Love this concept and this dude so much. So often people hear “serve the song” and think it means “play as little as possible,” when the song can be served just as much from your creativity as your restraint. The point is that whatever you’re playing works together with the rest of the music, and that you never lose that sense of groove.
@TonyPerez8162 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Couldn't have said it better! The funny thing is, we know he is extremely influenced by the great Carter Beauford. And although Carter is also one of my heroes and favorite drummers, I think he is an example of overplaying much of the time. I have seriously seen Dave Matthews band probably about 35 times live over the last 25 years. And I'm always confused when he goes on these extremely impressive, but highly distracting chop sessions. I remember once at the end of "Ants marching", he played 32nd note "hertas" for like 24 bars. That literally killed the groove and the mood of the music and no matter how impressive the drumming was, it was awful to listen to. I think Harry strikes the perfect balance of flash and substance.
@houseal5 жыл бұрын
Dude, this is one of my favorite Drumeo episodes. Harry's great. Love the in-the-trenches, meat-and-potatoes, working-class drummer approach-and not apologizing for it. YES!!! I'm so happy to see Harry's love for Carter Beauford integrate itself into so many different genres, and ultimately, success for himself. He also has the distinct ability of balancing outstanding drumming with a sense of charm that never manages to slip into doucheville; for all the zingers that he rattles off, you never walk out the other side thinking, 'nope, that didn't land.' Love it!
@Leotardoification6 жыл бұрын
"The sticking doesn't really matter on this one." My thoughts EXACTLY every time someone is trying to dumb down super advanced chops to beginners level. Like, sticking matters if you are practicing rudiments for the sake of improving your technique but don't expect bands and artist to write it out for you if you need to learn a set. And right and left hand sounds exactly the same.
@norskov6 жыл бұрын
Leotardoification sticking doesn't matter on that fill since you end with 3 triplets on the kick and have plenty of time for beat 4 and ultimately beat 1 of the following bar. Sticking certainly matters to make fills flow and not choke halfway or just before the downbeat.
