 2 paradiddles (learnt from Crhis Coleman).

Stephen, your drums always sound great. Which Remo heads do you use on them?

We call them "garbage can endings" because everyone is throwing all the sound and energy they have into the crescendo and building it to a climax. This is where you can throw in all the flashy licks you practice but never get to play. Just remember to COUNT thru it and watch your bandmates for signals.
